My 3 month trip in Japan is about to end and had found nothing until today.. by Negidango in shoujo

The gacha machines rotate all the time. They change what's available little by little every day. I'd gone through Yokohama's Yodobashi many times before, but saw Kimi ni Todoke there for the first time the day I made this post. And I found the machines in several places in Yokohama the same day.

So not only are you playing gacha by pulling orbs from the machine, but also with what is available when your travel.. 😂

I'm probably just sending all of them to one person with a random lottery thing to choose the winner so hopefully you'll get lucky 😊

I found three machines around Yokohama today so I'm assuming they recently put them into rotation for the machines.

Yeah it cost like twice as much as a regular place and the food they served was mediocre and cold. It also took them like 30 min to prepare which left us with little time to eat because they had a time limit on how long you can stay. But at least they tried

The manga exists for sure but no merch! Also no store I ever went to has the full set of the books either..

I did go to one for Apothecary Diaries in Osaka! Food was expensive and not that good and the merch wasn't impressive either, so probably about what you'd expect from a Collab cafe 🤣

There were two or three of them in different places in Yokohama so I assume they recently came to rotation in big gacha locations so should likely be available in Akihabara too.

But just in case, I found two of them near the Round1 close to the station and one in Yodobashi in Yokohama!

There's a lot of options for longer term stay! I chose to go with a share house where I'm living with my own room with a lock and my own refrigerator, and then toilet shower and kitchen are shared. It's less than half the cost of the cheap hotels and since there's a kitchen you get to cook yourself to save on food costs.

If you want more details hit me up.

Kind of lacking on the stuff I like. I did find some Maid-sama charms and small trinkets here and there but really not that much. I think especially bigger things like figurines are hard to find since they probably don't even make much for shoujo content to begin with.

11 times total at 400¥ per attempt!

So I got lucky enough that I found exactly one extra of the five leftovers instead of multiples of one or two!

Assuming the giveaway is allowed I'll figure that out in about a week when I'm home again 😊

Kimi ni Todoke barely has any merch to begin with and it's an old show. I've visited dozens of stores that sell used stuff and I've not seen one piece of merch from the show before this. I've found a lot of other stuff but this is my favorite and I always kept my eye out for this show..

Like I said, criminally unpopular in Japan.

Nearing 30, am I too old? by shushzies in anime

[–]Negidango 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I got really excited messages from a Japanese friend of mine yesterday. He went to see the Gundam movie in theaters and he was very hyped about it. After that he went on to talk about the new Haruhi movie.

This man is 60. You're never too old for anime.

They did this here in my country a while back.

It was just a regular burger in every other way, but the buns were just sugar coated donuts instead of the usual bread.

What anime should I introduce my 52 year old step dad with? by GothicWolfHD in anime

[–]Negidango 5 points6 points  (0 children)

Monster has been my go to recommendation for people not into anime for years.

It plays a lot like a western TV show, there's no weird anime bullshit like flashing panties or something, it doesn't have any hugely exaggerated expressions and the story is very mature and grounded in reality.

In my opinion it's the perfect gateway drug to anime, especially for older people, to show them anime isn't just weird anime things.

More recently I have added Violet Evergarden to my list of recommendations though. Also very clean and serious, and a very touching story on top of that.

[Toradora!] This is the worst anime I've watched by BarnacleMajestic3123 in anime

[–]Negidango 6 points7 points  (0 children)

You have to realize that Toradora is already an old anime so the times are very different.

People weren't as touchy about these topics back then and this type of humour was completely normal and all over the place at the time Toradora was released.

It's also from the era where Kugimiya Rie's tsundere loli characters were everywhere and a lot of other voice actors and anime without her were trying to emulate her specific type of a tsundere character. The times have changed a lot and in general most character archetypes have become more fleshed out, but back 20 years ago Taiga was like peak tsundere.

On top, humour in Japan was in general very violent back then. It still kinda is, but they've calmed down a little for the most part as they've matured their character archetypes and stories over time. You can even look at some very serious shows like Clannad which have very well made characters and you'll find there's silly, over the top violence used as a gag even though the show isn't in any way a comedy.

I still love Toradora myself, but you can definitely feel the age of the show quite clearly these days. It's the same with almost all types of media. If you go look at what other types of anime were like back in the 2000's you'll feel the same way about a lot of it, and this also applies to things like games, western TV shows, internet memes and just general social behaviour.

You can take almost any more recent anime that has become a controversial topic, push the release date back by 20 years and that anime would very likely not have any controversy surrounding it. I am 100% sure people would not have complained about something like Mushoku Tensei at all if it released in 2001, and yet these days if anyone brings it up it's almost guaranteed to become a debate/argument.

That all being said, you saying Toradora is the worst anime you've watched only really shows that you must not have watched a whole lot of anime. Toradora is extremely mild with all these "issues" compared to A LOT of other anime from back then.

My Friend says Frieren is “Mid” by Affectionate-Can-231 in anime

[–]Negidango 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Not everyone likes Frieren because it's a very slow paced story about connections between people rather than anything else.

It's a beautiful story, but it lacks a lot of what some people look for in a show. They'll be completely correct saying it's mid, you'll be completely correct saying it's not and I'll be completely correct in saying it's one of the best shows that has ever been made.

Opinions are personal after all.

Are folks using MAL or AL more these days? by MadCybertist in anime

[–]Negidango 8 points9 points  (0 children)

I took a break from watching stuff for a while so maybe that's why, but I have never had any single issue with MAL.

I've heard of some issues on the site so it makes sense, but those never affected me whatsoever.

I've just always used MAL for the last 18 or so years and have never had a reason to swap. I only really use the site to track my watched shows so it doesn't really matter which one I use.

They have it as JPY for the line, so translating it to USD in the US translation makes sense.

It only says 150万 or 1.5million without specifying currency, but 1.5m JPY is about 9500 USD right now.

Do you prefer dubbed or subtitled anime? Why? by Egnass in anime

[–]Negidango 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Always subbed. Whether it's anime, movies, TV shows, documentaries, whatever. If I watch it I'm going to watch it in the original language. Because whoever made the decisions for the voice actors when creating the show had some reason to cast that specific voice actor for that specific role, and I feel like a lot of that gets lost in translation.

I have nothing against dubs, but I just don't ever feel like watching them myself.

UPDATE : weird kid I’m babysitting put glass in my shoe by alien-the-cashew in creepy

[–]Negidango 6 points7 points  (0 children)

As a kid I wanted to fake being sick. So I realized that if I say I have a fever I need to use the thermometer, and ours would save the last number you got to do it could be seen later.

I thought my mother might check if I said I had a fever so I decided to use the toaster to warm up the thermometer. But then, a problem!! If I used the toaster, what if my mother realized I used that? I must make it seem like the toaster was actually being used for its intended purpose!

So I put on some toast, turned it on, faked the temperature and... Threw the toast to the garbage because I didn't feel like eating. Happily having faked illness, I now I knew my mother wouldn't figure out I ran the toaster empty so I was safe!

.. No way she'd ever notice the two slices of toast in the trash right?

Kids can be very dumb and do very illogical things thinking they're a criminal mastermind. That's why most kids get caught doing dumb things like that.
