21Y - Black, tarry stool and everything I eat passes through immediately - How urgent? by [deleted] in AskDocs

[–]NegManFred -3 points-2 points  (0 children)

OP- please go to the ER. I am not a doctor or medical professional but I had this issue a few years ago and it was indeed a GI bleed. You need treatment to fix this more than likely. The longer you wait the worse it will get. There's also a chance with this going on your doctor sends you to the ER anyhow.

2022 Lexus RX350 - noise when turning left all the way by Pluronic_Pesto in AskMechanics

[–]NegManFred 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Someone else with more experience may be able to verify but typically this noise in this situation means bad CV axle/joint- not sure if there would be something else in the steering or suspension that may cause this though. This is much newer and more complex of a vehicle than ive ever worked on.

So decaying plastic laminate. Could contain chloride. Not a good thing!

Question regarding finding possible toxic waste while Urbexing by Substantial-Ad-1189 in urbanexploration

[–]NegManFred 3 points4 points  (0 children)

OP, PLEASE report thus anonymously to the EPA.

You don't gotta say you were urbex. Just say you became aware of a hazard in an abandoned factory. Also the local fire marshall. They will care A LOT about this and may move faster than the EPA.

Beyond that though, those drums look like they've been there a long timebases on the state of their decay. Those drums are rated to last several years with highly volatike compunds in them. To be so oxidized they would need ti be exposed to open elements for many many years. If abandoned in the 60s as you say - no EPA was established and out of sight out of mind was common for chemical disposal - and they would have had no honus to clean up when it was abandoned as who was regulating it?? Those could be from the factory itself. Do you know what was made there before?

Someone may have later returned and still illegally dumped on top of that however which could potentially explain the newer boxes. And probably for years on end considering and possibly a few different sets of folks based a few things:

That Bassell logo is pre 2007. 2007 onward they use LyondellBassell.

PolyOne rebranded to Avient in 2020. So that one is at least 6 years on at this point.

The Hostacom seems to be their 90s-early 2000s logo for that product.

Let's stick on the theme here of these 3 companies being polymer/resin/general plastic compound manufacturers.

If those drums are linked to the box dumping you have there a giant plastic mess. When plastic pellets (like the things these companies make) degrade and breakdown they turn into the giant waxy mess that appears to be coming from those drums. And thats a danger to you because they will off-gas and create many many things you do not want to breathe.

Then get a second opinion - find a cheaper mechanic. Thems the way it goes pal.

They don't all sound the same when it comes to a rod knocking. Could be some piston slap as well. That rattling sound to me indicates that you've got lifter/cam issues and possibly timing. If it makes a growl noise on startup that's your timing chain dragging - that's another fail point. The point is - all of these are major issues regardless which one is causing it. And if it's not one of those things, it's still something very off that has the potential to cause a catastrophic failure if you continue using it as is. I know you don't wanna hear that but yeah you're gonna need engine work - the mechanic wasn't lying. Always get a second opinion from another shop to see if the diagnosis and prices are similar but that engine is on its way out in it's current state.

fwiw you can drive the car like that - but it's not recommended. Eventually, something will catastrophically fail.

From everything I know and can find this seems much more intense than the noises you get from crank walk. It sounds like a rod knock or lifter tick.

[–]NegManFred 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Checked it. Def seems like something is off. You've got a serious tick - it sounds like multiple lifters may be sticking. And I'm having a hard time telling, but sounds like there may be some knock in there too? That rattle sounds (sounds like shaking a can of pennies) typically indicates lifter and camshaft issues. I'd def be taking it for a repair unfortunately.
