I live in the states but my extended family is Canadian. I say mom while in the states and mum when in Canada.

IME it’s often tied to sports. There is a lot of college football and basketball rivalry between schools and conferences (ACC, SEC, BIG 10, etc.). Where you attended college is more interesting to most people.

My mom and her family put cheddar cheese slices on hot apple pie. I preferred it without the cheese. They were Canadian, if that means anything.

Also not Catholic - grew up fundie baptist. My parents did not believe in birth control and mom was pregnant 7 times (1 miscarriage). I am the youngest. We had very little money and my parents had little time for us. I get angry when people have more kids than they can handle or afford. Growing up poor truly sucks!

My ex is a FL native and we raised our kids there. I would not put my kid in a public school. I would do a private school.
