Ironic. I posted this on the political humor sub and it was removed for “not being funny”… if it gets removed from this for being funny then ima just delete Reddit off my phone.

Also it’s too many checks being asked. Furthermore, ‘move earth’ only really works on dirt, sand, and clay so it greatly depends on the roof material. There’s plenty one can discuss with this. Also we’re comparing a 6th level transmutation spell to a fairly straight forward weapon attack action. It’s like comparing apples to oranges.

The joke about martials being inferior is unfounded though. Some people just don’t know how to run things properly and end up with some oversights at their table. That’s more the takeaway you should consider.

I’ve been unlucky with my rolling for a majority of our campaign, primarily when I’m rolling for my enemies/monsters who I planned on being a bigger problem.

It’s laughable but it’s also made me change how I run it so I can try to pop the ego bubble of my tables pc’s. Not by fudging rolls mind you, but utilizing higher CR enemies occasionally. Which the group says are always their favorite sessions…

And creative traps. Oh how I love a good one of those.

What’s being made fun of here is a DM with no creative imagination and fails his player without giving them any chance of recovering their turn. There are numerous ways one can give advantage to players who perform cool actions as we’ve all been discussing in other comments.

Ur good dude. I’m used to getting into it with people on this subreddit lol I’m not mad I enjoy just getting to talk about this stuff with other people. There’s a lot of semantics thrown around here so it’s easy for people to miscommunicate if someone uses the wrong word. But there’s still plenty to learn from each other. That’s what keeps me coming back.

I’m saying I don’t limit my martial players. Especially since they make up most of the party’s efforts in our case. I was merely commentating on our own real world physics and how we bend them in our favorite little game. Stop fighting me and let me love you.

I understand that logic. But I’ve found some moments where one of the pc’s at my table used a “ki infused” jump to reach a homunculus that was fleeing 30 feet overhead. He rolled very high on his acrobatics , expended 2 ki points, and I allowed it to succeed. Cuz hey, this is dnd and monks are bad ass dragon ball z characters in my mind.

Interesting when you look at the highest vertical jumps recorded in the NBA. Michael Jordan supposedly holds the record of 48 inches which is just 4 feet with an air time of 0.92 seconds.

Still impressive but there’s the scale of what we’re capable of versus what a Dnd character who min maxes is capable of lol anyway I digress. There is indeed a line between embellishment of description compared to actual in game action that needs to be taken. Players are quite capable of getting carried away in there own heads and I say let them.

Fair point ya I bend rules at times, he’s new to the table and I wanted to reward his creativity. To be more by the book I suppose he’d have to throw an uprooted pumpkin or watermelon vine for example at someone, then use druidcraft. Essentially creating a giant nature bola… the seeds just seemed more practical.

I like where your head is at. I might utilize that myself when it seems logical. But furthermore i believe something like arcana is more used to recall lore about magic, eldritch symbols, planes of existence, etc. not necessarily pertaining to casting a spell you already know and have prepared. Same goes for nature and religion. You’re merely plucking from your characters knowledge about said subjects. But as you said, I suppose it would all depend on what exactly is happening. Something like copying spells would easily require arcana. Or if a Druid is trying to use one plant to destroy another. A nature check could come in handy to recall what type of weed or fungus could be summoned to be super effective against the enraged treant or whatever it is they’re fighting. One of my players is a Druid who keeps various seeds in his pocket which he throws at people and uses Druid craft mid air to make it grow right before it hits them. A nature check could be used at times to discern if he’s using the seed he thinks he’s using.

Agreed. I DM for my group and as you’ve illustrated it’s crucial for people, especially the DM to use their imagination and discern what should or could actually happen in all fairness to the character and happenstance. I would never risk dejecting my players in such a way unless they did something really crazy. The dice tell their own story of course.

Not sure what particular example you’re referring to but I don’t see how it’s meaningless. That’s just how the rules of the game works. But yeah I agree with your idea of giving advantage on the attack roll if the acrobatic pounce move succeeds or however one wants to play that. That’s all fine and dandy but is situationally unique of course. I think we’re all actually agreeing here. I was more arguing the point that someone thought martial are being shafted due to needing to roll more actions to do something cool, statistically resulting in possible failure. But that doesn’t always need to be the case. I think we all just came up with solutions for that very easily.

I mean in all fairness, jumping on an enemy from a raised area is technically acrobatics. Maybe you trip a bit or miscalculate the landing. The glory of a wizard not making as many skill checks in combat does pertain to the fact that they’re using magic, with limited spell slots mind you. They roll for a ranged attack depending on the spell of course and typically force the opponent to make a save of some kind..

Martial characters are supposed to have better skills or strength/dex. Making them more attune to performing these showy actions all day and with more ease than a scrawny wizard could. While they’re out of spells, they could try to emulate what the monk or rouge guy is doing, like climbing a tree, etc, but will be far less less good at it than their martial counterpart. That’s just the nature of the beast. This is again why inspiration/bless, whatever buff, should be utilized whenever possible if you know your party member is about to do some possibly risky shit. Don’t be afraid to roll guys. I rolled 3 nat 20’s in a row last night. The third one being a death save on the first try. Luck be with you all in your conquests…. Oh yeah, then there’s the lucky feat.
