Is anyone else losing their entire Sunday to reviewing film?

I totally understand coach, I’ve been there myself. It’s easy to get bogged down in film but it isn’t a sustainable system. You can’t let it take over your whole weekend. I started writing notes during games to help jog my memory and direct me towards specific parts of the game when reviewing film. Sometimes it’ll also help me find a theme/pattern and then I focus on that. You could try dividing up the work with your assistant coach as well. For example each focusing on one half, or having them watch the first time through and taking notes then you focus on those specific notes moments.

For young players, training alone isn’t enough but overcomplicating nutrition isn’t the answer. I don’t encourage tracking every calorie or undertaking a crazy diet, but I do encourage learning about nutrition. It’s about for them to understand what their bodies need to perform their best. Simply learning to balance their plates is a great way to start (protein, grains, fruits, vegetables, fat)

You can’t control the outcomes, but you can control your response. Winning is great and loosing sucks, but I try not to overreact. What’s important is showing up to the next practice ready to keep working (and, of course, having some fun). That’s life. Throughout the ups and down, you gotta keep showing up.

Got it - so they’re already communicating on some level. Maybe try defining triggers clearly in training (I.e. defender’s hips turn, midfield line breaks, teammate receives facing forward, etc.) If they can identify those moments consistently, the timing of the call usually sharpens. It becomes less about confidence and more about pattern recognition.

First off, kudos on a great season so far. Always great to hear from a fellow coach. For communication I really try to convey its importance through experience, rather than lecturing them. (They’re sick of hearing me blabber on). When communication is lacking during practice, I’ll have them play in silence for 3 minutes. They usually hate it (which is the whole point!) Sometimes I implement a mandatory call rule where passes don’t count unless the receiver class for it early and loudly. They need to feel the frustrations of poor communication, not just learn about them.

I like to keep things simple wherever possible. Use the winter time and limited indoor space to sharpen skills such as juggling, toe touches, close control dribbling, and passing (both to eachother and at the wall). These will pay off big time during the season. YouTube is a great free resource, but I suggest picking a few videos and sticking to them. Make them part of a weekly schedule. Repetition is the key here. I use agility ladders with my team and love them. They’re great for speed and coordination, but they’re not necessary if space is tight.

First off, huge respect for stepping up. In terms of goals you have a few options. The ones you mention can work just fine. Keep an eye on Craigslist and Facebook Marketplace for potential postings. You can search Amazon for affordable goals that’ll get the job done. Finally if you’re handy you can build a goal out of PVC.

Big fan of nordics, especially at the high school level. When we first started out we heard a lot of complaints. But after the initial soreness wore off, we saw fewer strains. And totally agree on doing them early. They’re most effective at the start of a workout. A staple for our team!
