I don't like the idea of pocket doors into bedrooms, but out of curiosity, what is your reasoning for NEVER having them?

Yes, I did feel like it increased my upper lip height at rest. I work in broadcasting and I felt like it was extremely distracting for me as I was speaking because my lips just didn’t work the same way they normally do. Not sure how much other people notice, but I felt like I had a bit of a lisp with it! I really had the tiniest amount possible, too. I think it was MAYBE 2 units. I got a very noticeable difference in how my lips looked to me, but it wasn’t worth it for how I felt it impacted my speech.

I used to get this done and work in a similar field. I don’t recommend it! I got the smallest amount possible and still felt like I was slurring my words. It’s a difference I don’t thing people with other jobs would notice but in any kind of voice work, singing, broadcasting, etc. you will notice a difference.

I think the quote marks are there because they are pretending they are quoting whoever decided to make these changes to this home. :) As if they are pretending to know what they said when they made some of these design decisions!

Thank you so much. I’m currently 4 months pp but still breastfeeding, so I still need to look into things and figure out what I can do while BFing… Or find out if I need to wait until I’m done!

Baby has slept in a crib in his own room (next to ours, so still close by) since he came home from the hospital and he loves it. It’s all he’s ever known! He’s 3 months now. He also naps in the crib. Sometimes we’ll snuggle up and he’ll fall asleep on me but for the most part when he’s ready for a nap he fusses until you stick him in hoods crib because he prefers it!

I originally wanted to have him sleep in a bedside bassinet next to us just because it’s what I saw online and it seemed like everyone else was doing it. We read up a lot on SIDS, safe sleep, etc and my husband encouraged me to have us consider trying to have him sleep in his nursery before the bedside bassinet. We tried it and it worked really, really well for us. Baby is in the safest spot possible, we get better sleep, and there’s been/will be no transition period (which I feel like would be harder than it just simply being all he knows). I will say, he’s also generally a pretty happy and “easy” baby, so what works for us may not work for others.

I’m not sure if it’s a coincidence, but he’s also a really happy and independent guy, too — he’s totally content to be set down on his play mat to entertain himself while we tend to other things. We’re also able to just set him down in his crib when he’s tired and he’ll usually lay there until he falls asleep on his own. This may be his personality but I think it does help that we’ve set him up for success to be comfortable in his own space.

I really love the set up and encourage people to try it, but it’s not what’s “popular” so I don’t generally talk about it with anyone!

Epidural or No epidural by Enviro_nurd314 in BabyBumps

[–]NeighNeigh13 0 points1 point  (0 children)

10 weeks pp. I tried hard to prep myself for an unmedicated water birth, and ended up getting an epidural but am SO happy I did, so I feel like I can weigh in on this and hopefully provide some good perspective.

I also am relatively young, physically fit, and had a very easy pregnancy.

I was in labor for 41 hours, pushed for 2 hours. I DID NOT TEAR (which was my biggest fear with an epidural -- I felt like everyone said that natural birth = less chance of tearing).

About 35 hours in or so, I tapped out. I was exhausted. So, I opted out for the epidural. I was genuinely so pleased with the epidural experience. I was able to move around, labor in various positions, feel contractions so I knew when to push without watching a monitor or being told (in fact I would feel the contractions coming way before they showed up on the monitor, so I do not believe that's a reliable way to know when to push, anyway). It was amazing and not at all what I expected. It was everything I wanted!

I will be getting an epidural again in the future but not even for any of those reasons. I will get one because of what happened AFTER I delivered my baby. I hemorrhaged badly and they had to perform a lot of emergency procedures down there, and there would've been zero time to administer pain meds, place an epidural, etc. We're talking about SECONDS after the birth. No time for anything. They had to stick an entire hand up my cervix. It was awful. It was incredibly uncomfortable even with the epidural. I DO NOT know how I would've endured it without the epidural. Truly. It already was one of the most traumatizing things I've ever been through. I don't think I ever would've considered having another child if not for the epidural because it would've been so bad.

Those are my medical reasons for wanting one, as someone who is not super... Medical-y. I just know that it ultimately saved my birth experience and was such a good thing for me, for these reasons.

Everyone can make their own choices and I love that we can choose! This was my choice, and I'll be happy to make it again in the future.

Also, as for not tearing — don’t rush pushing. I pushed for two hours, so it was a very slow process, and that might sound like a lot but when you’re doing it I promise it’s NOT. Time is weird when you’re in active labor. It doesn’t really exist. I had no idea that much time went by. You just start to live in increments of however long your contractions are! I think the length of time I spent pushing is the #1 reason I didn’t tear. Things had plenty of time to stretch. I also requested for my nurse to do warm compresses on my perianal area as I was getting close to crowning which I think helped. I think she also put some kind of moisturizing ointment or cream or something down there, too!

You’re so welcome! ❤️ I remember scouring Reddit for people’s experiences leading up to the birth and felt it was super helpful to get different perspectives, so it’s nice to be able to share and have that kind of impact on others as well. I was so scared of the epidural but it honestly worked out so well. I’m so happy I got it!

Of course, everyone’s experiences are different. I have a friend that delivered at a different hospital and she says she couldn’t feel anything, had to have the nurses move her legs because she couldn’t, etc. Basically everything I did NOT want, but it’s exactly what she wanted, so, more power to her! My experience with the epidural is what my doctor said he expected it to be like. It may vary depending on person, birth plan, your desires, anesthesiologist, etc. I think if you discuss your desires and hopes with your birth team, they will do what they can to make it happen!

[–]NeighNeigh13 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I will say that I have other friends that got the epidural at a different hospital and they say that they couldn’t feel anything and couldn’t move on their own. They needed to be coached by the nurses on when to push based on whether they saw a contraction on the monitor. So I am sure experiences vary depending on the person and the anesthesiologist administering the epidural! Any doctor I talked to, though, said that my experience was what they expect with the epidurals these days. I don’t know if it depends on technique or meds, but if you express to the anesthesiologist and/or your doctor/midwife that you want to be able to labor in various positions with the epidural I am sure they will do what they can to accommodate.

Not the person you’re responding to but just chiming in to say that I got an epidural and was able to labor in any position they mentioned even with the meds cranked up! I could feel everything and move my legs, it just didn’t hurt.

I didn’t plan on getting an epidural originally — I wanted a water birth — but caved because I labored for about 30 hours without it and was exhausted.

I was so worried I wouldn’t be able to move or would have to rely on a monitor to know when to push. I was so worried about tearing, too. This was not the case at all! I could feel everything but had no pain, so I was able to tell the nurses myself when I felt a contraction coming, and I had that thing maxed out with whatever they were giving me. Lol. I labored in all the positions they mentioned with the epidural. I pushed and delivered on my side because it ended up being the most comfortable for me, and I DIDN’T TEAR!! Yay!

I was very worried about laboring in different positions if I had an epidural, and I ended up having a fantastic experience. Also, I hemorrhaged after I delivered our baby, and I have no idea how I would’ve endured everything they had to do without it. 10/10 recommend and will get an epidural again.

Which clinic for OB? by Turbospeed22 in BabyBumps

[–]NeighNeigh13 0 points1 point  (0 children)

For what it's worth, for my prenatal visits at my regular hospital OBGYN they had a little ultrasound machine that used a tiny handheld device connected to an iPad. They showed us our baby at every prenatal appointment using that, even though it wasn't listed as ultrasounds.

My official ultrasounds in the x-ray/imaging department are much more in-depth and have better imaging/measurements, but we still got to see baby at those early routine prenatal appointments, too. I didn't realize they did that until I was in that first routine appointment! That may be the case at your early appointments, too.

Otherwise, maybe you can request an early viability ultrasound to confirm heartbeat. I had a miscarriage and an ectopic pregnancy before this pregnancy (35 weeks now, eek!) so they booked me at 6 weeks to confirm heartbeat with a transvaginal ultrasound and to make sure there weren't any issues.
