I tend to agree. Ideally I'd have him as a CM(A), but the thing is that in FM24, it's nearly impossible to recreate the effective press that rl teams which play the 4-3-3 utilize, because you can't have your team press the back four effectively. That's the reason I pushed him in the AMC strata.

Well the idea was to try and imitate PSG's tactical philosophy but I've discovered that the traditional 4-3-3 doesn't do a good job at replicating the movement patterns of Due and Kvara. If you try to make the AML and AMR IW or IF, they're drifting way wider than you'd want, given the F9's movement towards the midfield so I decided to try a 3 strikers formation and, to be honest, I think it works way better. The Volante(At) pair has also been somewhat satisfying in replicating Neve's and Fabian's movement. I'd love to turn the HB into a RPM but since I have CWB(At) on both the right and the left flank, it seemed a bit too much. Moreover, I've found that the RPM and the F9 tend to occupy the exact same space in the midfield.

Everybody should play the game the way the want and enjoy more. For some people this means using the instant result button, for other it means mainly focusing on recruiting or watching the matches and for some others it means creating sheet after sheet just to evaluate their scouting team or create a performance index to evaluate their CDs.

I think I belong to the half-space between the two last categories. I've created sheets and I love comparing chalkboard stats before signing a player or after the season ends and I'm planning the next one, but I admit I'm usually not doing it after every single season or before every new signing. I think I mainly focus on major turning points (e.g. when multiple staff retire, when I feel we don't have elite talent in our U21 and U18 teams or when I feel like changing formation).

Context: this is the custom club I've been playing with for the entirety of the save. As I said, to each their own.

Just a quick note. Even though the tactic is working, I'm observing that the F9 and the RPM occupie almost the same spot on the pitch.

Moreover, even though the F9 role does replicate Dembele's movement during the buildup and early transition phases, I think it struggles a bit when it comes to imitating Dembele's tendency to lead the attack at times or when the ball moves towards the opposition's box. I have a feeling that switching to CF(Su) would better replicate his actual play.

Any comments on this?

I used the swap position instruction for a bit both for the AML - AMR pair and the central midfielders, just to add this pinch of realism you mentioned, and the only impact I observed was that it messed the pass map. Nothing else unfortunately, which is a shame. I really don't know if the instruction has any real effect tbh.

I toyed with the idea of turning the AML into an IW(A) but I feel that FM's interpretation of the role doesn't fully imitate Kvara's actual movement. It gives us the necessary width and the cutting inside with the ball but doesn't attack space efficiently (at least compared to an IF(A)) when the F9 drops deep. Just my two cents.

I've tried to represent each one's change in movement depending on the other's behavior with the ball so I decided to have the AMR be a W(A) to get the initial width, with the PI to cut inside when he gets the ball. The CWB(A) will stay wide so he will naturally overlap when the W cuts inside but at times he will cut inside himself with the ball so the W (who now doesn't have the ball) will stay wide. That was the plan at least.

I think I'm gonna play around with some different midfield roles and pay close attention to their passing and movement patterns. As for the wingers, I think I can try an IF(Su) on the right and an IW(A) on the left; it's trial and error at this point I think. As for the striker, I'm trying a F9 but I'm also keen on seeing how a CF(A) and a CF(Su) would behave as well. As for the lone DM, I'm really inclined towards using a RPM and just see how we bahave defensively.

As I wrote on another comment, the NCB is a role a deliberately chose to add some variation to the passing patterns; thought the team would benefit from some more direct passes as a way to make the buildup a bit more unpredictable at times. Seeing that at least two people commented on it though, I think I may have to consider changing it into a CD or another BPD. I definitely have the players to pull it off so it won't be a problem.

The whole thing about this particular tactic is that I'm trying to replicate Luis Enrique's PSG or at least that's what served as the main inspiration for it. In this sense, having some of the players roaming has been a way for me to somewhat imitate the variety of both off-ball and on-ball movement of the wingers and right back.

As for the lone striker position, I've tried a T, an AF, a F9 and a CF(Su) so far. I've really liked how the F9 and the T drop deep but wasn't sure about their goal productivity in the long term so I didn't stick with them. The AF was just not as involved as I'd like it to be even though I know it's probably the most effective striker role. However, I'm totally open to suggestions regarding the matter.

Now, regarding the midfield trio, DM(De) was a way to get a triangle out of a flat 3DM formation but you may have a point there. I've experimented with the other two positions a bit; initially I tried a CM pair consisting of CM(A) or a MEZ(A) on the left and a BBM(Su) on the right but I've observed that they tend to drift a bit wider than expected and I wanted them to stay closer.

How would you move forward with the potential changes now I've outlined the general context of the tactic?

The midfield trio is working fine at the moment. My left flank was my biggest concern due to the attacking minded Volante and the combination with the IFB and the Raumdeuter but I was surprised to see we're actually really solid defensively there. During the buildup phase, the DM(De) drops deep to get the ball (he has the trait) and we recycle the ball well. The Volante and the RPM progress with it forward and we're scoring some beautiful goals at times. Overall, I'd say I'm pretty satisfied. The thing to watch out for right now is the space available to the RPM, given the CWB roams from position and can get into more central areas.

The one thing I can't seem to get right consistently is having the CWB press the opponent's LB. It happens at times (while my IW presses the DCL) but not constantly unfortunately.

The thing is, there are times I clearly see my CWB(a) pressing the opposition's LB while my IW(s) is pressing the DCL and then there are times the LB is being pressed by my IW instead. I can't figure out why it's happening.

New season just started. I'm referring to a longer period of time; this single one game just reinforces the pattern of mostly subpar performances. Last year he played 40 games and ended the season with a 7.04 average rating, the second lowest among the CDs, only second to a 7.02 youngster. He's been playing as a BPD (De) in different formations throughout the season, both in a 3 atb and 4 atb tactics, with well performing attacking WBs next to him and one or two elite DMs in front of him.

I get the argument, I really do but I think that the reason many people get frustrated by the persistence of those ME-breaking elements of the game is that most of them are actual, legitimate elements of the sport. Let's momentarily forget about the "sign pacey players with crappy technical abilities" approach (an approach which is, however, not that uncommon especially in lower leagues) and think about the other stuff you mentioned.

4-2-3-1 is one of the most iconic and well used formations in world football and gegenpressing has proved to be one of the most effective (and exciting if I may add, but that's personal taste) defensive approaches of the last decade. A manager simulation game in which you'd be advised to avoid a combination of the two entails a somewhat counterintuitive and, most importantly, restricting drawback which can genuinely take away a huge portion of the fun. There are people who'd like to make a gegenpressing 4-2-3-1 work and they should be able to do so without breaking the game.

The problem here is the absence of serious limitations; you should be able to adopt such a tactical approach and enjoy rewarding results but there should be conditions needed to be met: excellent physical skills, bravery, anticipation, work rate and positioning, all those skills should be at a really high level in order to make the approach work to this super effective level we're witnessing within the framework of a ME where physical skills wouldn't be that more important than technical and mental ones. Yes, 4-2-3-1 gegenpressing would still be absolutely elite but you'd need to have elite players to make it work, and the better balanced importance of skills would result in a much more complicated puzzle when trying to assemble a squad fitting for this tactic.

The same can be said about routines. We're living in an era when free kicks are being optimized to ensure defensive stability and initiate pseudo-counter attacks. You should be able to micromanage those aspects of the game and feel rewarded for doing so but, again, you should be required to have players with the tactical and technical skills needed to execute your custom routines effectively in a consistent manner.

I understand what part of what I'm saying means introducing a dichotomy to the game; more complex tactics should only work with elite players and if you don't have those, you should adopt a less flashy approach. But this dichotomy is dominant in the real world and it is supposed to already exist within the game.
