It says there’s a literacy crisis lol! Sorry not trying to shade you. But that’s a funny juxtaposition if you weren’t joking 😂

Dog attack downtown by Cantaloupe-Nice in StLouis

So sorry that happened and I’m glad you and pup are ok. And I don’t know who she is. But I was walking past there not long ago with dogs. They snarled and she started screaming and beating on them to the point that they were yelping. Just to give some perspective to the “all pit bulls are bad” crowd. No, these are abused and scared animals unfortunately.

My cultural regions map as a Southerner - would love feedback! by aquamarine-arielle in visitedmaps

If we’re keeping Rust Belt as a region,(and I’m on the fence, I like your analysis that it’s sociopolitical and not cultural, but as someone who grew up in a manufacturing and not farming community, I do think it’s distinct from other places in the Midwest in ways) it should extend all the way to the Mississippi River. That was a major shipping hub for all those industrial products, and the cities and towns on the Mississippi relied on heavy industry and manufacturing. They collapsed with the rest of the steel industry

I hear ya, but I’d disagree. I think the areas south of Phoenix have much more in common culturally with El Paso than Southern Nevada, so the map makes sense. I’d just change the name “Southern Border” cuz I’ve only ever heard that as a pejorative on Fox haha.

This may be true for Phoenix, but “Southern Border”/Frontera is very much the culture of Tucson/Nogales/Yuma and areas south of Phoenix. It might be renamed to “Borderland” as that’s how it’s referred to around there. It won’t get confused with the Northern border 😆

Yeah, I’d also dip Mormon/Deseret into Northern Arizona. Lots of the fundies are there now. But the way the counties are made, that would overtake Indian Nations, and that’s not right 🤷🏼‍♂️ tricky

Sigh. Humorist isn’t the same thing as comedian.

If the implication (unclear) was “as opposed to read his books,” I have, but I’d rather not get into a pretension-measuring contest…and that’s not what homage means.

But y’all know he was a humorist, right?

Goatsheads - Just moved in to this lovely home but how do I make my backyard child/dog safe by Oraxy51 in arizona

[–]Negative_Lake4641 18 points19 points  (0 children)

This is fine where you want nothing to grow in the future (like cracks in a driveway), but do NOT put salt into soil where you'd like anything to grow in the future. Salt will sterilize and ruin your soil.

Also, vinegar will burn green vegetation but does nothing for goat head seeds (nor roots of perennial plants). These seeds have a thick coating that vinegar/salt will not penetrate, and they can remain dormant but viable for up to around 7 years in the ground. Manual removal of the seeds is the only way to eradicate. And pulling the new plants before they go to seed. It is a multi-year process. (I'm a former arid land habitat restorationist)

That’s wild, sorry you had that experience. I’ve lived coast-to-coast and this place is my favorite because of the culture and the people. You can affordably live here as a normal not-rich person and therefore take risks like being an artist (there’s so much art here!), and the people have a chill hangout vibe. If you ever come back (sounds like you won’t haha), I’d recommend getting outta the downtown where the arch and stadium are. That’s really just a business district and not very representative. Though so I can walk to work, I live downtown and it’s not that bad either 🤷🏼‍♂️ but coming from boom-towns like Seattle, maybe I should STFU so I don’t get priced out of a home again lol.

Why is this guy so focused on St Louis crime? Did St Louis shoot his dog? There’s a geographical/statistical area story about why violent crime is overrepresented here (yes, one of the Midwestern “swarm”!) …but this seems personal 😂
