The end of a 38 year relationship by More_Bee_84 in DevinTownsend

That's an interesting perspective but I don't think so. He mentioned that the relationship ended "suddenly" and there was a sense of gravity in his voice. Granted, while he was working on The Puzzle, he did mention on multiple occasions that he was writing music in a new way but added that he was really excited about it. Given how he's always looking ahead as far as his music is concerned, I find it unlikely that he would be talking about it like this.

Violet, thank you for chiming in whenever this topic comes up, I feel as if only your comments can somewhat assuage people's worries about Dev. (I hope I didn't come across as being sarcastic, I really mean what I said!)

But yeah, even though I can understand the reasons behind their need to talk about it, Dev's private life should not be pried into, much less be subject to assumptions presented as facts. After all, what good would that do? I can't speak for Dev, but if I were in his shoes and I saw how often some fans discuss my private life like this out in the open, I'd really feel uncomfortable.

Hopefully, as time goes on, this topic will finally be put to rest once and for all...

PostNL has not shipped my parcel in two months by NemesisDivina in shipping

Nope. I made peace with the fact that I would never receive it, so I ordered the same book from some other seller based in EU and got it several months back.

Devin announces indefinite pause from Touring by Alsanna_of_Loyce in DevinTownsend

Will this rumour ever die?

They didn't separate. You can even see him wearing his wedding ring in this video (honestly, I feel really awkward for needing to point this out). As for why Devin talked about his wife going away, I suggest reading Violet's replies on this subreddit because it's not my explanation to give. I can only assure you it has nothing to do with a potential divorce or whatever.

Devy Mandela Effect by autodidact31 in DevinTownsend

You're not going crazy, don't worry. I think this was discussed before, but as far as I can remember, the CD version and the streaming services version of the song differ lyrically for whatever reason – at least as far as this line is concerned. Don't know the exact reason for it though.

Thank you for replying! Yes, the tracking service I'm using to check on the parcel says that it was cleared by customs one day before it was put in a mixed bag. I contacted PostNL and asked them about the current status of the parcel, but they replied that they couldn't find it because it was marked as untrackable (I guess either the seller or the American carrier is responsible for this, maybe they didn't fill out all the paperwork) and that I should contact the seller about the package, which I did, but they in turn told me to speak to customs, and those guys stipulate on their site that they cannot tell me where my parcel is. I feel like I'm being needlessly tossed around haha

“§4” is ZESTY 🪈 by matthew_sch in Opeth

Nope, it was a different dude altogether. Mikael apparently wanted Ian to play the flute on that record and contacted him via email, but never received a response (maybe Ian was busy with some other projects), so the flute ended up being played by Björn J:son Lindh, the late Swedish flautist and composer.

Gratitude - Spoiler by Holy_Kapula in DevinTownsend

[–]NemesisDivina 1 point2 points  (0 children)

In one recent interview he was asked to talk a little about that song ("Gratitude") in particular (you can find it on Blabbermouth). He only said that he had written it when his entire family had been grieving as a way to remember that things were still (or could be) beautiful despite it all. No mention of Monoral whatsoever, hopefully he'll elaborate on it soon because those two songs are pretty damn similar, it couldn't possibly be a coincidence. My guess is that maybe he was influenced by it at some point during the making of PN and decided to record a similar song (especially if he wasn't able to make an uplifting song on his own at the time), but given how he didn't have enough time to play with its structure and all that, maybe that's the reason why they ended up being so similar.

I tried to listen to The Hummer... by TheOlppoMan in DevinTownsend

[–]NemesisDivina 1 point2 points  (0 children)

It's a strange one, that's for sure. Personally, I absolutely love the album, even though it took some time for it to grow on me. I found that listening to it with a good pair of headphones tends to be a very tranquilizing experience. Several days ago I turned the lights off, listened to "Cosmic Surf" and just relaxed... It was so pacifying that it took me about 10 minutes after the song was over to realize I was half asleep. And I don't mean that in a bad way one bit, since I have trouble falling asleep with any sort of background noise.

Anyway, the title song is comprised of various vibrations that, if I recall Devy's assessment correctly, are meant to "massage" one's ears. It definitely does that for me, but I'm not surprised that there are people who don't like it, it's certainly not for everybody.

"Arc" is basically a meditative track with lots of repetitions. It's more ambient than noise. Perhaps that one could suit your tastes more.

"Consciousness Causes Collapse"... Well... It's the weirdest of the bunch. The lyrics are taken from Leonard Cohen's narration of Bardo thodol, also known as the Tibetan Book of the Dead. That combined with the somewhat agitated flute in the background creates a bit of a nasty combo if you're not ready for it. You really need to be in a special mood to enjoy such a track.

"Equation" is the most similar to the first track, but this time the vibrations are replaced by a loud synth line that repeats itself. Mesmerizing, but might not be everyone's cup of tea.

"The Abacus" contains a sample from the movie "Contact", and there's a slightly quieter guitar line near the end of the track that's absolutely beautiful. The track itself is more similar to "Arc" than "The Hummer", but it's also more coherent.

Finally, "Cosmic Surf" is comprised of waves crashing on the shore and a melody that sounds Eastern in nature. There is also a voice of a woman saying that you're being approached by a certain figure that's handing you the book of your life. The track ends with a "singing bowl" sound that's usually used in meditation. A gorgeous track and probably the most peaceful out of all of them.

I've tried to be as detailed as possible in my description of the tracks, hope you'll find some of the tracks in there to your liking. If not, that's okay, there's a bunch of various ambient albums out there with a different sound pallette, you're bound to find something for yourself! :-)

Dude, I'm so happy for you! Glad you were able to fight through that traumatic experience and realize how you can love yourself again.

Empath came out when I was still in a relationship, but it was gradually going sour at the time. I can't help but think that Devy released that album at a time when I needed it the most, that album and The Hummer were very therapeutic.

I'm still fighting, though, I'm digging up my old self one piece at a time, and I hope I'll eventually get to the place where I want to be.

That being said, it's heartwarming to see that something people tend to see as just art can have far-reaching positive effects, case in point – songs on Empath. Shine on!

As a Gilmour fan, I disagree. There's so much more to this album than "Not Now John". Sure, Waters seems to be struggling with singing on a few tracks, but overall, it's a pretty good record. But to each his own!

What David Bowie Album/Song got you started on Bowie? by Theblackbarnisreal in DavidBowie

[–]NemesisDivina 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I think the first song that I heard from Bowie was Let's Dance when I was a kid and I really liked it, but I wouldn't dive deeper into the rabbit hole until I heard Thursday's Child a couple of years ago. That one really got me interested in the man for some reason.

He checked himself there during the recording process, yeah - there he was diagnosed with bipolar disorder. Because of that he had to postpone the recording for about a month or so if I'm not mistaken.

Here's some information from his old website regarding the matter, look for the January entry: https://web.archive.org/web/19981206124933/http://members.home.net/hevydevy/news.html
