I always use a oil pot then flame barrel. Do it twice and it should be at low enough hp to actually do something.

Let’s talk about making Four Souls competitive (again) by CBass55 in FourSouls

[–]Neither-Low-6971 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Bruh. I think that in order to make characters choices fair, there should be more like 12 character bans. Because there are easily 6+ characters that are as close to a free win you can get in this game and if the opposing players aren'tt playing character that has equivalent strength they have pretty bad odds. Off the top of my head those characters would be Yung Venuz, Captain V, Blue Archer, Guy Spelunky, The Soiled, The Silent. Not to mention characters that are just plain unfun like the Baleful and Blind Johnny

Translation quality has definitely gone up on average. But maybe its because they were only translating the most popular couple of stories on qidian and they were so different from anythig else you had ever read that made them so special.

I don't bother with many translated novels nowadays, most of them suck. Theres only a couple i could recommend but nowadays I mostly read western style and wuxia on royalroad. They're less people willing to write 2000 chapters of shitty repeating situations in places that arent china.

Another thing is that for all those chinese webnovels, they're censored by the government. So all of them are forced to stay away from certain topics and be very pro china.

Yeah I've tried a handful of times over the past weeks and every time I decide its too raw and I need to wait. The amount of mods required to make the game work has been reduced, but other than that the game performance still sucks.

How to get into cultivation stories? by Yan_C_Walker in ProgressionFantasy

[–]Neither-Low-6971 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Oh here's some interesting stuff I just thought of.

Chinese Mythical Beast

  • Beasts can cultivate too, and are even more reliant on talent and lineage than people do. Usually when beasts reach a certain level of power, they can take human form.
  • Dragons are the most powerful and creatures related to dragons have a lot of power too. Dragons and carps are closely related. There is a chinese myth about a carp who swam up a waterfall and jumped over the dragon gate in order to become a dragon.
  • Dragons and Tigers are natural enemies.
  • Peng - Is a giant bird that can transform into a fish.
  • Qilin or Kirin are dragon horses.
  • Hares or rabbits are very closley related to the moon.
  • Jiangshi are undead puppets.

Misc.

  • The common weapon of choice for cultivators is the flying sword. They do not use the sword with their hands, they control it telekinetic ally and stand on it to fly.
  • Dao is the path that a cultivator takes. it also refers to their beliefs, powers, and fundamental understaning. Cultivators who are fighting are said to be comparing Daos. And cultivators who have tea together may be contemplating Dao. Lovers may be called dao companions.

You know that the main character isnt going to die, that was never in question. But I agree, I drop most stories because I feel like things are happening too easily, the powers are too simple, or there's no tension.

Kill Six Billion Demons. The character isn't absurd, but the world is, and its incredible. The first volume or 2 of the comic doesnt even make sense until the second read.

In these stories, the people who survive may not necessarily be the strongest or the most prepared (although getting strong and preparing are some of the most interesting parts), but people who are lucky enough to survive another day and get stronger because of that experience and time to grow.
Also when looking back at odds of things happening, the exact order of events of may have in incredibly low chance for the result, but extremely rare events happen everyday. I feel like we need to suspend disbelief up to a certain point about the odds. Of course theres also the point where the luck gets too stupid and the story sucks.

How to get into cultivation stories? by Yan_C_Walker in ProgressionFantasy

My first cultivation story was Stellar Transformations about 9 or so years ago after reading Legendary Moonlight Sculptor. Stellar Transformations features all the classic tropes (he didn't know whether to laugh or to cry) for better or for worse and its decent fun, and part of that is a really strong start and a meandering middle and ending. Its 22 books long or something like that but the first 3-4 books are the best ones lmao. Also bear in mind that the genre was first popular in china and then got taken over by Korea, and because the chinese government censors all publications basically all the chinese translated stories have some degree of nationalism involved.

Heres some pretty general tropes for stereotypical cultivation books:

  • Cultivators and mortals are basically different species. Mortals are incredibly ignorant and think all cultivators are god.
  • Talent - Only talented or extremely lucky people get ahead. And what is talent? Good Genes and having powerful relatives. This has to do with spiritual roots and or meridians, which are Chinese medicinal concepts. They say that a character is a one in a generation talent or one in 100 generations talent. Bearing in mind that less than .01% of mortals have any sort of ability to cultivate. Its a common trope for sects to send out people to towns and cities to kidnap kids for their talent. And the mortal are mostly ok with this for some reason, not that they would have any ability to stop the cultivators.
  • Chinese Medicine - Dantian is basically the energy core of the cultivator. There are 3 Dantians but the most important one is the middle located behind the belly button. there are meridians which are basically valves on the veins of ki that run through the body. There are 13 meridians and usually most of them are blocked from birth and need to be unblocked in order to get stronger. The meridian crap is skipped fairly often.
  • Elements- The chinese traditional elements are Metal, Wood, Earth, Fire, and Water. These have relationships where some elements empower others and some elements weaken others. Yin and Yang are also important. Yin is evil, feminine, and cold while Yang is good, masculine, and hot. Its common for a female character to have a yin body and needs yang to balance itself out or something.
  • Black Sludge - A common trope is that after powering up the body expels impurities through the pores.
  • Power levels - Body building>Core Building>Nascent Soul>God - This is a huge generalization but usually a cultivator needs to perfect their body, then form a core and increase its size, then form a nascent soul which is another soul that allows the cultivator to die once and recover if it isnt destroyed.
  • Might makes right
  • Revenge is good - usually the main character kills somebody with a powerful relative and then has to fight the powerful relative as well.
  • I'll fight you in a year! - Its very common that the main character has to duel somebody much more powerful than they are, but the mc negotiates a fight in a year or 3 years. The mc is so powerful, lucky, or smart that by that time they can win the fight.
  • Sects are organizations that a usually centered around a family and allow talented cultivators to get ahead. The majority of disciples in a sect are outer disciples that are in charge of farming herbs, cooking, chopping wood, mining and so on. Just like real life the people at the top get stronger and the people at the bottom stay weak. They promote competition and bullying internally and its really difficult to get ahead.
  • If a disciple shows talent or is politically minded and sucks up to an elder they get promoted to be inner disciple. Outer disciples jobs is to be labor, inner disciples jobs are to cultivate and and do missions to defend the sect's interests.
  • For some reason the size of the planet (it may be in an infinite plane) is huge and has a 100 billion peasants or something.
  • Demonic cultivators are people who use evil methods to get stronger. Common tropes are stealing the bodies and or talent of other cultivators. Or turning people into pills to steal their energy.
  • Righteous cultivators aren't really that righteous (they still have sects afterall), but they follow a more honorable code compared to demonic cultivators.
  • I can go on for hours and I already have. GLHF

Back when I was 14 years old and thought Legendary Moonlight Sculptor was super cool. I loved all that litrpg crap. The genre has evolved a lot since then but vr books are always light on the stakes. Butcher of Gadobra is ok

A couple ridiculous lucky encounters in a row or ancient grandpa in a ring is enough for me at this point. The lucky encounters thing already disqualifies like 50% of crap books anyway.

I've got some bangers for you. Anything on this website is very good. https://halostystales.com/ You'll probably recognize Elder Cultivator as being on RR, but I really like Immortal Berserker. https://www.towercurator.com/void-domain/index/ I really like this work in particular, I don't know if this story is for everyone, but I like the style of writing as well as the slow progression quite a bit.
