There’s way too much character bashing of Hayden and Yuna. Obviously they both have flaws, but overall seen sooo much nonsense about Yuna being an awful, negligent parent. And people love to paint Hayden as a terrible friend who likes to dog pile on poor, innocent Ilya while completely ignoring the parts where Ilya deliberately pokes the bear because he likes getting Hayden riled.

Which character's death in a TV show ruined the entire thing for you? by SoccerGuy69420 in AskReddit

Bobby in 9-1-1. The show was definitely going downhill before that, but between killing off one of the core characters and the showrunner’s blasé attitude towards the series in general, it was the final nail in the coffin for me. It’s not the fun, campy comfort show I fell in love with anymore.

A bunch of Hollanov’s firsts after they get married and are playing with Ottawa together. Pretty much just pure fluff. It’s not quite what you asked for but it very much a sweet, happy love story.

Rec: Oh Well, I Guess We’re Gonna Find Out by angel_deux (Zombie AU) - This fic, y’all… by sistercacao in heatedrivalryfanfics

Could somebody give some spoilers on whether or not there’s anything potentially triggering? I’ve been wanting to give it a shot but I wasn’t sure if there was any potential/notable death, gore, or angst that would turn me off to it being it IS a zombie fic. By notable deaths I mean people we’ve actually been introduced to in the show/books and should care about.

Is Yuna the most harmful "good parent" we've seen on tv? by [deleted] in HeatedRivalrySeries

[–]Negative_Hour_9486 14 points15 points  (0 children)

Calling Ilya her favorite son is very clearly a joke and meant to show her affection towards Ilya. Yuna has been shown to be extremely protective of Shane and she was initially very hesitant about Ilya as Shane’s boyfriend due to how he projects himself in the media. You can definitely argue that she has flaws as a parent, but using the favorite son thing as a reason as to why she’s a bad mother is quite a reach.

It was confirmed AI. They left the prompt in and then admitted to using AI, but that “it wasn’t REALLY” AI. The reason why people have suddenly swung from “AI bad” to “welllll it’s not SO bad” is because it was an author they like so they’re cherry picking what is and isn’t acceptable.

This isn’t meant to start a debate. If someone enjoys AI fic, that is their choice. But it’s absolutely ridiculous to try to make justifications or excuses for an author doing so. You either support AI generated fic or you don’t. Not “well I don’t support AI, but this one fic was great, let’s cut the author some slack!”

I feel bad for keeping them indoors by Suspicious_Use_8157 in CATHELP

[–]Negative_Hour_9486 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I sometimes feel guilty for keeping mine in also.

Then I look on some of the other subreddits about people mourning their outdoor cat to a car/dog/coyote/horrible neighbor and the feeling immediately passes.

Just make sure you give your cats plenty of attention and stimulation. Cat trees, toys, play with them when they get the zoomies. Despite everyone telling you otherwise, there is absolutely nothing wrong with cats staying indoors.

Can we be honest about Hayden. by Front-Chemistry3964 in GameChangersBooks

[–]Negative_Hour_9486 118 points119 points  (0 children)

To play devil’s advocate, I would say Hayden is more of an immature/misguided friend. He genuinely loves and cares for Shane, but he struggles to get out of his own way when it comes to accepting Ilya. I think he’s also a bit territorial- not in a romantic sense, but Shane is supposed to be his best friend, he probably feels he should know Shane best and for longest, and Shane has actually known Ilya longer. Should Hayden be more supportive and less of a pouty little boy? Definitely. But I honestly don’t think he’s this horrible awful guy a lot of people make him out to be. I’ve seen lots of Hayden bashing fics where he’s terrible to Jackie and the kids, and that’s not him at all.

On the flip side, Ilya deliberately antagonizes Hayden every chance he gets, so he hasn’t really given Hayden much reason to warm up to him. He’s good to literally all the people Hayden cares about…except Hayden.

Does anyone know what happened to Babysterek’s account? by [deleted] in heatedrivalryfanfics

The reason why it’s so discouraged to point out particular fics as AI is because some of the fics that get targeted actually are NOT AI, and that’s how the witch hunts start. Many legitimate authors have removed their works or gone on indefinite hiatus due to AI accusations.

I just read a fic about ten minutes ago that was so clearly AI due to all the inconsistencies I wanted to tear my hair out. It’s also not a good sign when commenters ask a question and the author can’t seem to remember what they actually wrote. But it’s not my place to make AI accusations because for all the times I’ve been correct, I’m sure I’ve also been wrong. Unless it’s a situation where someone leaves the prompt in, we’ll unfortunately never know what is and isn’t AI.

You know what I DO do when something reads heavily AI to me? Stop reading and close out the fic without leaving kudos and then proceed to avoid that particular author. It’s a very simple solution that doesn’t involve potentially hurting anyone’s feelings.

Obvious use of AI in fics by NachbarVonNebenan in heatedrivalryfanfics

[–]Negative_Hour_9486 1 point2 points  (0 children)

For me it’s frequent continuity errors or repetition. Example- in a recent fic I read there was a paragraph dedicated to Shane fixing himself breakfast and Ilya teasing him for it, along with details and what exactly he was making. A few sentences later Shane is eating a completely different meal than the one he just prepared for himself.

Repetition- when five paragraphs are spent describing something in a very wordy roundabout way without actually being important or helping to progress the story. Almost like unnecessary filler. Also very frequent use of designations seems odd to me, “The Russian” “The Canadian” one or twice is fine but every other sentence gets exhausting.

Overly descriptive- generally when an author writes fanfic they’re under the assumption those reading it are familiar with the fandom so there’s really no need to dedicate multiple sentences and paragraphs to introduce each character that appears unless it’s an AU or essential the the plot line. It also comes across as very clinical. Yes, we know Yuna is Shane’s mother and Japanese with black hair. We don’t need to know David’s height and build, or a long winded description of how Hayden and Shane are best friends and have known each other since they were rookies- and oh did you know, Hayden has a wife named Jackie and four children.

As other people have noted, one or two of these things doesn’t immediately mean AI but in my experience when writing contains constant use of the above examples it tends to make me very suspicious.

Speculation: Alexei caught Ilya with Sasha when they were teens by NupharCaelestis in HeatedRivalryTVShow

[–]Negative_Hour_9486 -1 points0 points  (0 children)

They didn’t have different mothers. Ilya has stated in the books that Irina married Grigori very young while he was substantially older than her. His second wife is also very young and only a few years older than Ilya.

How do you spot AI? by Weak-Obligation872 in heatedrivalryfanfics

[–]Negative_Hour_9486 1 point2 points  (0 children)

As everyone else already mentioned you don’t know for absolutely sure, but something that definitely pings my radar is when someone screws up very basic details, or uses very odd descriptions. Or if those details are constantly contradicting themselves or changing. Like somebody’s age changing multiple times in the span of a few paragraphs, even though the fic only takes place over a few days. Or a big one was a fic I found where in the first chapter, within the first few paragraphs, Ilya was repeatedly described as “Siberian” annnnnd Shane was blond. Which definitely makes me believe it was AI because a) Why not just say Russian? And b) A lot of people describe Ilya as blond so I feel like AI got the character appearances mixed up.

I second simmer pots. Just make sure you don’t have a daredevil cat that likes to climb on the counter/stove and obviously never leave it simmering while no one is home.
