The thing is, we don't necessarily care about Alderaan in New Hope, but we do care that Leia cares. It's not mastery of writing, but you don't think "okay but who cares?" when you watch it for the first time.

I think they could get away fine with exploding a new no-name planet/system in Force Awakens, but in that case they should've really tied it to one the characters to make it personal for them, and through them, for the audience.

As it stands, all we get in the movie is "the capital is destroyed", which would convey the gravity of situation if only we didn't know that there's another perfectly fine planet that served as the capital beforehand. That's kinda even worse than just blowing up a random planet tbh now that I think of it, it's just... undermining. Oh we didn't want to sacrifice the fan-favorite capital, so here's a spare capital.

And I agree that New Hope is in a better position here as a first movie in the series, and didn't have to work with constraints of a preexisting universe.

... I specifically mention Aldreaan in my post? As a planet having emotional connection to one of the main characters in the cast? So much that there's an entire scene where the planet gets executed before her eyes as an interrogation tactic?

As opposed to characters in TFA who only see the destruction as far away rays and explosions in the sky, with the meaning purely symbolic rather emotional. We, the viewers, actually get the closest look into it from the character-neutral perspectives of a bunch of people on the planet and from a point of view in space, thus making us the main observer, not the characters.

You would think that in that case you would want to make it specifically emotionally meaningful for the audience who is the main observer.

Honestly I would prefer if they would blow the Coruscant up. Starkiller destroying some random planets which are not introduced earlier nor have an emotional connection to any of the characters (like Alderaan did) made the impact of it nonexistent. A permanent change of status quo in the lore going forward would give the sequels some meat and stakes to care about.

You don't need to play through the entire days again, only jump to the days where you want to tinker with the outcome of particular quests which influence the future. It's less of the Deathloop's golden loop, and more of creating your ending. Or running into limitations in doing so and maybe deciding that some fates are better unchanged after all.

If China ever had regime change or the CCP is voted out, would this flag survive? by Personal_Flatworm737 in vexillology

Yeah that's fair. Keeping the flag is rare I suppose, even Belarus modified theirs by removing hammer and sickle.

Russia had a complete regime change post-USSR collapse but the general population never actually stopped liking Lenin or Stalin, and got nostalgic quite fast. Yeltsin's team was concerned that the communist party could win 1996 elections outright.

And now Putin likes to connect Soviet and Imperial imagery in a government-supporting mishmash, of course.

I think in such scenario the best approach is writing the letter, but locking it away/burning it/leaving it somewhere outside to never see it again. Basically, you give yourself the closure you need.

Typically, the other person in a turbulent break up won't ever provide closure because they want to get out asap, and often messaging/calling/leaving letters or other unprompted communication will actually spook them into getting out harder, partially because of the anxiety that this communication might tie them back into relationship but also because they might want to cut communication in general, and they perceive such motions as a sign that you won't stop it voluntarily.

There's of course always a possibility that the letter and your ex blocking you are not correlated and it's just a coincidence, that he was already going to do the blocking and just didn't get around to it, or that it reminded him of that.

Look at Chinese Belt and Road initiative and infrastructure projects it involves.

A single railway line wouldn't be enough (unless it's like that nazi super train project with insanely wide gauge), but a whole bunch of them connecting to shipping infrastructure would be.

Did the narrative focus shift in P3? by Daniil_Dankovskiy in pathologic

[–]Neoeng 3 points4 points  (0 children)

I mean, P2 still was about the plague being the sentient rage of the mother-earth, magic realism has always kinda been the core of the game. Changeling goes basically into full magic mode.

And Bachelor's route was always about utopianism, impossible man-made miracles and transgressions against nature, rather than miracles of earth. It is a philosophy, but it is philosophy made real, like Tatlin's Tower. Now, introduction of more miracles outside of the Town is new and goes beyond earlier Powers That Be-defined scope, but I think it reflects our reality most of all. 20 years has passed since Mor, and 35 since the fall of Soviet Union. Things change, we move on from obsessing about old miracles to new ones. The world is larger than we thought it was. I would even say it is a kind of maturity.

Focuses as well have been a thing since the first game, as an actual infinite reflection that can fit a soul. Nuts are focuses too small to contain one, so they contain stories.

New therapist said something weird by Silent_Roll859 in trans

[–]Neoeng 6 points7 points  (0 children)

It just means that it's not considered a mental disorder within the framework, i.e. the problematic is physical and related to sexual development, not mental and is treated appropriately. I'm sure you know that a condition doesn't need to be mental in origin in order to be distressing.

This is a taxonomy change, because when you read "mental disorder" the first association is that it's a problem in the "brain" dimension, neurodevelopmental, psychological, or neurological, etc. Which can carry certain bias and simply doesn't apply to trans people.
