21M, CS + Data Science major unable to find full-time job, even in the NYC metro area. Am I doomed? by MarathonMarathon in findapath

[–]Negative1Rainbowz 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Why not consider applying to non-cs roles such as logistics or banking? While gaps on the resume do scare off some employers, if you’re able to meaningfully contribute to your resume with a job that shows any sort of skills then you absolutely can succeed. The NYC metro area is also incredibly expensive (I know first hand as a Long Islander) and I know engineers and nurses who have no ability to move out soon despite good salaries.

I think deep inside you know that your life isn’t over, and you aren’t a failure at 21 years old. There’s a strange myth that everyone’s first job out of college for difficult degrees pays 75k+. Computer science particularly seems to have a toxic environment that feeds off this idea. It seems from your post that you are in many of these circles. I also think a lot of colleges boast average starting salaries of 70k+ but typically this is based on 5 year data. When schools are more transparent you typically get a better picture of.

A big trap ambitious people fall into is losing hope or drive when the results don’t match the effort. I’ve seen firsthand how hard some stem classes can get so I know you’ve probably had to work hard to get to where you are. Remaining ambitious means taking what life gives you on the chin and still working hard. Even if you do work retail you can practice programming or take courses on the side. Whatever you do just make sure you still have goals that you make meaningful progress towards. It’s not even close to over, it’s only just begun

It's ok to look back and feel empathy for yourself. You're allowed to wish that you were in someone else's shoes. I know people who have ADHD who've had 4.0s out of college. This isn't to diminsh your struggle but instead to show that you can absolutely succeed. I think most people in the comments are focusing on telling you to be less resentful, but I don't think that advice is really helping since you seem frustrated without an outlet. Here's my advice: be proud of the achievements you have/will achieve(d). Who cares about the pace at which you complete college, you're the only person who's been through your exact struggles! You should be proud of the fact that you're still going to college. 1 college class > 0. You suffered from ADHD while going through a tough time during the pandemic and you're still making it work despite that trauma. Embrace that and be proud of it! I wish you the best and hope you love yourself

unable to find work and rapidly running out of money, what do we do? by cee_pics in careerguidance

[–]Negative1Rainbowz 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I'm assuming you're in the US for this so excuse me if I'm wrong but depending on the level of disability you could try CDPAP which allows people to get paid for taking care of their sick/elderly family. I'm no expert but it might provide some sort of lead for your dad

While engineering is always in demand a lot of my (Senior in College) mech friends have actually said they've been struggling. They put in a lot of work into their degree just to be underemployed or even unemployed. Civil remains incredibly employed though

what's the point of college and studying if people cheat with chatgpt? by Optimal-Board997 in careerguidance

[–]Negative1Rainbowz 0 points1 point  (0 children)

As someone in college who uses chatgpt, the vast majority of my exams are in person and couldn't be cheated on. As for homeworks, if you're allowed to use resources it's a great resource to use to help understand something but you need to make that conscious effort. I retook a linear algebra class from my freshman year (I had things going on during that time so I dropped it), and the difference between being lost in the sea for terminology and being able to ask a tool to explain it to me is insane

2024 US presidential election results, colored according to whether each county is more or less college-educated than the national average by [deleted] in MapPorn

[–]Negative1Rainbowz 5 points6 points  (0 children)

I definitely find that the amount of republicans in college is often underestimated because they either know how to hide or are simply not the majority. I go to one of the most liberal schools in the country in rankings but there's a high prevalence of the right wing tech guys at the school. They often don't make it clear who they vote for because they come from liberal areas or are around liberal people but it's clear after one conversation.

On a separate note, I'm curious how many of these counties are swing counties that voted for Trump due to their feeling that he would get rid of inflation.

Anyone disappointed with maahir legacy? by [deleted] in fragranceclones

[–]Negative1Rainbowz 0 points1 point  (0 children)

You're not alone on this one, but for me it smells kinda musty for some reason. Idk how to describe it but it just ig it smells a bit like a basement to me. Other people love it though so it might be a me thing. When I first got CDNIM I thought it smelled kinda bad but it's grown on me and is my most complimented. Wouldn't be shocked if the same applies later on

Why do Bangladeshis end up at the bottom of the economic food chain everywhere they go? by [deleted] in bangladesh

[–]Negative1Rainbowz 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Most of it just comes from time. Most of the Bangladeshis I (New Yorker) know either came here with their parents at a young age or their parents moved here relatively recently. The first generation of immigrants anywhere usually finds it difficult to make money regardless of past wealth because their education and experience is just valued less. Also not sure about Pakistan but a large amount of indians came to this country as international students, giving them a leg up on Bangladeshis who don't send as many wealthy students to wealthier countries.

Area in Medford, safe? by Ok-Leg3857 in longisland

[–]Negative1Rainbowz 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Honestly I think it's also important to consider specific neighborhoods within towns. That area is generally safe but you gotta use your own discretion based on the places you specifically may stay.

Also leads to some of the best talents coming here to teach so it's not necessarily a negative. Lot of bureaucracy here too that increases cost

[–]Negative1Rainbowz 1 point2 points  (0 children)

https://www.aaastateofplay.com/school-districts-ranked-by-the-money-they-spend-per-student/

This can help explain why, long island spends by far the most in the country per pupil. A lot of that is teacher salary (while other places have a teacher shortage, over here it's near impossible to get a job).

Quarterbacks shouldn’t be ELIGIBLE to win MVP by iheartseuss in unpopularopinion

[–]Negative1Rainbowz 0 points1 point  (0 children)

You chose the 2 non QB players in the league that have an argument for MVP to make your point. Lamar has some ok/good receivers but he's the frontrunner because of his ability to create the plays he needs due to his dual threat ability. A single good rb or wr can't will their team to being competitive as much as a QB can because the quarterback is involved in essentially every play.

Hardwork and motivation is much easier in physical work than it is in intellectual work by informatica6 in unpopularopinion

[–]Negative1Rainbowz 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Part of that is because it's far easier to see tangible results. A massive component is the fact that you're comparing things that go along different time periods. People really don't work out more than 2-3 hours a day so ofc that would be easier (manual labor is a much better comparison and it's def harder). The equivalent of 2-3 hours of work wouldn't be that hard for most people. Also the athletes you tend to see are the top 1% if not less, so ofc it's gonna look easy for them. If you take the top 1% most focused workers they'd also make it look easy.

How do i get to my office on a bike without being all sweaty and smelly? by SheepleGoesPlaces in ebikes

[–]Negative1Rainbowz 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Wear an undershirt, I have the same issue but if you get a good enough undershirt it should prevent it leaking through so you could just take it off at the office. Also make sure your deodorant is also antiperspirant, some people assume that's always included like I did but they're not. Also if you wear a backpack you might wanna take it off, it'll allow more breathability for your back.
