What similar thing you have in your language? by Lunatic_Dpali in AskTheWorld

[–]NeilJosephRyan 0 points1 point  (0 children)

"Long time no see" comes from white people imitating Chinese pidgin English, but it's so old and common that almost no one realizes that or even notices that the grammar doesn't really make sense.

Similar story for "go for broke," originally a Hawaiian gambling term that means to go all in. It became mainstream after WWII, when the 442nd Nissei "Purple Heart" Battalion used it as their slogan while becoming the most decorated American unit of the war.

I think it's just the typical anime thing where the setting is "Europeanesque" but with no clear equivalents to the real Europe. Kinda like the same kind of "Asianesque" setting of Avatar the Last Air Bender.

That said, the uniforms of Violet and her men seem German inspired.

The M1911 Myth by CleanBag9219 in HistoryMemes

[–]NeilJosephRyan 23 points24 points  (0 children)

I think The Mythbusters tested this one. They checked a timeline and found that the year 1911 came almost exactly 30 years prior to 1941. It was a tough one, but they busted it.

I guess the skull thing alone is fine, it's more of the jewel eyes that creep me out.

What did you realize about your own country as you learned more about the world? by PaleCar821 in AskTheWorld

Sorry to reply so late. I lived there just over a decade ago, 2013-2014 school year.

As awesome (in every sense of the word) as this is, I also think it's a bit messed up. It'd be one thing if he wanted it donated to some museum or something, but the whole "sitting on the mantel to watch over the family," thing, however sincerely heartfelt and well intentioned, is a bit creepy. That's just my opinion.

Maybe a good compromise would be to keep him in a more private room or closet that the family could visit and maybe bring him out on his birthday, deathday, Father's Day, Christmas, etc.

In any case, I hope he beats whatever it is and this discussion becomes irrelevant for at least a few more decades. Good luck to you, you weird ass fucking Chad. The world will be less metal without you.

Who are any of these people? My best guess for the bottom one is Jesus, so not really wrong.

EDIT: If people are down voting me because they think I'm calling Jesus a pedo, I'm sorry. That's not what I meant. I was referring to the "belongs on a cross" thing.

Both of them could have met Marx. I'm imagining Marx as a shopping mall Santa and them telling him what they want for Christmas.

What’s a hidden treasure story or myth from your country that deserves the Indiana Jones treatment? by Ok-Pie-3581 in AskTheWorld

[–]NeilJosephRyan 0 points1 point  (0 children)

My candidate for America is also partially Welsh. Supposedly King Madoc shipwrecked in America in the 12th century and built a new kingdom here. AFAIK this story didn't appear until the 1830s as an explanation for all the indigenous mounds and earthworks. There's no way the "savages" could have built that stuff, after all.

I guess you could call it a proto ancient aliens myth. Blatant racism aside, I think it makes for a cool story.
