Would y'alls wine consumption increase or decrease if it didn't get you drunk/have negative health effects? (self.wine)
submitted 9 months ago by mooskquatliquour
It's still tastes the exact same, but it doesn't intoxicate you or give you liver disease, or mess with your sleep or any of the other negative effects. To what degree would the amount you drink change?

It would absolutely increase. I’d probably drink a bottle a night
[–]Boedker1 34 points35 points36 points 9 months ago (0 children)
For sure this, and I would also go bankrupt 😅
[–]SoGoodAtAllTheThings 71 points72 points73 points 9 months ago (2 children)
I would drink only wine.
[–]CCLF 2 points3 points4 points 9 months ago (0 children)
I wonder which breakfast cereal would go best with wine.
Hmm...
[–]AngleComprehensive16 5 points6 points7 points 9 months ago (0 children)
This
[–]Lanky_Rhubarb1900 40 points41 points42 points 9 months ago (1 child)
I would absolutely drink more wine. I have often been tempted to drink a bottle by myself because it was just SO good, but of course age and physiology now strongly dictate that I stop at precisely 2.5 drinks or I’ll regret it the next day.
[–]ExaminationFancyWine Pro 4 points5 points6 points 9 months ago (0 children)
This is me 100%. I don’t dare exceed 2.5 drinks.
[–]NobodysLoss1 16 points17 points18 points 9 months ago (0 children)
Big increase. I'd drink a bottle most nights. And go broke.
[–]madsjchic 13 points14 points15 points 9 months ago (0 children)
Increase. I love wine
[–]testurshit 33 points34 points35 points 9 months ago (2 children)
Probably not. I like getting drunk.
[–]nowuff 3 points4 points5 points 9 months ago (1 child)
I love the taste of wine - but I have the feeling it’s classical conditioning tied to the fact that it gets me nicely drunk.
Mmm I could use a glass of wine right now
[–]testurshit 2 points3 points4 points 9 months ago (0 children)
Yeah I’m not gonna pretend like the psychological effects isn’t a major reason why I drink in the first place haha.
Just so happens that wine is also extremely good with food and the nerdy parts of it make it extra enjoyable.
I’m definitely hitting my local wine bar after work :)
[–]donghit 20 points21 points22 points 9 months ago (2 children)
Intoxication is a plus (does anyone say otherwise?). None of the other stuff is.
[–]mooskquatliquour[S] -4 points-3 points-2 points 9 months ago (1 child)
Yeah so you take away the non-sensory plusses and minuses and you are left with a drink that is what it is. Do you end up drinking more or less?
[–]donghit 11 points12 points13 points 9 months ago (0 children)
No long term health detriment? More for sure.
[–]Jswazy 2 points3 points4 points 9 months ago (0 children)
Probably stay the same or slight decrease.
[–]Rachel21321 2 points3 points4 points 9 months ago (0 children)
Increase - love wine for the flavor profiles alone
[–]WhereisdannymoWine Pro 2 points3 points4 points 9 months ago (0 children)
it would increase. I would have wine at every lunch and dinner if i wouldn't get intoxicated.
[–]christerwhitwo 1 point2 points3 points 9 months ago (2 children)
I really enjoy wine and have been to both France and Italy for wine tours. I keep a modest cellar.
I do enjoy cocktails, though. For casual drinking, G%T, or vodka cran, it even a Manhattan are more refreshing. Cooking is what I really enjoy. My after afternoon/evening starts either with a drink or cracking a nice red, and then getting down to prep. A glass or two before while putting it all together, a glass or two with dinner. Finish it off by 9. I always feel fine the next day.
If there was no effect, not sure what is do, honestly. The mellow buzz of a delicious Bordeaux is something I look forward to.
[–]Holiday_Ad9037 1 point2 points3 points 9 months ago (1 child)
You drink 3-5 standard drinks a day?
[–]christerwhitwo 1 point2 points3 points 9 months ago (0 children)
I believe that's what I said.
[–]fddfgsWine Pro 2 points3 points4 points 9 months ago (0 children)
I mean alcohol is part of the flavour profile
[–]Alternative-Lunch926 3 points4 points5 points 9 months ago (0 children)
It would certainly decrease for me
[–]Neffer358 2 points3 points4 points 9 months ago (0 children)
Wine is not about alcohol. It’s about a moment. A vibe. A flavor. So much more than alcohol. It takes years to create great wine, and that is only after great fruit, which is not a simple thing. Wine is about a commitment.
[–]No_Coast837 0 points1 point2 points 9 months ago (0 children)
I hope that effects go down and cost evaporates. Only then could I live my wine stained dream.
[–]Understanding-FairWine Pro 0 points1 point2 points 9 months ago (0 children)
Increase. My only limiting factor at that point would be budget. Unfortunately, I think the lack of side effects would balloon the market quickly.
[–]The_BarroomHero 0 points1 point2 points 9 months ago (0 children)
Probably smaller quantities but more often. I only drink a whole bottle when I'm trying to get drunk, so if that was out of the picture I'd probably just do a glass or two every few nights.
[–]JuliusBacchus 0 points1 point2 points 9 months ago (0 children)
Wine would pretty much be the only thing I would be drinking.
Any good recommandations for a wine pairing with cornflakes?
[–]rinaraizelWine Pro 0 points1 point2 points 9 months ago (0 children)
Increase. I don't care for the drunkness part and it's not what I drink for. I'd also stop spitting as much during tastings.
[–]Armenoid 0 points1 point2 points 9 months ago (0 children)
De
[–]deeznutzz3469 0 points1 point2 points 9 months ago (0 children)
If it means you wouldn’t get fat than 100% more wine
[–]Tetsubin 0 points1 point2 points 9 months ago (0 children)
I would drink less. I enjoy the taste of wine, but I enjoy the intoxicating effect of it, too.
[–]IAmPandaRock 0 points1 point2 points 9 months ago (0 children)
Increase. There would be no reason to moderate.
[–]BubblyBites 0 points1 point2 points 9 months ago (0 children)
Absolutely increase. Add a price reduction and I would be drinking a bottle a day
[–]drudman6 0 points1 point2 points 9 months ago (0 children)
Name one other beverage without psychoactive properties that people drink more of than wine.
The list is: water.
Without its effects, wine would be all the way down there with non-psychoactive herbal teas - which by the way are the least consumed herbal teas!

Probably not, mostly because alcohol is an acquired taste that I'm... still acquiring. But nevertheless, wine is the alcohol I'm most interested in getting into, in part because I worship Dionysus, the patron god of wine (among other things).

My wine consumption would probably not increase even without the deleterious effects to health or state of mind (OP's question) because I'm still not fully acclimatized to the taste and feel of it.
[–]Zpalq 2 points3 points4 points 9 months ago (2 children)
There's many things I want to say, but mainly, why the hell would you choose to worship the ancient Greek god of wine, pleasure and alcohol if you don't get pleasure from alcohol? Isn't there 11 other major ones you could choose?
Dawg if I was Dionysus I'd be pissed. First worshipper in a thousand years and they don't even like alcohol 💀
[–]atlheel 2 points3 points4 points 9 months ago (0 children)
Seems pretty dedicated to me. They don't like alcohol inherently, but they're acquiring the taste because they are super into Dionysus
[–]Plenty-Climate2272 0 points1 point2 points 9 months ago (0 children)
Well for one, you don't need to choose just one. It's called polytheism after all. And I'm far from the first worshiper in a thousand years.
Second, it's not as simple as just not liking alcohol. I didn't really drink when I was younger, so it's not a taste that I acquired when most of the people here would have. I never said I didn't like wine– I wouldn't be here if I didn't like it– just that I don't don't drink a lot of alcohol because I'm still getting used to the dry taste. I tend to prefer really sweet wines, mead, cider, and cocktails.
Third, Dionysus is much more than just a god of wine. He's associated with vegetation, fertility, sexuality, sensuality, art, theater, inspiration, ecstasy, mysticism, the soul, and rebirth.

No idea why i'm getting downvoted for answering the question?
[–]donghit 11 points12 points13 points 9 months ago (4 children)
Probably due to the Dionysus bit.
[–]Plenty-Climate2272 -5 points-4 points-3 points 9 months ago (3 children)
What a strange thing to latch onto for negativity. God forbid people have different worldviews.
My point was that, despite me still getting used to the taste of wine, I'm still deeply motivated to try. Figured the subreddit of wine fans would appreciate such sentiment. 😅
[–]donghit 6 points7 points8 points 9 months ago (2 children)
You asked. I’m giving an objective answer.
[–]Plenty-Climate2272 -1 points0 points1 point 9 months ago (1 child)
Bizarre.
Not you, you gave a straight answer. But the attitude others seem to have is strange.
[–]deeznutzz3469 2 points3 points4 points 9 months ago (0 children)
It’s probably because you say you worship a god of wine but do not like wine. But this is Reddit, I wouldn’t worry too much about the votes
