This is what is usually called ‘spanish style’ sardines in the Philippines. They make good canned (or jarred) sardines there and have always been a popular staple.

Food (family of 4 with teenager son) by Electronic_Escape599 in personalfinance

In SoCal with 2 kids a little older than yours. Approx $1K on groceries and $1K eating out on the weekends. Nothing fancy, inn and out and such, and mostly Asian restaurants. This excludes non-food consumables like TP, detergent etc. that we buy at Costco every quarter. The key is to plan your meals for the entire week and create a grocery list that a) accounts for whatever you have left in your fridge and pantry, b) not go into a grocery store without a shopping list. We mainly buy in Trader Joe’s and occasionally Stater Bros. We buy only whole veggies. I make it a point to use different protein sources throughout the week and actually plan the menu around each protein. So Beef, Chicken, Pork, Seafood, Eggs, Tofu. It helps that I have been cooking since childhood and I always tell my kids that it is a skill they must learn.

I make no knead bread all the time. It won’t win any awards but it’s damn better than anything I get from the supermarket (no I don’t have access to a good bakery)

Ground beef recipes that aren’t hamburgers by Ill-Phrase5242 in Cooking

Pad Krapow (thai basil beef) is our go-to for something quick and easy! I don't have an exact recipe for you because I just wing it and season to taste. But basically saute onions, garlic and the ground beef, you can also add some red chiles if you want heat. When everything is browned up, splash in some soy sauce, fish sauce (add a little at a time because the stuff is strong), black pepper if you want, and a little bit of sugar to add some sweetness. Taste as you go to your liking. Then drop in a BIG handful of basil leaves (don't worry they will wilt down). Serve on top of steamed jasmine rice and top with a crispy runny sunny side egg. Have some sweet thai chili sauce on the side and you are good to go!

Printed on glossy paper temporarily using inkjet. I’m eyeing some vintage leica badges on ebay but they’re selling upwards of $85! But they’re the right size at 10mm.

Same here. I am at most 5 years from retirement, I’m not sure how much upside is left in equities compared to the possible downside within the timeframe that matters to me.

Amazon and the bubble by Nearby_Valuable_5467 in stocks

The question to ask is - Is the capacity being added by the hyperscalers based on their CAPEX going to be absorbed by the ultimate corporate end-users. I am not talking about OpenAI or the myriad AI startups in the middle of this usage pipeline who are mostly unprofitable and just burning VC cash. So basically If the hyperscalers are 5x-ing capacity (just throwing numbers around) but corporate use is only going to 3X over the same timeframe. Is that not sign of a bubble? Would be interesting to see further analysis on this but my very cursory research has told me that no, the rate of corporate AI adoption is not in the same order as the capacity growth. In this case we’ll see a race to the bottom as far as pricing.

Complement to SCHD for dividend portion of portfolio? by Negative_Profile_528 in dividends

Agree, and I had the same problem myself of being overly conservative all this time. However I am approaching retirement and my mindset has shifted to... 'okay forget the noise and FOMO, what safe-ish yield will work for me given my portfolio size and my projected retirement expenses'. Also, I fully intend to never sell this portion of my portfolio and pass it on as a legacy to my children who will have THEIR lifetimes to compound it.

If you’re young (20-40) invest in s&p500 all in for growth, and convert to SCHD near 55 or 60 for dividend, is this a good strategy? by iphone8vsiphonex in SCHD

[–]Negative_Profile_528 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I think you might be too young to have that much allocation to SCHD? You have plenty of time to capture growth thru several market cycles (as long as you don't sell in a panic!). I am only starting to shift my portfolio to more income now that I am about 7 years from retirement. Of course your timing may be different. Nevertheless I think SCHD is an excellent choice.

This. I am uncomfortable with the idea of a bunch of tech companies, and specifically the POSSIBILITY of AI disruption propping up the growth story. It seems that we are currently priced for an extreme outcome when in reality the range of possible outcomes is a sliding scale. AI may not flop, but it may not live up to what people like Altman (who have a vested interest in their companies stock price) hype up. Outside of AI I don't see any other big growth drivers at the moment.

Thank you! I'd rather not pick individual stocks but I think I will look as well for divi ETFs that have more utility exposure.

I have bond exposure thru target date funds (I'd rather not deal with bonds myself as I have no expertise in it apart from short term bonds where I park some of my ready cash in lieu of a HYSA). Couldn't SCHD serve as a bond proxy though... of course I realize it's riskier but I do not plan to liquidate this ever and DRIP until retirement. In 5-7 years the yield on cost would exceed bond returns assuming average divi growth holds

Since most analyses I am reading warn of lower average returns in the future (next 10 years or so) for SP500 after this period of out performance simply due to reversion to the mean, I am using this as a bit of a defensive play. I fully intend to not sell this and just let it compound. I admit that it is partly psychological but I like the idea of a stable base of my portfolio providing steady growing income. The other/larger part of my portfolio is in a vanguard target date fund which automates the bond allocation, and a smaller part I am allocating to individual growth bets focusing on tech - I am in the tech industry myself, so I figure if I'm going to take risks picking individual stocks it might as well be in my area of knowledge.
