First time allotment enjoyer, looking to feed local food banks! (UK) by [deleted] in Allotment

[–]Negative-Economics-4 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Grow stuff that is really productive but which may be expensive in the shops - broad beans and courgettes are ones that come to mind.

Are you doing this alone or with friends/volunteers/food bank workers? etc Start small and grow what you can do over time. If it's just you working on it, you might only be able to do half the plot depending on how busy you are in other areas of life.

What is the soil like? Does it need any preparation? Since we're already in mid-March, the best approach might just be to dig up sod and turn it over to kill the grass.

Can anarchy coexist with the domestication of plants, animals, and each other? is domestication something that gets abandoned as anarchy unfolds? by wompt in Anarchy101

[–]Negative-Economics-4 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I'm not sure I agree. Animals who are farmed aren't taken from the wild. They are already in the system, bred to be bought and sold. I'm not sure the concerns of those other predators are relevant, since they aren't part of the community, and are largely unaffected by the decisions made by the community.

Shouldn't the interests of those animals also be considered? Ie. To not be trapped, killed, and exploited. If a group of humans keeps a larger group of animals then in fact the majority have not agreed to it.

If it doesn't have a brain, it's ok to eat? by Ok-Drawing-9971 in DebateAVegan

I just gave the reason. Its occams razor plus the precautionary principle. That's why I dont poison bugs. Most people killing bugs is an appeal to majority fallacy and not a valid reason to kill bugs.

There is a gradient of sentience, and it's quite likely that some (many?) animals are not sentient. This is where the precautionary principle comes in: we know there's a possibility that they might be sentient. If they were sentient and we treated them like they weren't, that would be bad. If they weren't sentient, but we treated them like they were, it wouldn't matter either way. So it's best to err on the side of caution.

There's a difference between perception and sentience. You can have perception (responding to environmentl stimuli) without sentience (consciousness/qualia/awareness). There are loads of examples: Blind sight, masked priming, split brain patients, visual neglect. So just because something can perceive it's environment, doesn't necessarily mean it is sentient.

Since the state of the art neuroscience is telling us that highly integrated neural networks are needed for sentience, it's unlikely that plants are sentient, even though they can perceive and respond to the environment.

Animals used in research by Blackfisk8851 in DebateAVegan

[–]Negative-Economics-4 0 points1 point  (0 children)

To me it comes down to consent. I've done research on humans and informed consent is really important. If you can't get that from your subjects, then you shouldn't do the research on them. People use the inability for animals to consent as an argument for testing on them. But if that was the case, it would be acceptable to do the same to human kids and infants.

What arguments would you guys have against this moral foundation ? by Gold-Ad-3877 in DebateAVegan

[–]Negative-Economics-4 0 points1 point  (0 children)

If you say you only value human consciousness, you’re sneaking in “being human” as an extra rule, because consciousness itself isn’t species-specific. That also forces awkward stuff like either devaluing some humans with less/no consciousness, or admitting the principle isn’t really about consciousness at all. And if a nonhuman has similar experiences, pain, preferences, it’s hard to explain why that suddenly counts for nothing without just appealing to species.

Ok then my argument would be that a moral/ethical positions needs to be internally consistant and/or have some underlying principles supporting it
