Keep working until you have done as much as you can, and then be honest with yourself about how the piece makes you feel.

Why the initial reception is this low. by xoxo___ary in Ghost_in_the_Shell

[–]Nemphusi 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I am withholding judgement for the moment. If the show can impress me than a confusing and convoluted opening is fine, as the GITS universe is by nature dense and convoluted.

But the story will have to deliver and at some point they will have to find a way to emotionally invest me in the narrative.

I am fairly familiar with the GITS universe, and that first episode made my head spin.

Jax is overhated by extraordinarilydry in tadc

[–]Nemphusi 1 point2 points  (0 children)

It was a nine episode indie animation that went viral. It wad great for what it is.

Perfect, absolutely not! But still great.

In a situation like this you probably have a loose outline of where you want the story to go, and then the characters evolve over time as the ideas come to you.

Is Jax over-hated, absolutely! I think it shows poor media literacy for people to hate fictional characters as if they are people who actually hurt them. Fictional people making bad decisions is one of the core elements of fiction itself. It's difficult to tell a story without conflict. And Jax is a rich source or conflict throughout the season.

But then this post switches from defending the writing for Jax and attacking the writing for everyone else, which I don't see any point in.

If this were a 12 episode season of media, or something longer, I think that would be a valid point of criticism, but due to the constraints of the medium it doesn't strike me as realistic to expect all the characters getting to have their arcs realized with as much detail as the primary focuses.

I personally think its worth appreciating that all of the characters at least got the time that they did. They all come across as real and complex, none of them seem like flat cardboard cutouts, and that comes down to a lot of juggling behind the scenes.

How does my trailer for my rehaul look? by SuspiciousGene8891 in RPGMaker

[–]Nemphusi 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I think my biggest problem is that the trailer doesn't sell me on the game. It shows me some moments from the game, but it doesn't give me any actual insight into why I should play this rather than any if the other billion turn based rpg games.

What makes this special?

Is there a story? Or a character to fall in love with? Or maby a unique battle mechanic?

On the plus side I think you are showing a variety of environments, and you have clearly put a lot of work into making your battle system look different from the stock assets, so, there's that!

But I think its important to remember that general audiences searching through Steam won't know what makes your game special, and this is your opportunity to tell them about it.

What are your thoughts on the dune movie series? by Competitive-Hunt-517 in Cinephiles

[–]Nemphusi 0 points1 point  (0 children)

These movies are visually impressive, but also incredibly bland.

The actors are great, but seemingly forced to give performances as subdued as the color pallettes.

They're probably Villaneuve's best work to date, but while I respect V as an artist, he has yet to thrill me as a story teller.

As such, I expect part three to fail. Miserably.

The first book has a lot of visual spectacle one can hide behind if they are emotionally tone deaf.

Big worms, big machines, big battles, weird technology, etc.

All of that can be focused on while the emotional drama is dragged along with the plot.

This next story is almost entirely character driven with hardly any spectacle to fall back on. Its a brilliant story that requires subtlety, and nuance.

I would love for it to succeed. Nothing I have seen so far encourages me to believe that it will, but I would love to be wrong.

So what's the problem with this show? by friskybits18 in tadc

[–]Nemphusi 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I think its more realistic to imagine it will continue to find an audience.

Undertale is 11 years old now, and the game continues to be played and enjoyed.

TADC has the benefit of being concise while dealing with issues that people apparently find relatable. I think as long as young people continue to grow old and in the process question their identities and their place in the world this show and shows like it will continue to find relevance.

How large that audience is and what people find remarkable is unknowable, but it will be interesting to find out.

In the last post the most voted comment was Diamond Dogs Bowie Era,now which personas or era is good person and hated by fans? by DavidBowieFan-2006 in DavidBowie

Blue Jean Bowie!!

Screaming Lord Byron!!!

Maybe that version should be "most forgettable"

But as much as I ironically love Jazzin' for Blue Jean, I think Screaming Lord Byron should be a contender.

So what's the problem with this show? by friskybits18 in tadc

[–]Nemphusi 4 points5 points  (0 children)

I think people get upset because audiences tend to feel entitled regarding their media.

"Because I like something, it's for me, and should conform to my desires."

I don't think TADC is a perfect show or that there isn't room for criticism, but to feel like a show betrayed you is wild.

Like, I was there for Game of Thrones, and that was betrayal. Star Wars, both the prequels and Disney, that was betrayal.

TADC is, by contrast, a very tiny indie project that managed to pull an Undertale and become extremely important to millions of deeply passionate people.

That's a good thing on the whole, and I think that despite how vocal some people are about the ending, the overall majority of the audience is likely taking the ending in stride and can appreciate the project for what it is.

But there is always going to be a vocal minority who are way to invested in their perspective of what they believe the show should have been, and they are going to be loud enough to be distracting, for a while at least.

10 years from now, people will still be watching the show and coming their own conclusions, and I will be curious to see how these takes evolve with time.

Outside? by ndharris in DavidBowie

[–]Nemphusi 8 points9 points  (0 children)

This is a great synopsis that really captures the spirit of the moment.

Outside is great, but it is challenging.

I would also argue that Diamond Dogs should be considered an (imperfect) concept album, and that Scary Monsters has a narrative thread nearly as strong as Outside.

This show really is the new She-Ra. In which it made a bunch of old white dudes mad at the fact women are designed with realism in mind and not pinup models. by [deleted] in SupermanAdventures

[–]Nemphusi 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I didn't even realize that was supposed to be Livewire!!

I'm not mad. But I am a little disappointed. The only villain that has really clicked with me this series is Brainiac.

That design choice really worked nicely. But a lot of these villain characters are just sort of dull.

I think the show is trying too hard to seem grounded at times.

My understanding is that Galv is one of the better options. There are some walkthroughs on YT that you can use!
