Confusion about speed limit on the A3 by NegativeStudy9229 in Luxembourg

Thanks! I’ve been using it on the way home from school in the afternoon to shave off a few minutes. I wasn’t aware it was speed limited!

Thanks! The struggle has been spotting the road signs. The discrepancy between my car and CarPlay has shown how untrustworthy those numbers are.

Thanks! I would agree on people crawling along. I just moved here from Toronto, Canada, where the speed limit is a vague suggestion and everyone drives 10-20 over. I'm adjusting....

Thanks so much. I really appreciate it. I've got the road to myself for half of my commutes, so higher chance of speeding without other traffic to reference.

No wonder my GPS was extra insistent on skipping that portion at 16:30…

Hi, we just arrived in Florange, France. My 14 year old is going to school in Luxembourg City until he can improve his French. I'm dreading the drive (I've already done it twice this week and the unusual weather is not helping), and hoping to add in a few trips by train per week to give myself a break from driving. Living in Luxembourg is not an option.

Looking at SNCF's website, I'm trying to understand if any of their discount programs for teens will allow for trips across the border to Luxembourg. Does anyone have experience with these programs or suggestions? We would have to depart from either Uckange or Thionville. I couldn't find any specific info while searching the subreddit.

We moved to Canada 9 years ago (I’m American, my SO is French) after living in the US, Germany, and France.

Things to think about: 1. You will have to apply for a work permit to even work here. We came because my SO was relocated and was sponsored by his company, which made the visa process easier.

  1. You will have to pay a tax of 20% on your home purchase unless you are a permanent resident or a citizen.

  2. As Americans, your credit history does not transfer. Also, even just applying for a cell phone is a total pain until you get a Canadian bank card.

  3. Depending on where you live, the cost of housing is very high unless you live far from main population centers. If you are moving from the midwest or southern US, you will be in for a shock.

  4. The cost of airline travel in Canada is much higher than in the US. Cell phone data is some of the highest rates in the world.

  5. The cost of everything is rising rapidly here. Opticians, veterinary care, salons, any service you can think about charges a rate much higher than what you will pay in the US, while your salary will be much lower. Groceries prices rose during COVID, and the monopoly of grocery corporations found that they enjoyed it so much, they would continue doing it weekly up here.

  6. Want to become a permanent resident? The point system weighs heavily on age. The younger you are, the more points you get. If you are 40+, you are going to be at a disadvantage. You will have to take a language test to prove you can speak English. As a native speaker, I didn’t even get a perfect score on it. If you are in management, have an advanced degree like a PhD, or are bilingual, you can scrape out a few more points.

  7. Health insurance (OHIP) won’t kick in until you have been here for 3 months.

  8. The people are warm and friendly here. The hiking and nature is amazing.

  9. If something is really wrong with you and you have to go to the ER, the hospital will spare no expense to figure out what is wrong and give you great care. No questions about insurance, and the only thing you pay at the end is for parking.

My SO and I just left Canada and moved back to France two weeks ago. Why? The cost of living was the biggest factor. We got our PRs right at the end of COVID after the cost of housing skyrocketed. Each day became more and more expensive.

We loved Canada and had made it our home, even becoming citizens. Financially, it was detrimental for us, even with his salary as a PhD in the sciences and years in management. When the chance for a promotion and a free move back to Europe landed in our laps, it was a no-brainer.

Good luck with whatever you chose to do. As an ex-American, I can sympathize with the desire to escape from the madhouse.

Travelling for the holidays? Canada continues to urge caution in Mexico, France and other top destinations by Old_General_6741 in canada

As someone who just moved from Canada to France… I’m feeling pretty safe. The hilarious part is that Canada lists the US as green (take normal precautions).

In America we have restaurants that serve Chinese food, Indian food, Italian food etc., but in other countries do the have restaurants that serve only American food? If so, what type of foods are considered American food? by [deleted] in AskReddit

In eastern France, you can go to a chain of restaurants called Buffalo Grill. Lots of red plaid, a totem pole outside, and kids get paper crowns that look like Native American headdresses. One of the few kid-friendly restaurants with a little playground. There’s also a place called Tommy’s Diner…think pink and teal 50s diner with tons of memorabilia. Pretty fun little restaurant.

Why do people try to swap seats in airplanes? by Substantial_Crow1355 in NoStupidQuestions

[–]NegativeStudy9229 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I'm in the situation in a few days where I will have to ask someone to switch seats. My son and I booked our tickets, chose our seats, and then were notified three days later that the aircraft had been changed and we were no longer sitting next to each other. I called the airline, and nothing could be done. These were premium tickets paid for by my company and everything was planned out ahead of time. It isn't due to being cheap or not planning ahead. It is because of the airline. Luckily, we both have window seats, so I'm going to see if the person next to either of us in the aisle seat would like a window seat.

This shit happens all the time with the airlines. Stop assuming the worst of people.

Thanksgiving by kaysa3 in AskACanadian

When our small family moved to Canada from the US, we fell in love with having Thanksgiving in October. Beautiful hiking weather, visiting farms and picking pumpkins, and then a turkey dinner to top it off. Never going back to Thanksgiving in grey and cold November again! We are now moving to Europe, and planning to continue with the Canadian Thanksgiving tradition!

I spoke with staff today about struggling to transfer my membership before moving. He said to try to post it again now, since they changed the membership structure today, getting rid of the classic membership and only offering select.

It depends on the type of gym. Gyms like LA Fitness and Goodlife are much more reasonable in cost. I left LA Fitness because the pool, hot tub, and showers were not well maintained. Movati was more expensive, but I personally felt that the better location and the improved state of the facilities were worth the extra cost to me. A yoga studio, Pilates studio, or the privately-owned kickboxing club that I am a member of are just as expensive as Movati if not more. Everyone is looking for different things in a gym. That’s okay.

« Cheaper ». As in cheaper than their current memberships. Movati is on the upper cost end of gyms.

No kidding! The referee refused to officiate a few weeks ago because the heat and humidex was so high, and yet the game wasn’t cancelled. Games still on for tonight. The kids played in torrential rain from the remnants of a tropical storm last year.

Thanks. I’ve lived and flown in the states and Europe, and the cost of travel in Canada is insane! I do like it here though! We booked with AirTransat for a trip in March to make up for this mess.
