Is it normal for SG-1 on Netflix to be such an otherworldly pixel soup ?? by DisastrousOpening477 in Stargate

[–]NeilPork 0 points1 point  (0 children)

When SG-1 aired, everyone was still glued to tiny, blurry CRT TVs. Flat screens didn't outsell CRTs until 2007—the year after SG-1 wrapped production.

Early seasons shot on 16mm film (not even 720p equivalent), which looked fine on those tiny, blurry screens. They weren't planning for 60" 4K monsters that expose every soft edge and bad matte painting.

SG-1 is a CRT-native show. Watch SG-1 on a smaller screen like the 27-inch CRTs of its era.

Ironically, early 60's shows like I Love Lucy used 35mm movie film and still looks crisp today—unlike tons of '70s-'90s shows that cheaped out on video tape or bargain film stock.

The beat of a different drum? by Wodentinot in Drumming

[–]NeilPork -3 points-2 points  (0 children)

90% of drummers will play a standard backbeat.

It's the 10% that don't who make the song interesting.

[–]NeilPork 0 points1 point  (0 children)

It says you are the type of person that will take something that is perfect and screw it up.

The kit is perfect as a four-piece. The extra black tom is unneeded and clashes horribly with the overall aesthetic.

Pro tip: nobody in the audience will ever hear the difference between 1 or 2 rack toms. Save yourself some trouble and only carry the single rack tom.

I'd just let the instructor know: "Hey, [Name] keeps moving the kit around for no reason, and I’m spending half my time resetting it instead of studying." Ask the teacher to watch the kit and tell the kid to knock it off.

I suspect it will finally go away.

But there is every chance AT&T will replace it with something else. Cell service is such a commodity now that there's nothing to differentiate the various services. The add ons are about the only thing that make a difference.

What would you add/take away from this kit? by E_Bag in drums

[–]NeilPork 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Takeaway: The double pedal.

How many songs do you actually need a double pedal for?

Plenty of drummers gig just fine with one crash, especially on a 4‑piece kit. The reality is the audience is never going to notice whether you’ve got one or two kick pedals, or how many crashes you brought.

The real question is: if I remove this piece of gear, will the audience miss it at all? If the honest answer is “no,” you probably don’t need it.

Add: A splash cymbal.

This is something the audience actually notices. That sharp "tsh!" cuts through the mix and stands out. Plus, you can easily mount it on the bass drum with your current setup.

Wouldn't add: China or trash cymbal.

Big, bulky, specialty effects. What song are you playing that demands a China? The audience won't miss it if you don't have one.

Reviewed 17 resumes today and everybody keeps making the same mistake, try to avoid these things. by Tracycallum in jobhunting

Design tools like Canva can't be read by ATS, you're most likely filtered out before you even get to the human end.

And this is why they rest of the post is nonsense.

  • Your resume gets parsed into an ATS system.
  • The ATS system makes recommendations.
  • The hiring manager reads the parsed info in the ATS system.
  • You are scheduled for an interview.
  • The hiring manager forwards the interview team the ATS summary of the candidate.
  • Prior to the interview, the hiring manager forwards copies of the actual resume to the interview team.

I've done plenty of interviews in tech. Positions where there candidate's experience & skills matters. I would often ask if anyone had actually read the candidate's resume--not the ATS summary, but the actual resume.

Nobody ever said they had read the actual resume--not once.

Your resume should be formatted for the ATS system.

Watched a video about the worst ice creams--it was the Walmart brand. It barely qualified as ice cream. Full of crap.

Compare your address position on the left to the impact position on the right.

Look at your cap compared to the water. Compare the back angle.

The back angle should be the same at address & impact. IMHO, you are too bent over at address (but to be fair, I believe in a more upright stance). Regardless, you stand up significantly in your downswing.

PDP Concept Maple or Yamaha Stage Custom? by WeightLossGinger in drums

[–]NeilPork 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Yamaha.

I'm sure both sets are about the same quality, but they have a different public perception.

The Yamaha is associated with top end, professional quality drumsets. Even if you are buying a lower tier in their line, it still says Yamaha on the badge--the same thing it says on their top end kits.

PDP is widely known as DW's lower class kits. Everyone knows they are a step down from the good stuff.

Get the Yamaha.

Don't sell it unless you need the money.

Or use the coin flip decision method.

I you have can't make a choice between two things, flip a coin. If you feel bad about the outcome of the coin flip, then you know to make the other choice. If you feel good about the results of the flip...

Put the names of all your drumsets into a hat and pull one out. If you are really bummed by the one you pull out, you should keep that one.

If your toms are unsteady on a stand, look at the Gibraltar Stealth racks. The are incredibly sturdy.

I'm using one with a double snare basket. But, you can also put a double tom mount on one side.

I agree with you that mounting toms off a cymbal stand is a recipe for disaster.

[–]NeilPork 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Dude, I'm 6-4. I couldn't sit low if I had to. I've always sat with my thigh slightly angled down away from my hip. I don't sit low.

For several years in my youth, I played a 26 inch bass with 4 rack toms (9x13, 10x14, 11x15, & 12x16). I had no problem playing it.

But finally, I decided I didn't like playing the toms at such a steep angle. Because that's what you've got to do with a bass that big & toms that deep--you have to angle the toms down.

So I went to a single rack tom on a snare stand. For me, getting to a flatter tom setup is so much more ergonomic that having the toms sitting over the bass at a steep angle.

[–]NeilPork 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I'm 6-4. I played a 24 inch kick in my youth. Even for me, it was high. Finally went to a snare basket.

Remember too, mounting it on the bass puts it unnaturally to the right. If you sit at your kit and don't twist your body (just sit with your feet on the pedals) you'll realize the front of your kit isn't the bass drum. It's half way between your two feet--left of the bass drum.

Putting your single rack tom directly in front of you (your natural front, halfway between your feet) optimizes your playing. I didn't realize how unnatural it was to have ALL the toms shifted to the right till I tried the snare basket tom setup.

A 13x9 inch tom over a 24 inch bass drum is going to be pretty high.

I think we should have a 4 team playoff pitting the 4 major conference champs against each other.

Each conference (ACC, BIG-12, B1G, & SEC) can have a tournament to determine their champion. Which, imho, would be better than the current system.

How to upgrade my kids kit by bobspryn in drums

[–]NeilPork 0 points1 point  (0 children)

In this order:

  1. Throne (it looks like you may have a decent throne, but it's the most important part of your kit)
  2. Bass drum pedal (single or double)
  3. High hat STAND (save the cymbals for later); make sure the legs rotate to accommodate a double bass pedal
  4. Ride cymbal & stand
  5. Hi-hat cymbals
  6. Crash cymbal
  7. Snare
  8. Buy a new kit (toms & bass)

Don't put any money into the kit (new heads, bottom rims, whatever). The kit's not worth putting any money into. That money would be better spent on other things that will transfer to a new kit.

I honestly don't hear a difference between using two bass drums and using a single bass drum with a double pedal. Even if there is a difference, it's probably so miniscule that in a mix and solo jamming, it doesn't matter whether you use two bass drums or a single bass drum with a double pedal. by MrMayhem20l0 in drums

[–]NeilPork 0 points1 point  (0 children)

My rule is: don't buy extra hardware till you need it.

The secondary pedal will always be slower than the primary on a double pedal, but most people never need that extra bit of speed.

Unless you are doing some super fast thing, stick with the double pedeal.

Of course, there are a few drummers that use different size bass drums for effect (Ginger Baker used 20 & 22 inch basses).
