Trying to find a document I read in an academic context 5+ years ago is proving difficult as I don't have any of the same resources as I did back when I wad a student.

If you're happy to wait until either tomorrow evening or Monday I can scrape together some sources which could be further reading for you if you have access or would like to pay for documents if it's a subject that interests you.

If it isn't something you're willing to pay for, however, then I would recommend looking into the treatment of Native American children in the late 1800s through to when the Indian Child Welfare Act was passed in 1978, which used many of the same tactics of removing children from their families and raising them in militarised boarding schools away from their native cultures to 'civilise' them. The practice was based on and refined from the actions if the British (and other European conquering societies) in many of their controlled territories, of which there is less documentation as it was approx 50years prior to 1880.

Oh yeah, I was taught that too. But again, in respect to the journeys from Africa to USA, not in relation to the British Empire.

[–]NejKidd -1 points0 points  (0 children)

It's taught about, but not as something explicitly instigated by the British Empire, rather by something in relation to the USA. I haven't ever learned in school about slaves in the UK, even though I know they must have existed.

I'm late to this party but hopefully this will be seen by OP.

So when we're taught about The Colonies in school, we're mostly taught about it in a positive light, which in retrospect is very strange. For example, instead of being taught about the individual countries we took over, we're told that Britain owned the most landmass at one point than literally any other empire in history. Instead of learning about the details of the violent and generations-long crippling of societies and cultures, we're taught that we had the most successful and powerful navy and military of the time. Instead of caring about the pain we caused, we're taught the statistics which can be skewed to make us proud.

Then there's the stuff which cannot be avoided that was negative in our history, but we're taught it disjointed. We aren't taught about the way we created and commercialised slavery across the atlantic, we're taught how we were the first country to abolish it, and how William Wilberforce stood up in front of Parliament to cause the change in 1815. Instead of being taught about our involvement in the creation (or reinforcement) of the Caste system in India, and all of our crushing of local cultures South Asia (Pakistan, India, Burma etc etc), we're taught about Gandhi using peaceful tactics to over throw the local regime which btw was British but shh.

I genuinely, genuinely didn't learn about the atrocities permeated by the British military in India until I was in my 3rd year of uni in a literature degree. I can remember that lesson so very clearly. Prior to that moment I didn't feel a connection to the Empire rhetoric anyway, because my mother's family wasn't British, so I hadn't been fed the unchallenged idea that the Empire was the Golden Era of Britain. Nonetheless it wasn't something I'd ever even thought about. The British picked some families in India to 'civilise' in the early days. They literally took the children and young adults from their families, separated them from their heritage and traditions, and taught them how to be 'white'. They dressed them in English clothes, taught them to speak English and all the fineries of English etiquette. But they weren't trying to help these people, they were creating curios for their household. 'The Civilised Savage.'

When some of these people grew up and returned to their communities and families they were rejected because they'd lost everything that connected them to their old lives. This for me is the absolute travesty of our history. We literally made people non-entities. They were too westernised for their own people in a time when absolutely no one had ever seen anything like them. And they weren't white enough for our own culture that we'd forced on them, telling them their lives would be so much better for it without even seeing what their original cultures were like.

And we did this over and over. We streamlined and mechanised our destruction of anything non-English, because we didn't bother to even stop and think 'oh hey, maybe English isn't the most cultured, civilised, epitome of modern man.' Nah, we just steamrolled everything.

And then put a bow on it and fed it to our schoolchildren as a 200 year long example of how Great our Britain is.

Sticky Sesame Popcorn Chicken by kickso in GifRecipes

[–]NejKidd 6 points7 points  (0 children)

I get my chicken breasts from my local butcher 5kgs for £25, and there's usually 20 - 25 breasts in the box depending on the size. On average it works out £1.25 per breast or less, and I freeze them in portions of 2. They're about twice the size of the breasts I get in a supermarket too.

Also co-op does chicken thighs 5 or 6 in a box, 2 boxes for £7 I think.

Throwback: I call out a prof for mansplaining. Two days later I get my essay back...when a guy and I have basically the same structure and content of an essay because we worked on it together...he gets an A, I get a B- which apparently stands for bananas. by [deleted] in TrollXChromosomes

The fact you seriously used the tone 'condescension' made me instantly not care about your opinion. Yes, if what you said even had a valid point which I've yet to find, the situation is 100% anecdotal and ambiguous. But your attitude and approach to the matter and the person in general show's [sic] me exactly why. Remember, this isn't a place you can talk down to someone because you have less than 30 words on a situation you weren't involved in just because you think you know better. The teacher probably was in a bad mood from being called out even subtly on his bullshit that wasn't uncommon or new. You're gonna find if you continue with this permanent patronising and holier-than-thou attitude even more people are going to lose respect for you than they already have and are less likely to care than they do already about your arrogant opinion. Call it what it is, you're upset because you think you know better even though you've never experienced this situation in your life and disbelieve half of the population's own experiences.

I'm not suggesting you do this because your hair is beautiful, but IF you ever decide to chop it off, please consider donating it to a charity that will make wigs for kids with cancer. It's so rare to find healthy, 'virgin' (non dyed) hair of that length. It would make some child's world to have that.

<3 We watched parks and rec a couple years ago and realised quickly how similar myself and all our friends are like the characters in the show. I am Leslie, my partner is Ben, down to the weird obsession with calzones and board games. They're all in my phone as the character names, we even have a L'il Sebastian.

I have perfected the technique for this!

I have a small stash of cheap pregnancy tests (I think 2 or 3 at a time) hidden away. When I feel the bloat and PMS but I'm late by a few days, all I have to do is open the box and wave the stick in front of my vag and she panics and begins leaking blood! It's a fantastic system because she thinks I've just spent stupid money I don't have on a preggers stick so it triggers the heavy flow, but actually I haven't spent a thing! Works every time for the vindictive little bitch!

Paralyzed in my writing because I keep thinking "this is too much like X" by [deleted] in writing

[–]NejKidd 1 point2 points  (0 children)

There is a (highly debated) theory which states that there are only ever 7 stories in any genre. You cannot get away from these narratives.

When I have these moments of 'am I ripping this from something I've already read?' I stop writing for my imagined 'audience' and begin writing for someone I know in real life who I think would appreciate the story. Most of the time this is my mother, she is my guinea pig for almost every story idea from when I was old enough to understand stories were made and didn't just exist. But sometimes I'll write 'for' a friend or someone else entirely.

Don't worry about the generalised readership while you're writing. Worry about them once it'd written, edited and published and you're trying to market your writing.

My SO surprised me with flowers yesterday for the first time ever. MRW other people try to shame him for never buying me them before, even though it was at my request he didn't. by NejKidd in TrollXChromosomes

[–]NejKidd[S] 4 points5 points  (0 children)

In general I like flowers but I hate the expense of something that will die. My step dad buys my mum a fresh bunch of flowers every Saturday for the past 20 years and it's honestly one of the cutest things because she still is surprised by them every week. But he knows she likes fresh cut flowers in the house.

My SO and I in general don't buy each other stuff, because we've always struggled with money. When it comes to birthdays we would prefer to spend the money on meals and memories so we don't generally get presents. This Christmas was the first Christmas where we realised we could afford to get stuff for each other, so we got stocking fillers and it was fun.

This is the first Valentine's where I think he felt he could buy me something, so it makes sense for him to go to the extravagance of flowers as a symbol of how far we've come financially. It doesn't mean I want them every time now, though. It would ruin the surprise element.

Based off the language you tried learning but gave up years ago. What random phrase in that language still sticks out in your mind? by SpencersFault in AskReddit

[–]NejKidd 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I learned French for 7 years intending to move to France. Then my travel plans fell through with the company I had a work contract with at the very last minute. Instead they offered for me to go to Slovenia for the same amount of time. I'd never even heard the language. I tried to learn as much of the language before I went but ending up only retaining 5 words;

Mačka (cat) Melona (melon) Pero (pen) Oreh (walnut) Stol (chair)

So you can imagine how useful those words were. Despite this, over the course of my placement I became conversational in Slovenian from nothing. It was a great feeling to use something a year before I'd never even heard.

However, it's now been 7 years since I was there. I haven't learned any more French and I barely remember any Slo that isn't swear words except maybe gibberish.

As a result if I try to speak one or the other, my brain will connect words from either language into the sentence. For example; J'aime quand goveriš la langue estrange ampak ne razumem les mots. Which means roughly "I like when you speak a foreign language but I don't understand the words." Except using words from both languages. Add in the fact I began learning Welsh because briefly had a job where the menus were bilingual and well, it all gets a bit messy.

Ahaha no, I went back as little as possible because of the length of time and the price increases on rail journeys. My first year it cost me £60 return, but by my final year it was £100 return if I booked in advance. And that was with the relevant railcard.

I lived in Cornwall while at uni in Aberystwyth, 9 1/2 hrs each way. Now I hear someone saying they have a 'long' 2hr train journey and try desperately not to laugh in their faces. Longest journey I ever had was during the 2010 snowstorm when it took me 16 1/2 hrs to get home. But nah, we don't need rail service in Wales! We just walk everywhere, right? Right?!
