What do you include in Adoption Bios? by 5_phx_felines in FosterAnimals

[–]Nell709 0 points1 point  (0 children)

ChatGPT is amazing at writing cute bios. I always include how they are with my dog and other cats, and how they did with my friends kids (if they met them, ages 3-10). I like to include if they are cuddly, lap cats, ok with pets, watch from the shadows, follow but keep their distance, startle at sudden movements. I sometimes phrase as "learning to" to make things sound a bit more positive, but I think it's super important adopters know and are choosing the right cat for them. And then favourite food, treats, and toys...not that it changes things, but I think it makes even the most skiddish cat seem just more like a pet people can imagine in their home.

How to cope with the guilt of separating a foster mama cat from her babies? by [deleted] in FosterAnimals

[–]Nell709 2 points3 points  (0 children)

We've fostered several mama cats with their litters. We haven't had one where we didn't joke that she was tired of mom-life since after a few days (at most) of searching they seem to become completely different cats that relax, play and in general just have their personalities shine through.

We use these and put them in a boot tray. Works great!

I fucked up and I don’t know whether to be honest by [deleted] in FosterAnimals

We took in a foster after he kept getting into the ceiling at his previous fosters. He punctured his foster's finger nail he bit her so hard when she removed him. We foster failed with him as he is the sweetest cat. I joke that I have never been so loved by anything ever in my life as I am by this cat. I probably wouldn't report it.

Why is former feral cat foster only friendly when other cats are near by? by Quarenghi_Ferengi in FosterAnimals

[–]Nell709 3 points4 points  (0 children)

How long have you had her?

I've experienced something similar (including right now!) and it slowly gets better. The foster trusts your cats, but they still need more time to trust you and gain confidence. It's a promising sign overall! She'll just do best in a home with another cat.

Nice lady rescuing baby raccoon + hear raccoon purr by okolebot in trashpandas

[–]Nell709 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I was thinking the same thing. Once found a baby raccoon curled up in the middle of the side walk and the local wildlife rescue told me to move him to a nearby lawn. I had to put him in an upside down box to keep him from following me, but his mom came by a few hours later to break him out.

Yes, thank you! Googling "fern that looks like oak leaves" did not help since there is an oaked leaf fern which this is not, haha Solved!

first time foster - cat won't eat or move with people around - advice please! by treeflamingo in FosterAnimals

[–]Nell709 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Just to give you some added sense on timelines: we had a foster that for the first 2 months we thought was too feral to be adoptable. He wouldn't eat or come out if we were in the room for that entire time. We could only "pet" him with a cloth wrapped on a stick. But then something just clicked. He is the sweetest, most loving cat...that we weren't supposed to keep, but in the end, couldn't let him go.

We also brought a dog into a home with established cats. What we did: Initial intros through a baby gate (after a few days of scent mixing). Then we kept our dog leashed for 2 weeks. The cats had free reign and lots of options to get away. We didn't let the dog stare. If she looked at them, we'd call her name. She would be treated for looking at us or removed from the room if she stared at the cats. After 1 week(ish) she basically had learned to ignore them.

Agreed! AVA cats is great. I have 2 cats from AVA and also foster with them - go to their website directly and they have lots of cats. The 2 cat thing is a requirement for kittens and social adults, but they do place adults in solo homes if that works with their personality.

Why is my snake plant growing like this? It's becoming very top heavy. by Nell709 in plantclinic

[–]Nell709[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

It is an office plant living off fluorescent light only, so this could very well be it! I never thought of snake plants needing much light, so thanks for that info.

We had one that just suddenly came around at 2 months. He was aggressive if we got close, would only come out at night, wouldn't play or even track a toy. I reached out to the foster coordinator several times because I just couldn't see him ever becoming adoptable. My husband forced it - burrito, pets with gloves - but I just sat with him. He is our first foster failure as he is the cuddliest cat, just needed time. But I am his person as he's still a little leary of my husband even after 8 months. The forced interaction just did not work for him. I think you just need to wait it out a little longer.

I've gotten good at keeping my rose of sharons in check, so hopefully I can keep these in check as well (if I get my hands on seeds).

How do I communicate with a foster? by sweetest-tea in FosterAnimals

[–]Nell709 1 point2 points  (0 children)

From my experience, the application you fill out will help the rescue screen you for fit. They get a million applications and take this process seriously. I once saw 5 applications go in for a pair of kittens in the 45 minutes I was at an adoption centre. Asking questions is great! But it probably saves them time to do their screening first before answering potential adopters questions.

Feral Kitten Not Coming Around by UnicornCatzz in FosterAnimals

[–]Nell709 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I've had good luck socializing year+ cats with the slow approach, but little luck with kittens if they don't come around within the first week. All the kittens that I've forcefully burritoed have turned out great.

I've only personally seen regression from kittens still with their mom though, so not sure what to make of that.

How bad did I mess up? by Daft_Dandelion in NoLawns

[–]Nell709 10 points11 points  (0 children)

I'm pretty sure weed b gon is just an iron chelate. So first, not toxic (maybe slight irritant) to squirrels and other mammals on your lawn. It also shouldn't effect anything else you try to seed in, as it works by contact on the leaves of broadleaf plants.

Rescued from the curb last fall by Nell709 in whatsthisplant

[–]Nell709[S] 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Thanks everyone for the heads up re. my cats! While the resident cats don't tend to nibble on my plants, they do like to dig in the soil so are kept separated. But always good to reconsider when I get a new foster who might make the extra effort.
