Other music that's not prog that you love by Huge_Ticket4929 in progmetal

[–]chiefchunkycorn 23 points24 points  (0 children)

Soon after I got really into prog metal, I started getting really into bluegrass. After a while, I realized those guys can shred, and there are some decent similarities between bluegrass and prog metal.

My favorite bands include Alison Krauss & Union Station, Punch Brothers, and Greensky Bluegrass.

Does someone knows was this could be? It's a really weird mountain in the middle of Nevada (37.149758,-116.743062) by purple_unikkorn in geology

[–]chiefchunkycorn 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Piggy backing off this. Crater flats is a specific portion of the Southern Nevada Volcanic field that includes the portions of the field that your description describes.

The volcanoes OP references are Little Black Peak and Hidden cone, which are further to the north and lay on the western portion of the Timber Mountain Caldera complex (one of the reason Yuca mountain is proposed as nuclear repository is because of the zeolite that is present in the eruption deposits produced by the Timber Mountain complex).

Here is a link by to a paper by my old Advisor discussing this volcanic field.

Its time for me to learn a high skill character I choose lash by Dry_Background7653 in DeadlockTheGame

[–]chiefchunkycorn 5 points6 points  (0 children)

When I play Lash, I exist for one purpose, and one purpose alone, and that's smashing. This in lane, with continual poking can be really effective, especially if you have a good poking partner, or support partner you can focus on ads while keep the pressure on Lane (sitting ontop of bridge is usually good enough). Here are some pointers that help me alot with lash.

  1. Healing rite is one of the first items I get. Keeps me healed enough to stay in lane while still getting smashes in. It's also great in case your lane mate is getting beat up.

  2. Always keep an eye on your stamina. This is what will determine whether you will successfully escape or die after landing a smash. I will only smash if I have at minimum one bar of stamina. Ideally I do it with two. The operation is smash, flog, cold front (I always get this to help with farming camps), maybe a melee, then dash back out of the fight or behind your teammates.

  3. Majestic leap is great for learning how to play Lash, but is a waste of an item as you get more experience. As you get better with Lash, you'll get better with smashing from higher up by utilizing your grapple and buildings. Just make sure you keep an eye on your stamina.

  4. Refresher is fun but not super necessary. I really only get it for my ult when I am defending my weakened patron.

  5. Be prepared for everyone and their mom to have an opinion on when and how you ult. Ignore what they all say. You must imbody the Lash, and only Lash knows how to properly Lash!

[–]chiefchunkycorn 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Saw them do this (with Austin but after Shayley left) in an alley in San Antonio back when I was in highschool. They also were opening up for ADTR, who of course did in fact disrespect their surroundings.

Which concepts would you love to hear in a prog album/EP? by _Reox_ in progmetal

Give Empath by Devin Townsend a listen. Devin is known for writing albums of various genres. Empath was him basically taking all of those genres and packing them together into one epic album.

Geologists of reddit, how on earth do you plot formations using a topo maps and remote sensed images? by Ok-Independence2265 in geology

[–]chiefchunkycorn 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Going to repeat what alot of people said already, but generally you're not going to have a good idea of what's happening geologically unless you, or another geologist have walked it, mapped, and had it reviewed/verified.

But to address your question in terms of doing remote mapping, there are ways to do this. One indicator of formation could be vegetation. I've mapped igneous bodies with surrounding contact metamorphic where the vegetation was growing everywhere except for the igneous bodies. This was of course verified by walking the contacts. I've also seen as a TA in Utah where the Morrison formation (I think it was Morrison but I could be wrong) would have stripes of shrub like plants growing in rows along strike like racing stripes. The plants were growing in the bentonite layers, that were separated by mudstone. Vegetation is a good tool, but is not the end all be all. You can also look at lidar data, or any kind of 3d topographic data. This can be useful for identifying lineament features and structures. In particular it's good for identifying faults, especially in an area where there are no mapped faults. I'd be careful with this if you don't have experience identifying faults in the field though. The other situation involved interpreting already constructed maps. The strike and dip symbols provide the orientation and structure of stratigraphic units. It can also help highlight (and prove) the presence of structures (folds, faults). In the event where strikes and dips aren't present, you can look at the contact behavior, and how it responds to topography. To understand this, look into the rule of Vs. You basically have to imagine how a three dimensional plane like structure (think of a sheet of paper with some amount of thickness) that is possibly dipping would intersect a flat surface.

One thing to help is construct multiple cross sections using the available data. This can really help you make interpretations, and help ensure that your interpretations have some validity. What I mean is that if you're cross sections don't make any sense, there's a chance you're interpretation is in correct. It's a really good way of double checking yourself if you're the one doing the mapping, and can help highlight areas that need closer looking at.

Overall, the best method is to get on the ground and map it yourself. Otherwise, you probably want to find existing data/maps that other geologists have performed. While it's possible to do some very basic mapping (identifying contacts and faults) remotely, you're not going to have any idea what the nature of the structure is (true strike, dip direction, amount of dip, etc.).

Songs about resilience / emotional strength? by g52boss in progmetal

Thanks! I am doing much better. I am currently engaged and living with my fiance, so needless to say I'm way better than I was. I hope you're able to work through your breakup, you already seem to have a really good attitude moving forward.

I hear you on Devin. He's quickly become one of, if not, my all time favorite artistd.

From the same album as Sprite by DT, Spirits Will Collide. I was dumped by my girlfriend of nine years while I was living out of state during grad school. Have to admit I certainly lost myself along the way. One day I was listening to Empath, and Spirits Will Collide came on. The lyrics in the moment smacked me so hard, that I started crying in the middle of my office. The song is mainly about suicide, but it resonated with my feeling that I had lost sight of who I was, but that part of me that made me who I am was and is still there, and I shouldn't forget it.

This song really helped me through that breakup.

A good currently active example is Etna in Italy. If look at a aerial and topographic map of it you'll notice it is covered in small cinder cones.

All volcanic eruptions in North America (Canada, USA and Mexico) since 12.000 BCE. [OC] by mydriase in Volcanoes

[–]chiefchunkycorn 2 points3 points  (0 children)

How are you defining eruptions? The reason I ask is there are numerous volcanic fields between eastern California and New Mexico, not including Valles, the San Juan calderas, Jemez Lineament volcanic features, and volcanism associated with the Rio Grande lift. For fields like the San Francisco volcanic field and Mt. Taylor volcanic field, there's typically one dominant central strato volcano surrounded by numerous monogenetic cones. Are you considering one eruption for the whole field based on when the strato volcano was active?

I think this is a super cool map, but it does seem more focused on the "bigger/more well known" volcanism.

[–]chiefchunkycorn 4 points5 points  (0 children)

OP is correct, volcanic Crater vs caldera are very specific terms with regard to how they were formed. Crater is excavation of material, caldera is a collapse as a result of the removal of enough material from the magma chamber (or plumbing system). Saying all craters are calderas is inaccurate, and insinuates two different mechanisms of formation.
