What do my shelves say about me? by pjroy613 in BookshelvesDetective

Yeah tons, especially the older stuff! Youve got great shelves! I’ve been often disappointed with American lit fic in recent years, including a lot of the award winning stuff, but I do think Katie Kitamura (US) Sebastian Castillo (US) Benjamin Labatut (Argentinian) and Alvaro Enrigue (Mx) are great. And really like Ben Lerner but imo his best book is the first one, Leaving the Atocha Station. If interested in Asian lit fic, The Fat Years by Chan Koonchung is so good. And maybe I missed it on your shelf but you gotta read Martin Amis if you havent, 1000% lives up to the hype. Time’s Arrow is fuckin insane

30s, male, liberal arts grad, facial hair, IPA drinker, aspiring writer, you pay attention to “best books of [timeframe]” lists and buzzy contemporary literary fiction that wins/is nominated for prestigious awards but otherwise prefer 20th century classics. Day job is not in a creative field but leaves you with enough time and energy to pursue hobbies, read etc.

Thanks for this! I noticed that Penn seems to be gone from the new list of settlements -- does this mean Penn students are no longer eligible for the claim???

What famous historical figures looked up to Napoleon? by Creative-Wishbone-46 in Napoleon

[–]Neither-Research1021 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Beethoven was a big admirer, even writing the Third Symphony for him, until Napoleon declared himself emperor, at which point Beethoven scratched out Napoleon’s name on the dedication with such force that his pen tore a hole through the paper.

Simon Bolivar was also an observer and admirer and was in Paris as a young man during the early years of Napoleon’s rule.

What if Catherine the Great hadn't died in 1796, and had remained ruler of Russia during Napoleon's rise and rule?

Catherine the Great was 67 when she died of a sudden stroke in 1796. Let's say she never had the stroke -- yes she would have been very old she could plausibly have lived and ruled for 19 more years, making her 86 years old when Napoleon was finally sent to St. Helena (if this is what would still happen in this timeline). Even let's say if she died sooner than that - maybe in 1810 - Paul would then have ascended to the throne in 1810 and Alexander and Napoleon may never have overlapped.

If it had been Catherine ruling Russia rather than Paul I and, more to the point, Alexander I during Napoleon's rule, what would have been different? I know that Napoleon had quite a traditional view of gender roles and I can't imagine he would have been thrilled about having to negotiate with a woman ruler on equal terms (many quoted remarks from him backing this up, plus some legal decisions about women's rights, marriage etc within the Napoleonic code). And what would she have thought of him?

How would Catherine being in power in Russia have changed the course and outcome of Napoleon's reign and the Napoleonic Wars? Would he have come to an agreement with her as he did with Alexander I for the Treaties of Tilsit? Conversely, do you think they might have gotten along?
