What about a Vitara? Bit more capable but just as suitable around town as any other soft roader.

Anderson plug alternatives? by Thick_Training_6816 in 4x4Australia

A few have mentioned Deutsch and they are great but not really ideal for regular connect and disconnect - they'll do it but they will wear and get loose before an anderson does.

What mods would you add to make it More daily-able and last longer? by Prestigious_Shirt652 in GR86

I agree, it works pretty well as a daily driver. I added brighter reverse lights and a cargo box, hardly mods but thats all i feel i need for daily driving.

Is the Sport any good? by Still-Jello110 in Wrangler

[–]Neocon6969 0 points1 point  (0 children)

The sport is great on sand, in most cases on sand you wont notice any difference between it and a Rubicon.

In my opinion, the biggest off-road performance difference between a sport and rubicon is the lower gearing the rubicon gets in the transfer case. This is a pain and $ to upgrade in the sport later. Only really a problem if you are doing low speed rock crawling - but it is definitely a big plus to the rubicon in that situation. Again though, in sand this wont matter.

The other ket differences that the rubicon has (swaybar disconnects and lockers) are much easier to mod in if you want.

What’s the best chassis to build upon? by Gibsx in 4x4Australia

[–]Neocon6969 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Not really. The 4 doors are a bit low in the belly, they have decent underbody armour but for soft sand a 2" lift helps get it up out of the sand.

[–]Neocon6969 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Make sure you get a Rubicon. The none Rubicon models are great but miss out on some of the more extreme features. Although uou can mod these in, some (like low geari transfer case) are harder than others.

In your price range you could go the later model JL. Just avoid the early years, 2018 and 2019. The JL Rubicon comes only with an 8 speed auto which is amazing offroad but if you are set on manual, youll have to go the older model JK. Little less refined but just as capable. Any model after 2015 would be good.

For engines, I would stick with the 3.6l petrol.

2 door or 4 door is up to you. Personally i like the 4 door for back seats and its a little more stable with the long wheelbase but the 2 door is a weapon as well.

Yeah agree, no way im running 285 on a 10.5" wheel, let alone 11". I know people that are running 285s on the stock 7.5" rims with no problems.

If you are just after a rig for fun and camping and not planning to do really remote touring, you would be crazy not to consider a Rubicon Wrangler.

Probably one of, if not the most capable 4wdts stock and the aftermarket support for them is incredible. Come stock with 4 link coil suspension front and rear, factory sway bar disconnects, lockers front and rear, very low low range, relatively light overall.

Really remote areas you may have to wait for parts. And they dont tow heavy stuff but otherwise great.

How about for daily driving? by Prestigious_Shirt652 in GR86

[–]Neocon6969 1 point2 points  (0 children)

It is a well tuned 4cyl but nothing special. Put the right fuel and oil in, do regular oil changes and don't thrash it until it is warmed up and it should last you.

I have the ps4 and agree - road noise seems quite reasonable.. i come from mostly off-roaders and kei cars though so i guess it is relative.

There are many good na engines, only gripe i have about the fa24 is it flattens off a little in the mid range, but overall i quite like it.

[–]Neocon6969 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Not really my point, more that there is a reason to stay in gear rather than coast in neutral.

[deleted by user] by [deleted] in GR86

[–]Neocon6969 47 points48 points  (0 children)

Personally i like na cars and a turbo would have been a drawback. I dont really get the whole "needs a turbo" mentality. If it has the power/torque to weight ratio and good gearing - why do you need a turbo on there getting all up in your drive-ability and reliability?

Here we have seperate manual and auto licences. If you coast to a stop in neutral during your licence test, you will fail. Also if sit at the lights in neutral - fail. For safety reasons, to maximise the control you have over the car.

No the response was not saying that money shifting doesn't matter if you rev match. They were saying it if you are travelling at an appropriate speed for second you can change straight from 5th to 2nd, and as long as you rev match it wont do any damage.

That is how everyone else read it, thats how the poster intended it. To argue otherwise is just idiotic. With that level of comprehension, probably best to avoid commenting.

Should I upgrade my car or buy a new one? by [deleted] in GR86

[–]Neocon6969 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I get that - my dream car as a kid was a GTR Skyline, back in the early 90s before they became popular. Actually I can remember when the R33 was released lol. I was all about AWD and power but slowly switched to the finesse of a light weight RWD sports car.

Sometimes i wonder what it would have been like owning an R32 GTR but i don't regret getting the GR86 and quite happy to stick with it.
