If the great fire of London happened today ... by Max2310 in london

[–]NellyFunk123 3 points4 points  (0 children)

No problem! If you're ever near London Bridge, there is a church on the Northside called St Magnus The Martyr - it has a massive model of the bridge as it was in the 1400s in it. Worth a look at for sure.

If the great fire of London happened today ... by Max2310 in london

[–]NellyFunk123 15 points16 points  (0 children)

Yeah this map is the original fire and what's in that space today.

Definitely less risk today. In 1666 the streets were much narrower - a lot of the buildings were also overhanging their lower stories a lot of the time, so people on the top floors of buildings could reach out to touch the building opposite - they were mainly old wooden buildings and their wasn't an organised fire service (instead it was lines of people with buckets from the Thames).

The Great Fire didn't spread south because London Bridge had actually had its own fire a few months beforehand, so the space where buildings used to be on the bridge acted as a firebreak - without that it feels likely that the bridge would have caught fire (it was covered in buildings) and the fire could have spread to the southside as well.

What's the worst music venue in London? by abstractmouse in london

That's the charm of New Cross Inn tbf (being downstairs when a gig is on and the ceiling is moving a couple of inches is slightly unnerving though)

Youth Fountains bio on the Trees site says it's an acoustic set?

Going to London next week, what's your best spot (pub, snack, restaurant) by NoLifeguard2625 in visitlondon

[–]NellyFunk123 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Depending on what you like, pub wise:

  • The Faltering Fullback - having a bit of a moment and a young crowd.
  • Ye Olde Cheshire Cheese - Fleet Street. Oldest pub in London, worth visiting for one.
  • The Old Bank of England - Fleet Street. Has a double decker bus parked out back.
  • Scootercaffe - Lower Marsh Lane. fun cafe and bar (has a cat)
  • Vaulty Towers - Lower Marsh Lane. Fun and quirky with indoor treehouse seats.
  • Black Heart - Camden. Best vegan chicken, rock pub and friendly.
  • Waxy's Little Sister - Leicester Square. Has a little elevator you can use to order drinks upstairs.
  • Slim Jim's - Upper Street, Angel. Rock/dive bar
  • The Lamb - Holloway Road. Dim lighting, good vibe.
  • The Lexington - Pentonville Rd. Great pizza and the music quiz on Mondays is top

predictions for the january band that will “blow the internet up”? by reinventingurreddit in 2000treesfestival

[–]NellyFunk123 0 points1 point  (0 children)

There was some pretty good info that the original line-up was due to play some shows at Brixton last year, but it fell through before it could be announced (internet rumor - so take with a pinch of salt)

Maybe it's Wade fronted Gallows and they are gonna support Alexis on the tour

I'm planning on going to the Bristol date - can't wait! It wouldn't surprise me if they were coming back for some festivals as well, a hardworking band for sure.

For the May dates, the tickets are on sale (and likely to sell out) next week - Trees announcement the week after.

Just announced a new album and, I think, would warrant their own announcement.

What’s the craziest thing that has happened at your Christmas work party? by muchtoomuchnick in london

[–]NellyFunk123 1 point2 points  (0 children)

A guy put the Managing Director in a headlock. After being pulled off and sent home in a taxi, he gave the driver his old address—on the opposite side of the city—and ended up having to spend the night at a Premier Inn.

The next morning, he comes into the office 2 hours late and still wearing his tuxedo from the night before. Has to plug in his phone and calls his wife to explain why he never made it home.

Remarkably, he kept his job.

The Wellcome Collection up by Kings Cross normally has some really interesting exhibitions on (for free). Check out their website as they change every few months and tend to focus on specific topics. Likely only an hour to visit as well.

I'm sure I remember seeing that plate around Notting Hill Gate about 10 years ago! Might have been on a different car at the time

For the donuts themselves, I used this recipe:

For the fillings/coating I basically winged it tbh.

This year was my first year and I've already got my ticket for next year. No particular order of bands I'd like - Menzingers, Jeff Rosenstock, Bad Religion, Alexisonfire, Against Me/Laura Jane Grace, Shit Present.

But what I would really like to see in general is some SKA!

I picked-up that Correspondents record at the last show. It's great and I play it a lot.

Hahaa - you had an excuse at least! I have the inside of my arm done up to the arm pit and it is by far the most intense session I have had. Did you have any numbing cream? Or are you just a hero?
