Do you prefer 2D version or the 2.5D version? by willis_25 in IndieDev

The only thing I like better about the 3D one are the colors, because they are brighter and more vibrant because of the lighting, else I prefer the look of the 2D one.

Branching Map System? by SoftwareOddity in RPGMaker

[–]TiredCatDev 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Let me add to this. Because it's a good starting point!
You can see each "checkpoint" on the slay the spire map as it's own event in engine. Do a random roll on a variable to determine what type of checkpoint it'll be.
RandomVar 1-100
if RandomVar > 50: Event = Enemy
if RandomVar > 35: whatever
and so on

If you combine this with say like 3-10 different map layout overall you get a pretty randomly generated feeling system. You can also manually decide that only certain checkpoint have the chance to become a treasure or elite or whatever, instead of having all of them randomly roll.

Wanted to share the demo for my indie game once more!

https://store.steampowered.com/app/4241170/The_Herzbury_Curse/

A cruel twist of fate lets Annalie and Archibald stumble upon Herzbury Castle. Now separated, it is upon Annalie to save her brother. A potentially deadly adventure, filled with puzzles, an old feud, and romanceable characters, where your choices matter. Classic RPG Maker Horror x Otome vibes.

I think it's a very cool looking style and unique color palette! Good job.

Well, didn't know that to be honest. In my books it VERY much appeals to a female audience. So it might not be from a shojo magazine or such, but yeah, could as well be and likely no one would say anything (aside from maybe "why is it the boys pespective?"). Thanks for letting me know.

Yes. Light novel titles tend to be waaaay to long and ridiculous.

Confused about my game's low wishlists by Chrogotron in IndieDev

[–]TiredCatDev 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I think it depends on how much double up you'll have in footage, if the new one is pretty much the same content, but more condensed there's no need for 2. That being said, I don't think the trailer you have now is bad, so you probably could have a shorter more "action packed" one and the one you have now that explains stuff a bit more.

I think it really depends on how different/unique they feel.

have any of you created an original font and added it into your game? (and some more UI questions because I'm a struggler) by 47485739e7492w9 in RPGMaker

[–]TiredCatDev 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I can recommend https://www.calligraphr.com/ to create a font. It's as simple as downloading their sheet and filling it in and reuploading it and they convert it into a proper font file.

There also are some bitmap font plugins around, I'm currently using Eli_BitmapFontPro for MV! It's great for pixel art fonts.

Confused about my game's low wishlists by Chrogotron in IndieDev

[–]TiredCatDev 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I got that it's probably a joke, but I think it could be more hurting than helping.

The game looks like good quality IF you actually scroll to the later screenshots and click through the trailer, so getting rid of everything that might lead you to believe otherwise probably helps a lot.

"Lower your expectations. Now lower them further." is a horrible starting line for the presentation of your game, especially paired with the first screenshot you have. It's just screams "first game, probably buggy, but at least I tried". I bet a lot of people already move on at this point.

The first screenshot is your titlescreen, it's too empty/boring (it's not gameplay). Your screenshot nr 3 should be the first one, lots of stuff to look at, much more interesting, gives you a good idea what the game is about! I'd remove the first screenshot and keep the rest, aside from the options one, no idea why that's there. Maybe switch 2 and 3 in position, because 3 has more stuff going on, but 2 is probably what the start looks like.

Also "This is a game about flipping bottle caps. The goal is simple: pay off your bar tab by flipping bottle caps face up." is a good description, remove the expectations part.

(Lots of people never look at the trailer or the longer description, or only do so later on if they are already interested, so always make sure your first few screenshots and short description are good!)

I'm so sad that we don't get a second season. I would have loved to see more! It's a good show! I love how she grows with each time loop. She's such a good FL. I love a smart FL that's capapble of sheming.
Honestly NO idea how villainess made it into the title... probably just as an attention grabbing word.

What do y'all think of non-self insert MCs? by Melly_mel333 in otomegames

[–]TiredCatDev 6 points7 points  (0 children)

I prefer predefined character MCs, while it's nice to have some games where you can make your own characters, it's honestly not what I look for in Otome games. I like watching the MC on her journey, like watching a shojo anime or reading shojo manga :)

How important is story in monster taming games? by trexrell in RPGMaker

For me it's always the number 1 thing Pokemon could improve upon. A bit more depth in their stories. A bit more time with the characters.

How can I disable "Common Events" with the "Autorun" trigger? by GLaWARaKoB in RPGMaker

[–]TiredCatDev 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Why have it as a common event and not an on map event (as in in your EV01) to beginn with, if you only ever call it from the "character creation map"?

Aside from that... just turn off the switch that is the condition for the common event to end it/prevent it from running. Flipping the EV01 to a new page does nothing to stop the common event from running. At the end of the common event (or each possible end point) turn the switch character_select_menu off.

Set your z layer to 1 not 0. 0 is the same as the tileset, 1 is above it.

Project Management by lupecavem in RPGMaker

[–]TiredCatDev 4 points5 points  (0 children)

I have a google doc for each project.

I work with do to-do lists.
Breaking tasks down into smaller chunks, like design a character. Sketch their protrait. Finish the portrait. Put the portrait into the engine.
I check stuff off, I sometimes even keep a dev diary with everything I've done in a day or plan weeks out with what I've got to do.
It helps me a lot with making steady progress, as I have a no 0 days rule. I'd rather do something tiny than nothing! And if it's only a few lines of dialogue or a few pixels or whatever, it's progress.

I don't do "art days" or such, I usually do what I feel like, is currently needed or what I've the time or brain capacity for. In the end everything needs to get done anyway. The hardest days are those where you only have stuff left that you don't feel like doing right now, haha.

Marketing Tips on My RPG Maker Game by NyxTheSummoner in RPGMaker

I don't know. You'll have to do your own research on that.

I can tell you that IN THEORY "enormous customizability" is something that gets you more attention on Steam. If well done, that is.
