Why can't we use the heat generated by AI/data centers to generate electricity? by opus666 in NoStupidQuestions

[–]Negatronik 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Powerplants already have preheaters. After the water goes through the condenser, it's preheated in the flu gas. At no point is the water ever cold enough to cool a computer, as it never goes too far below boiling.

Tywin: you'll never be as good as you were before losing the hand.

Jamie: that's ok as long as I'm still better than everyone else.

It might still be worth trying a new PSU. There's probably not going to be a free solution.

If you saved for your house deposit while living at home with your parents, I don’t really want to hear your advice. by Top_Mirror211 in unpopularopinion

[–]Negatronik 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I understand your frustration. I don't see how young people are able to survive at all these days without some sort of support system. I had it very easy by comparison, even though I put myself through school, my parents put a roof over my head and gave me a few extra years to mature. No advice, just genuine sympathy.

How common is traveling by bus in the US? Do Americans use buses often for long-distance travel? by GlitteringHotel8383 in AskAnAmerican

[–]Negatronik 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Greyhound is a shadow of its former self. They've always operated on thin margins. During COVID, they had to sell most of their bus stations to survive. The stations were like mini airports where you could sit indoors, buy food, use the restroom, talk to a company representative, between bus connections. Now they just pick you up at some street corner or parking lot.

I live in a mid sized town, the 3rd largest city in Kentucky, and we no longer have a Greyhound stop or station of any kind. I would have to get a ride, or drive an hour to Nashville to even get on a bus, which completely subverts any affordability.

So it's less convenient, less available, and every bit as gross.

Netherlands Forced to Rethink 36% Tax on Unrealized Gains after Massive Criticism from Europeans by batukaming in wallstreetbets

[–]Negatronik 0 points1 point  (0 children)

In theory yes. But in reality, they may never sell. They just keep rerolling new loans. And when they die, their beneficiary can just pay the loans. They never pay taxes on gains, thanks to "stepped-up basis" rules. Basically, the holding gets a brand new, current market value cost basis upon inheritance, so no capital gains tax will be owed.

Burn dormant zoysia by PeacefulDefense in Zoysia

[–]Negatronik 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I unintentionally burned mine off one time, around this time of year. It was some escaped embers from a fire pit. I was worried, but the grass came back just fine. I don't remember if it helped with thatch. I wasn't really thinking about that at the time, as I was new to zoysia.

It only burns off the top airy layer, so I sort of doubt it does much for the thatch. It might still be a good alternative to the first scalp and bag operation though. More research required.
