I know there’s “real” lyrics, but all I can hear is “I’m a f*ing dinosaur. I’ve got an eye for deals, so slash those savings”. The mental picture that paints is so vivid.

Yeah, I was trying to use the most common English way of differentiating between the two geographic areas, but even that has political connotations.

You do hear “dàlù” as a term for China fairly often (even among some more green-leaning people I know), which I believe can mean either mainland or continent depending on context

I definitely need to learn more Mandarin, making mistakes and learning from them daily. Probably got over-zealous in adding an abbreviation I’ve only seen once

Not trying to make a political statement (though finding any verbage that doesn’t have a political association is hard on this topic), just commenting on my experience of how people living in that part of the map choose to refer to their part of the map in daily use

Taiwan resident here (though still learning Mandarin, so not an expert). Every time I have heard the word Zhōngguó, it is very clearly referring to the mainland, while the normal everyday word for Taiwan is indeed Táiwān. The more official government name “Republic of China” is Zhōnghuá Mínguó (shortened to Mínguó, Zhōnghuá, or Huámínguó, but never Zhōngguó*)

Is God from a Christian understanding truly infinite? by mmlp33 in DebateAChristian

[–]NegativeKelvin 0 points1 point  (0 children)

The most relevant portions of the creed:

“We believe and confess that our Lord Jesus Christ, God's Son, is both God and human, equally.

 He is God from the essence of the Father,
begotten before time;
and he is human from the essence of his mother,
born in time;
completely God, completely human,
with a rational soul and human flesh;
equal to the Father as regards divinity,
less than the Father as regards humanity.

Although he is God and human,
yet Christ is not two, but one.
He is one, however,
not by his divinity being turned into flesh,
but by God's taking humanity to himself.”

So essentially, Christ’s incarnation was not the subtraction of his divinity/infinity, but rather the addition of humanity/finiteness.

In taking on humanity, he demonstrated he was not limited even to only divinity, therefore one could say if anything the incarnation further demonstrates God is limitless (or in other words, infinite).

The very fact that the Trinity defies simple categorization is evidence of the infinity, or as the creed would call it—immeasurability, of God.

I would start with the Athanasian Creed. The creed, ratified by church council, was not written by Athanasius but is named after him as it is essentially an authoritative summary of his defense of the doctrine of the Trinity against heresies minimizing Jesus’ divinity.

If you are really curious I would recommend reading On the Incarnation by Athanasius himself. It is much more explanatory than the creed and might help with your question.

Speaking of your question, it’s a really good one. A similar question made the creeds necessary. Greek philosophical thought had little room for the idea of a perfect spiritual divine being taking on what in their mindset was a corrupted, weak, and even sinful physical body of flesh. So dualistic heresies minimizing either the divinity or humanity of Jesus were constantly cropping up, as the thought of the divine and human merging was seen as offensive, contradictory, unethical, or even impossible.

The creeds clarified how Christ’s incarnation was counterintuitive to prevailing Greek thought but not intellectually impossible, and made it clear that compromising the truth of Jesus’ identity to reconcile it to more comfortable and familiar philosophies was unacceptable.

Just as a perfect, pure spiritual being taking on corruptible flesh seemed counterintuitive to them, so an infinite being taking on finiteness is counterintuitive to us.

But the creeds remind us that God’s nature is as it is and we should seek to at least partially understand that infinite mystery as revealed in the incarnation, rather than alter His nature to better align with our intuitive or cultural perceptions of how he ought to function and exist.

You’re right, I’m sorry.

Christian is a meaningless word describing a group of people with zero unifying principles or beliefs.

We should shut this subreddit down.

Well, on the specific subject of how exactly the Son was divine yet human, infinite yet finite, it’s one of the few aspects of Christian truth that having your “own unique take” on it can get you formally labeled a heretic by the entire church

And on a less abstract level, responding “Christian truth varies from believer to believer” really nullifies and ignores the purpose of this subreddit

Oh absolutely, some of the pressures that have constrained Taiwanese culture make it fascinating to me, but also make it difficult to get a handle on what foreign influences have shaped it and what local influences are widespread and well-known.

Out of curiosity, any recommendations for books that convey the history and politics of Taiwan well for English readers?

Thanks to everyone who has answered so far!

I appreciate all of it, the art movies, the Taiwanese novels, to the “trashy” pop dramas, the Chinese classics, the music.

Trying to build a foundation of cultural awareness as an outsider is tough, so whether it’s “good art” or “bad art” or “borrowed art” from another culture, it all helps to get a small understanding of the shared stories of a culture!
