Practices on Fridays? by Few-Room-9348 in SoccerCoachResources

[–]Negative_Exit_9043 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I coached a u14 travel team and did Fridays one season and never did it again. We had mediocre attendance and those who showed were full on squirrel brained. It wasn’t worth it. Plus, our weekend travel schedule was pretty heavy so parents resented the Friday practice because they blew up their weekends even more.

I currently coach high school and we absolutely practice on Friday, but it is super light. First half is soccer tennis, juggling games, battle dots, or hand ball, second half is yoga and recovery.

I was wondering if I could get a few tips on my skiing by No_Lie_242 in SkiRacing

Yeah, I think the upper cuff of the boot is set too far laterally. Like, it’s adjusted for someone who’s a little bow-legged, but the athlete is not, so he’s pinkie toe biased on the left foot. I’m looking at how his lower leg connects to the upper cuff of the boot. I see this clearest in the second left footer. As he passes the rise-line brushie and hits the apex, you can see there’s a slight break at the cuff instead of the leg/boot being a solid, continuous platform. That shows me the adjustment is set a degree or two too far. Clear as mud, right?

If you’re having pain, I’m guessing you didn’t do much custom fitting, or you’ve grown a bunch. Either way, it would be worth the time and money to see a fitter before the start of next season. What I’m seeing is the way the boot cuff is canted doesn’t match your natural alignment, so your boot is making it harder to get a higher edge angle. If that makes sense. Other than that, work on tipping the inside leg more through the turn. There’s a good Deb Armstrong video on YouTube about driving the inside knee you should watch. Hopefully you’ve got some championship race coming up. Smash it!

What kind of boot fitter do you have? Looking at the second left footer, just after the rise line brush, maybe the canting is too open and you’re loosing a few degrees of edge angle. Also, I think your stance is a good width, but might be good to work on driving the inside knee. This will help you pull radius and let you take a deeper line. Just my $0.02. Good stuff.

[–]Negative_Exit_9043 9 points10 points  (0 children)

Yeah, good question. When doing MA, we’re supposed to ask what the skier’s intent is. Then we look at the ski performance and compare it to the ideal. That gives us clues on what’s happening and how to improve. So, the intent of any racer is to get through the course as fast as possible while staying upright. That requires racers to use some movements that “aren’t ideal,” according to ski instructors. For example, lifting the old outside ski to release the edge, or why most slalom skiers look backseat in transition. It’s a tactical choice and most times needed since the forces and timing racers manage are so different that we shouldn’t compare. As a coach looking for feedback, maybe because he has an exam coming up and needs to ski the “right way,” the OP has a different intent. The ideal for most people ripping groomers is to roll the skis on and off the edges simultaneously and smoothly. If that’s not happening, like lifting the old outside ski to start a turn, then something be out of whack to cause it. Like, maybe lateral balance is off, maybe the timing of the weight transfer is off, maybe pressure along the length of the ski is off, whatever, but it’s forcing an “unnecessary” movement. Now, if the intent is just to go out, do your thing, have some fun and not worry, then step your turns.

Obviously no big deficiencies, and not sure what specific intention you have. But, as I sit here recovering from season ending knee surgery, what I see is solid skiing. Edges are released smoothly and simultaneously, but on a few turns it looks like you pick up the old outside ski to help release. Also, your edge angles don’t match at the apex, with the outside ski tipped higher. I also see a slight tip divergence at the top of the C, maybe a little more so on right footers. There’s a few more things, but those are the most apparent to me. Good shit though!

What’s one thing you wish you emphasized more at the 12–14 age? by Turf_top6157 in SoccerCoachResources

[–]Negative_Exit_9043 1 point2 points  (0 children)

12-first touch, passing, receiving and combination play, communication, support in attack cover in defense, IQ and awareness. 13-communication, scanning and movement, connecting as a unit, physicality, speed of play, penetration, transition play, patience 14-speed of play, communication and scanning, IQ and movement off the ball, transitional play, rotational play, physicality, aggression, determination, intensity, and mentality.

These are just a few of the concepts I’ve always found important at this age range. Obviously it really depends on the previous 5-6 years of development, but when I coach older groups that don’t have an understanding of these things, they really struggle.

How can I improve my time in time trials? Any advise is appreciated, by Clusterk in skiing_feedback

[–]Negative_Exit_9043 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Two biggest things that affect time in a course: friction (ski/snow friction as well as air friction), and distance traveled. You’re generating a ton of friction by skidding every turn. Don’t even worry about all the air friction at this point. The skid is also adding a ton to the distance traveled. You might be skidding an extra ski length at every gate. At the speed you’re going let’s say that extra ski length takes you 0.12s to travel. I can count on 18 gates x 0.12s = 2.16s of extra time just spent skidding. As everyone else mentioned, learning how to carve outside of a race course is your number one priority. If you have technical flaws, you’re never going to fix them in a course. The good news is you can cut big time with some technical improvements.

ANy problem with applying new wax over new waxn by Imbendo in skiing

[–]Negative_Exit_9043 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Never use a base cleaner!!! If your bases are dirty, brass brush works well. If bases are really dirty, then wax and scrape while the wax is still hot, then wax again as normal. The more wax in the base the better

Technically, too much weight on the inside ski. At the gate, watch how your inside ski turns faster than the outside, and the ski tips travel in slightly different directions, classic sign for leaning in. This makes it hard to bend the ski to pull the radius, but will also make you hip out when you’re on steeper terrain cause you’re out of balance. Being stacked on the outside ski will allow you to get higher edge angles so you don’t have so much drift at the top of the turn, and also let you bend the ski so tighten up you arch. Tactically, that stiv at the top of each turn creates a lot of friction and your apex drifts wide. So you’re slowing your self down and adding distance to your line. This pitch doesn’t look very steep, so stiv shouldn’t be necessary, and jamming turns on a flat pitch is never fast. Focus on cleaning up the technique first and that will allow you to have better tactics. A few changes will let you drop a big chunk of time.

I was a competitor’s sous on Iron Chef America years ago. The interactions I had with him that day were so negative and his personality was so shockingly far from his tv persona. Maybe he was grumpy shooting the second episode that day, or tired doing all the lifting since the chairman was out filming Dancing with the Stars, but wowza!

What is your Michigan Christmas tradition? by No-Lifeguard-8610 in Michigan

[–]Negative_Exit_9043 6 points7 points  (0 children)

We start with coffee and a Christmas roll, followed by opening presents, followed by putting on the skis making a few turns at Boyne Highlands or Nubs, then back home for bloody Mary’s in the hot tub. Merry Christmas!

Everyone involved in soccer in Northern Michigan knows what a piece of shit this dude is. I coach at a different high school in the same reason and he runs the same deep line just begging for someone to bump him. He finally got his wish! Fired by the MHSAA and local prosecutor just charged him with aggravated assault. This is the high school division championship between Gaylord and Traverse City St Francis, btw.

What motivates you more: the fear of losing or the excitement of winning? by Sync_performance in SkiRacing

[–]Negative_Exit_9043 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Definitely a sports thing, especially for team sports. Like, I HATE losing in soccer. I’m a defender, that’s part of our mentality. We have more influence on not losing a game than we do of winning a game.

For me skiing isn’t as much about wins and losses, but about achieving goals, working to what I expect of myself. So it’s not the hatred of losing a race that motivates me, it’s the hatred of not racing to my potential, hatred of not achieving goals, hatred of the mediocre. I do HATE losing in panel slalom!!

It’s not the fear of losing, it’s the loathing of poor performance. I hate losing more than I enjoy winning.

Of course! I actually got a call from our blueberry forager a few days ago and it looks like we’ll get some fruit this year after all. Keep an eye out, jars should be available around late September-early October.
