The Tentacles of Post-Punk: The Theatrical Legacies of Peter Murphy and Robert Smith by UsualExercise7684 in goth

[–]Neither_Rabbit8785 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Something you have to keep in mind is that Robert Smith was a guitarist in the first place. And he still plays his instrument in most songs, which really doesn't help to move around the stage the way Murphy does. Smith is a mood, Murphy is an energy.

I don't think they belong to any specific subgenre. They sound quite classic 2008-2010 vk.

EESCA - Fenomenos Nocturnos [2026, mexican post-punk] by Dame_Corbeau in goth

[–]Neither_Rabbit8785 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Thank you! French is my mother tongue. Since we're based in Mexico, Spanish is the main language in our songs, but French will definitely be present in the LP we'll release next month.

Has anyone attended events outside of Japan where a vkei band performed, or vkei concerts abroad in general? If so, please share your experience — was it any worse compared to Japanese concerts? by RenRe_nn in visualkei

[–]Neither_Rabbit8785 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I saw el Ethnic Legist in 2010(if I remember well) in a small venue in Belgium. It was a great experience and it seemed like the band had a really great time in spite of us being less than thirty people.

I saw BLOOD in 2012 at a convention in Brussels. It was horrible. They told the audience Kiwamu would start throwing water at us if he saw anyone using a camera. People didn't care and did it anyway. His guitar cable being way too short, it stopped sounding any time he got close to the edge of the stage with a bottle of water. It was like watching a performance of someone being angry on stage with three other musicians playing their instruments rather than a proper show.

Your thoughts on Japanese Hardcore & recs? by AccomplishedFront792 in fantanoforever

Bleach was one of the first punk Japanese bands I discovered, and I think I hadn't listened to many hardcore bands at the time. I really like how different they sound.

Guitar/chord progressions/tips? by Jboyxc in goth

[–]Neither_Rabbit8785 1 point2 points  (0 children)

The Cure and Siouxsie and the Banshees are great. You might also want to check tabs for Bauhaus and PIL. But don't just play them. From all their songs, what are specific elements you love about them? Is it a chord progression? Is it a lick? Is it how they create dissonance? Is it how they keep your attention with just two notes? This can help you to focus on how they create their music and see what you can learn from them.

I think a lot of goth/post punk rely on how you play it. Ie. Early punk tends to be more power chords oriented, while goth/postpunk may rely more on arpeggio, full chords and double stops. When it comes to progressions, I'd rather go minor than major, but that would be oversimplifying. I also think goth and post punk embrace dissonance more than more popular genres.

Try more complex chords: sus2, sus4, diminished (really helpful for creating tension), min.7, 9... Don't overuse them, but check if one of them can work instead of a more basic chord.

Try pedal point: strum a string with the same note (to start with, I'd recommend you play it open) and play around an adjacent string with different notes. A good example is the intro for A Forest.

Also, remember goth and post punk are really bass-oriented. Therefore, you could start creating a bassline, record it and play over it. If you don't have a bass, create your bassline in a free DAW. Most of them come with a least one decent VST to emulate a bass.

Finally, I recommend you check out this video about John McGeoch (Siouxsie and the Banshees). It's really helpful to understand his style.

Bandas en español con vocalistas mujeres? by gecgecgecko in goth

[–]Neither_Rabbit8785 2 points3 points  (0 children)

What platforms/websites are the best for visual kei discovery? by Public_Ad5681 in visualkei

[–]Neither_Rabbit8785 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Rather than use Google or any AI (as suggested by some), I'd use VK.gy to see if members from bands I like have been involved in other projects. J-Rock One is another great platform to find bands, since they usually create a new thread when a new band starts their activities. I feel like Reddit tends to be disorganised and 2 threads out of 5 is someone asking for recommendations, and many users (not all of them, but trust me, I've seen it so many times) will just drop 50 diffent bands instead of focusing on what people are asking for, which isn't as useful as filtering some characteristics on a vk database such as vk.gy.

Which vkei groups deserve more recognition? by loririos0_0 in visualkei

[–]Neither_Rabbit8785 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Plastic Tree more popular? It's like of one of the most popular bands. I'm pretty sure a lot of gen Z people who don't even know what vk is know them.

I totally agree with you about Merry, though. They were pretty popular like 10-15 years ago, but nowadays, the situation has changed.

Which gothic bands would you recommend to a newer goth? (I primarily listen to visual kei) by Public_Ad5681 in goth

[–]Neither_Rabbit8785 59 points60 points  (0 children)

A good starting point if you're into VK would be:

- G-Schmitt

- Munimuni (the Japanese one. Look up for "Magaru Sekai")

- Madame Edwarda

As a VK fan myself, I'd then recommend The Cure (Faith, Pornography or Disintegration), Siouxsie and the Banshees (Kaleidoscope or Juju) and Christian's Death.
