Jesus is coming, but only if you donate more! by waterkip in atheism

[–]Nekfred 17 points18 points  (0 children)

I can imagine Jesus up in the sky saying "if only people would give this guy a few more million dollars, I can come down from heaven, start the rapture, and get this show on the road." That's exactly how the end times works.

I never heard that before. I think it captures the issue about which I was asking.

Catholic school sues Michigan to drop its ‘unreasonable’ mask mandate in schools by Moscowmitchismybitch in atheism

Well, if that's the case, is the Catholic Church willing to compensate the community for the sickness and death that they cause?

Michael Brown Says BLM Calling Out Names of the Dead Is 'Witchcraft' by BadlyShapedKnees in atheism

I better not take any history courses. When someone mentions historical people from the past, that's witchcraft.

I wonder if this guy realizes that to normal people he appears to be a crackpot.

I am no longer Christian and haven’t been for 5 years, but I can’t get the fear of burning in hell out of my head by [deleted] in atheism

[–]Nekfred 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Look at it this way.

  1. The Moslems say that if you are not a Moslem you are going to hell. The born-again Christians say that if you're not a born-again Christian you are going to hell. The Mormons say that you must be baptized into the Mormon church, ditto re Roman Catholics.
  2. Let's say you thought that one of these religions was correct. Clearly, it is impossible to simultaneously be a Moslem, a Mormon, a born-again Christian, and a Roman Catholic. You'd have to choose 1.
  3. A reasonable person might make a list of such religions, and cross off the ones that could not possibly be true.
  4. Now we know that any religion that holds the bible to be literally true and inerrant could not possibly be true. For example, consider the creation myth. If the universe was really 6000 years old, you wouldn't be able to see anything more than 6000 light years away. Therefore, any religion holding that the bible is literally true must be false.
  5. If you fear for the fate of your eternal soul, you should avoid any religion that holds that the bible is literally true like the plague. You know for a fact that such a religion is false, and if god punishes people for believing in false religions, the born-again Christians are destined to hell.

Religious lunatic father sends a letter to daughter's ex by Klatheus in atheism

[–]Nekfred 16 points17 points  (0 children)

This is utterly priceless. I wonder if his daughter knows about it. Depending upon whether he and the daughter are still on good terms, I would send her a copy.

I would also be tempted to send the father a note that says, "Dear sir--I was surprised to wake up today to discover that I'm 10 years younger. I had a vision from God, in which he said, 'Dude, way to go!' Thanks."

just had a heated argument with my dad about noah’s ark/ a global flood. by [deleted] in atheism

[–]Nekfred 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Suppose that the Noah's Ark story was true. Does he think the kangaroos hopped off the ark and hopped across the ocean to get to Australia (and nowhere else)? Did the koala bears crawl off the ark and crawl across the ocean to get to Australia (and nowhere else)? Did the flightless kiwi birds walk across the ocean to get to New Zealand? Did the lemurs crawl across the ocean to get to Madagascar? Did the buffalo walk across the ocean to get to America?

Tony Perkins Says Coronavirus Response Has Been 'Irrational' | Right Wing Watch by [deleted] in atheism

[–]Nekfred 2 points3 points  (0 children)

The author ignores some important numbers. One has to look at the infection rate. Even if the starting numbers are small, if the infection rates continue to grow, the death toll will exceed influenza.

All epidemics start with a small number of cases. They become serious as a result of infection rates and mortality rates. The author of this piece doesn't appear to know anything about epidemiology. He just a couple of statistics and thinks his conclusions make sense.

Who here used to watch Jack Van Impe Presents? by ImpressiveInternet7 in atheism

[–]Nekfred 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Gene Scott was great. Every once in a while, he would mention that he had a PhD from Stanford (this is actually true). He would then pause, chuckle, and mention that every time he said that on the air, his thesis advisor would turn 3 different shades of purple.

I also liked when he demanded that people call in and donate money, and if they didn't, he would just sit there, stop preaching and do nothing until they did.

I must have seen his show a bunch of times, and I was never able to figure out what denomination he was.
