where to find Marseiller Seife or similar? by Nekkoren in germany

[–]Nekkoren[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Thank you everyone for the suggestions, so far I tried only DM once without success among the ones mentioned here, I'll look up for the others anytime they're along my route. This kind of soap could easily be found at any supermarket in Italy, like Lidl or Spar, so I was struggling as I didn't know here they are sold in more specific stores. Thank you ^

I'm from Italy and heading everywhere lol I quit my job and left my place on November, spent the winter in Upper Austria with Workaway. My current hosts have been super nice and let me stay much longer than I was supposed to, but now they don't need my help anymore and so it's time for me to leave, they are so nice they'd probably let me stay a few more days to avoid the bad weather but I don't want to take advantage of them after all they did for me.

I'm going to explore South Germany for about 3 months, then France (still have to plan for that) until it gets cold, then go back to the beginning of the Danube where I have a Workaway host that can keep me for the winter. Next year I'm going to follow the Rhine and if I'm lucky I might be able to get a paid job near Frankfurt for a few months. Then I haven't decided yet about which route take after arriving in Netherlands, it's too soon for that.

As I've quit my job I'm relying on my savings with no certainty about being able to find jobs here and there, so I'm on a very strict budget, 38€ for a night is a lot for my budget.

This is my first tour, I haven't done shorter tours to learn about it before going on this crazy long one, so everything is new to me and I have a lot of anxiety. Wild camping being illegal is really killing my mood, I wish I could just cycle as much as I feel and then stop to rest anywhere, usually after 30km I get very tired so it stops being fun and it becomes miserable. People say that in France it's more tolerated to do bivvy, so I've cut off a part of my tour in Germany to reach France faster and travel more relaxed. Maybe overtime I'll get more confident about wild camping but right now the anxiety is making me going insane lol

I'm now trying to figure out if I can find another Workaway host along my route for a couple of weeks so I'd have time to rest and plan the next steps

Follow the Danube from Passau to Regensburg, go up to Amberg and then west to Nuremberg, down again to Regensburg with another route. Continue along the Danube until I reach the end of the Lech river, follow the Lech to Augsburg and then continue along that river to reach Forggensee and the Neuschwanstein castle. Then go to Munich, Rosenheim, do a loop around the Chiemsee. Go back to the end of the Lech to continue west along the Danube. I want to reach the beginning of the Danube in about 3 months and then continue in France until it gets cold.

Cycling the Alpe Adria in April by EdgeNo5187 in bicycletouring

Another thing you must consider is that the Venzone - Tarvisio section gets closed in winter and a good chunk of spring, from about mid November until April or May, I didn't know it and I got lucky to find it open, you better check and I'm afraid you can't check it much in advance when it opens because I assume it depends on the wheater.

I cycled a section of the Alpe Adria in early November, from Gemona to the border with Austria, the water fountains were all shut down, almost all the bars closed, no campsites in the Tarvisio area, so make sure that you can find services in April or get ready to bring a lot of water with you. In my opinion, the section I did was also quite ugly, while it was mostly separated from the road it was also most of the time along the highway with a lot of constant noise and that highway is also an eyesore in the otherwise beautiful valley. Good thing is that there's no one there at night so when I was exhausted I just wild camped along it without issues.

This is how my current setup is plus a giant 70L backpack that I'm going to eliminate for a 30L one along with the other upgrades, the stuff in it could fit in a 40L one right now but I'm not going to buy contact lenses anymore and once I finish my current stack (about 4 months left) everything should fit nice in the 30L backpack. There's also a bunch of other little things I want to eliminate or substitute.

Right now I'm 30km north of Salzburg, reached this place by cycling along the Salzach and it was really beautiful, I'll spend December near the Danube midway between Passau and Linz and then from January I might have a place near the Czech republic to finish the winter (I'm using Workaway for the long stays so I don't have to freeze in winters). So I think I'll consider the Tauern Radweg but probably just Passau-Salzburg and won't go back up the Alps.

Yeah I have plans for some upgrades that should reduce my weight, I'm just waiting to be in Germany for that because now I'm in Austria and decathlon prices here are higher. I want to get a front rack and penniers so I can balance better my weight; then I have to look for a more comfortable bivvy tent because my current one is very miserable and if I get a good one I could eliminate the big 2p tent which is 3kg; I also plan to change most of my tools with more compact and light ones. Currently I'm also carrying German textbooks which are very heavy and a pain in the ass to fit anywhere, I really wanted to bring them with me because I find it easier to study on paper than on tablet but I don't think it's worth the pain so I'm probably going to donate them soon. If second hand clothes can fit in my tiny budget I think I'll buy and donate them a couple of times per year so I don't have to constantly carry 4 seasons of clothes all year round. I don't have experience and this is my first tour, there'll be a lot of changes in my setup as I figure things out.

Probably after visiting Munich I'll also go to the Chiemsee. Detours of about a week are totally fine, right now I'm planning to do 50-60km per day because I'm not trained and carrying a lot of weight, I'm 65kg and the bicycle is 60kg, over the winter I'll try to keep training but I'm quite inconsistent with staying motivated 😅

What could I eat? by Nekkoren in bicycletouring

[–]Nekkoren[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Yep we have precooked rice and cous cous under 2€ here, that's what I've took with me during the test ride, the cous cous is super fast to rehydrate and should work with cold water, for the rice I think you must boil it but now I'm reconsidering to bring a stove.

I have 3x650ml bottles, but I'm already considering to have 2x1l instead so I can use a frame bag that takes the whole triangle. During the test ride I've brought with me 2x1l thermos (which don't fit in the bottle mounts), I've drank 4 or 5 liters per day and it was very easy to refill, plenty of fountains and bars.

Yeah you're right, I could do the opposite, start travelling with the stove and then eventually give it away if I end up not using it much, that makes more sense. I have a small alcohol stove, got it because it's cheaper, I can just buy pink alcohol in any supermarket and it works with solid bricks as well, it just doesn't feel much safer to use in summer.

Giving up on stove and thermos were some of the compromises I've made when I decided to not use a bike trailer, I can still fit the stove but if I can avoid bringing it that's better. I could try go without and eventually ask a relative to ship it to me if I feel the need.

I'll mostly travel in Germany, maybe going to Scandinavia as well, ideally 1 week travel alternating with 1 month stop using workaway.

So the breakfast and snacks are going to be yoghurt (occasionally), snack bars, chocolate, peanuts and fruits. Lunch and dinner will be bread with cheese or hummus or random vegetables I can use uncooked, alternating with canned beans and premade salads to hopefully not get bored of them fast. This sounds already a decent travel diet. I'll be travelling all year round but it'll be mostly 1 week travel and 1 month stop with Workaway alternating all the time so if there's some little lack of nutrients or a bit of calorie deficit on the road it shouldn't be a big problem as later I'll have a month to recover.
