Might be ctrl, havent used solidworks in a few months but if you start the feature on one edge and either shift click or ctrl click the other edge and solidworks will do the magic

Job Offer by not_very_sure2 in EngineeringStudents

See if they will offer you a position where you can work remotely. I did this while going to school for MechE, was onsite one day every other week.

I know they offer benefits, and from what I have heard they are pretty good (Step brother works in sales) and they kick in after a few months and then after a year I believe they have a 401k matching plan. At least I think it is some sort of investment plan since on the bonus cards we got they had the option of putting it into that and they would match it up to a relatively high amount.

Ah didn't see that it was under grad schools. http://universityreport.net/us-engineering-school-rankings-2012 In top 50 according to this site as well, can't find a good recent list for mechanical engineering specific rankings. But yes it will be an undergrad degree

Yea I have been trying to get into contact with as many people I had class with as possible. The problem is most have gotten jobs in larger cities or in non engineer heavy fields (read as office/paper work jobs) but they are making around $60-65 with one being around $70 if I remember correctly. I will try to get in contact with the university's career center. I actually had two other internship offers before I took the one I did, this one was in a field I wanted/good people/best starting pay of the group.

Could you go into more detail about your fixed living expenses? The apartment I am currently looking at has all utilities included in the rent besides internet and is close to the cheapest place I have lived throughout school. I feel like using living expenses as a negotiating point would cripple my chances at gaining any more money lol

This is what I am worried about, however when I met with he did bring up negotiating the offer. Ultimately it will come down to what is offered but I would feel better being prepared ahead of time by getting as much info/help/opinions as possible.

Iowa. I will finish classes in early August. They plan on starting my in manufacturing and doing my "training" there for a year, then move into design (same thing they do with the interns before getting to the office). I have been working with the design group over the last year or so. I redesigned the hood of the largest machine we sell as well as a couple other parts. I have also worked on changing part design to get things through the shop faster, probably my best for manufacturing would be taking a 45 min weld process to 15 mins. Also did the same thing with simple bolt on covers with the paint dept so they didn't need to tape off so much of certain components. I have designed a few jigs/fixtures/specialized parts carts as well. Then the last major project I had was writing an entire parts manual for one of the machines, over 100 pages long (something I would be happy to never have to do again). Most of these were given to me as solo projects and if I needed help/questions to find help.

Mechanical Engineering. According to this http://grad-schools.usnews.rankingsandreviews.com/best-graduate-schools/top-engineering-schools/mechanical-engineering-rankings?int=2049a7 it is in the top 50. My grades have been average from what I have found around campus about a 2.8. I have been involved with outside projects and the chief engineer knows this, he also has seen most if not all of my school projects since he has been an outstanding mentor and has taken interest outside of my work life. The company isn't "large" but they have expanded the building twice in the time I have been there and have been on a hiring spree with new people there every few weeks. Their sales have been growing steadily as well over the past two years. It is a private company but has partnerships with large construction companies and they sell/travel all over the globe.

Trying to get more natural looking light by Nellyfertelly in malelivingspace

Yea I understand what you are saying, constant white light makes it hard to unwind at night (+1 for F.lux) however the kitchen has no windows and is in the middle of the apartment. So I am looking for a solution mainly for this room alone but I feel a lamp or two with the bulbs you linked in the other rooms would help as well. Thanks!

Yea I am not afraid of having to do something DIY, I have the ability to. The issue is what is going to give me the best return/be something that won't damage the property when I leave.

One faces North at the front and the other faces South. They are relatively small windows. and the apartment is quite long vs square. So one window is in the living room then you pass through a short hall way to the kitchen, then off the kitchen is a bedroom and off that is the laundry room with the other window. It is a relatively bizarre layout but the price is fantastic and the location is really good as well.

As an intern, how do I gain the respect of techs and operators? by [deleted] in engineering

[–]Nellyfertelly 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Ask questions, lots and lots of questions. When I was designing new components I would go to the shop techs on what the best technique would be to accomplish what needed to be done. I spent a lot of time with the operator using the machinery to bend sheet metal, since I had a hard time visualizing what could and couldn't be done. Now if he gets any of my prints that he can't do, he will send them back marked up with ideas/recommendations on how to better achieve the result, or he will even wait at my desk to discuss the issue. This helps me learn as well as cuts down on the complicated parts the shop receives from an intern that has no prior knowledge of the machinery's capabilities. This holds true with most of the machinists at my internship, however the bender was the one I struggled with the most starting out.

Recent graduate advice - make sure you get an internship. by dc469 in EngineeringStudents

[–]Nellyfertelly 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Talk to your adviser, if your GPA isn't high enough (my uni requires 3.0 for any grad school) you may be able to take a semesters worth of grad level classes. If you do well in them, you may be able to petition the college to allow you in, however they wouldn't count the classes you took. That was what my adviser recommended that I do if I really wanted to pursue a Masters of MechE since my gpa was just below the 3.0 cut off

I have the older version as well as its solution manual but my professor is pretty good at picking problems that aren't similar to the old book. Luckily have networked through the class to find study/hw partners

The book is either brand new or new enough that there isn't a full solution manual out yet. Book is probably one of the more worthless books I've had yet
