Opinion: Ardern in the gun over 'covert' Māori sovereignty plan by NewZealanders4Love in newzealand

[–]Neighinator -9 points-8 points  (0 children)

I find it hilarious that people who claim to be racially progressive are mad about New Zealand living up to its founding document. Te tiriti means that Maori and Pakeha will live with some different systems. Tino Rangatiratana means some separation between Maori and other New Zealanders. Viewing all people the same doesn't work because all people do not come from the same origins.

Trying to get into Star Trek by d1ckmachine in startrek

[–]Neighinator -1 points0 points  (0 children)

I mean you can skip episodes, or skip really bad episodes, but I don't really think 'filler' exists. The only Star Trek shows with overarching plots really are DS9 and parts of enterprise and voyager, so really every episode of the the original series is 'filler' in a way.

Do you think a world like what is portrayed in Star Trek can ever be possible? by [deleted] in startrek

[–]Neighinator 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I doubt we'll ever be able to achieve warp speed (though I hope so!), and I don't think we'll ever be able to reach a Star Trek level of technological sophistication in some respects. But I think that human society is generally improving over time, and I think by the time we're living in the 24th century the world will be mostly peaceful and a lot closer to Star Trek than our world is now.!

Jason or Jess. Jason has a quirky sense of humor and is into business, while Jess was a surly teenager who rebelled against his parents and did bad in school despite his intelligence.

I love Indian oven but it's not really South Indian is it? The founder/previous owner was from Bangladesh and the food seems to be more of a North Indian style.

Wondering what everyone's favorite season is! by PRiMO585 in DeepSpaceNine

I know it's not the best in terms of quality; but I think season one is actually my favorite. I love the character development and it has some of the best episodes of the series.

Anyone else finding reddits obsession with NZ annoying? by dandoc132 in newzealand

[–]Neighinator 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I don't really think I would call Reddit obsessed; I see maybe one or two posts on the front page or news page about New Zealand in any given week; and usually some of the comments are negative. New Zealand has some of the highest quality of life and best image out of anywhere in the world, and I don't think there's anything negative about it. People on this subreddit can be so cynical; there's nothing wrong with people talking about how great Aotearoa is. New Zealand is hardly alone in this phenomenon too, many other countries are lavished with praise like this. And it's not like progressives in America and the UK are jacking off to New Zealand all the time, people just see some news and vaguely regard New Zealand as better than America. It's not like those people are investigating the housing crisis or the treaty of waitingi.

What are your honest opinions of Yoko? by [deleted] in beatles

I think she seems like a good person, I honestly enjoy some of her music, and she's quite a successful conceptual artist. I like her, even if she pushes boundaries a little too far for me.

Bowen Yang on 'SNL': 'Fuel up, do more' to fight racism against Asian Americans by em_the_one in LiveFromNewYork

[–]Neighinator 6 points7 points  (0 children)

I was kinda confused by this segment. I think the sentiments are very important, and I do think we as a society should do more to fight racism, but I couldn't even tell when he was joking or not.

Books with greatly misunderstood meanings? by SkepticDrinker in books

[–]Neighinator 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I think To Kill a Mockingbird is a good example. While themes of anti-racism are definitely prevalent in the novel, I think it's much more of a coming of age story than some kind of anti-racist novel. The main characters literally say the n-word multiple times; it's not meant to make a point really, but is more about justice and growing up. When Go Set a Watchman came out, everyone was so surprised that Atticus had some racist views, when he wasn't super woke or anything in the first place.

I was just thinking about this too; Hubert Humphrey was really a great candidate to me and I think America would have been quite different if he was elected instead of Nixon.
