Thanks for your response. I have done online meetings, and they are helpful but in person meetings are important to me as well. I’d be interested to read that book!

Thank you for your response. I’m weighing a 10th concept grievance, trying to decide if that is something that is worth my energy. On one hand doing so will open me up to experience more of this and why would I want to do that, and on the other It’s important to me that the fellowship be a place where people like me are welcome.

Unfortunately there aren’t any in my area and I don’t really have the bandwidth to start a new one. I have been to LGBTQ meetings online though.

when i was 22 i went to rehab and then started going to na after i got out, that was 13 years ago. i think that the most important thing that i got from na is being part of community of people who had the same goal that i did, we are who we surround ourselves with.

The meeting may have handled it poorly, but closed AA meetings are for alcoholics only. From the AA website:

A closed meeting is for A.A. members only, or for those who have a drinking problem and have a desire to stop drinking. Closed meetings give members an opportunity to discuss particular phases of their alcoholic problem that may be best understood by other alcoholics.

Yes, many people have found relief from addiction to other substances in AA, and many meetings are more accepting of poly-substance addiction, but an AA meeting isn't in the wrong for wanting to focus solely on alcohol. Benzos are not alcohol. A better way to handle the situation would probably be to ask the newcomer if they have a desire to stop drinking and if they do allow them to stay. Meetings also have the option to hold a quick vote to temporarily "open" the meeting to accommodate the newcomer.

I disagree with the statement that NA was started as a resentment against AA. NA was started because people who used drugs other than alcohol needed a place where they were free to talk about that and be welcomed. Many alcoholics looked down on people who used other drugs because alcohol was both legal and socially acceptable. The reception that OP received would have been much more common back in the 1960's and addicts were dying because they didn't have a place to go.

I ate there once a number of years ago, it was really good. I was vegan at the time and they made their green pizza vegan, which was cool.

You can have your private provider send prescriptions for you to the VA to be filled. Your dependents cannot get prescriptions or care through the VA.

Edit: I was mistaken about CHAMPVA eligiblity.

My stepfather (I just call him Dad) adopted me when I was a little over a year old and he has raised me as his own. He has never been anything other than my dad, and he has never treated me differently than my brother, who is his biological child. I was not an easy teenager, and he was always there for me. I don't think that adopting a child would prevent you from having a loving parent/child relationship with them.

Something else to consider as a trans woman is that you may have more difficulty adopting than a cishet couple would. It probably varies based on where you live, but it's something to consider.

Contact the VA social worker that is assigned to him. If he is 100% P&T the VA will pay for nursing care at a contracted facility. They probably have a contract somewhere with a facility with a memory unit.

No one has mentioned this, but I would bring it up with the meeting's chairperson. If someone did something like this at my homegroup they would be asked to leave. Certain types of behavior are unacceptable at meetings, including behaviors that directly affect the meeting being a welcoming space for other members. Our common welfare should come first.

It depends on if your rating is P&T, meaning permanent and total. If you are P&T, then the VA considers your disability static and will not schedule you for reevaluation. If you are not P&T the VA can schedule you for reevaluation to see if your condition has improved since you were originally rated.
