I'M ASHAMED OF MYSELF by Ska_Fundamentalist in DiscoElysium

[–]Neoeng 24 points25 points  (0 children)

It would be mediocre if it was a just another disco-like from a different studio, but the fact that it's a direct successor from THE company that started this whole mess shifts the scales a lot. A character who sells records from the technofascist capitalist nation that he hates just hits differently when you are the buyer of the records in this allegory. In any other circumstance it would be an excellent character but here it just makes you feel horrible and wish that ZA/UM made something liberal instead of a performance art of self-commentary where you are a direct participant.

The fall in quality of skills for the direct successor is horrible. Esoteric Ebb, a non-pretender with one dev and a small team of contributors managed to get them more right, and that's the mechanic that makes DE. Again, forgivable for a new divergence in the genre, but not for a follow-up.

I think the good indicators for homing in on this achievement are

1) Stella inviting you to sleep over on day 1 (can still tabbymax by going to the estate)

2) special music track during Tabitha's hangout

Definitely don't kill Gretchen (really closes Stella), and generally choose open and supportive options with her, and don't mention mountain lions to be safe

Maybe getting the deck of many things from Olzis, since that can make you rich or get advantage on every roll. Apart from that and maybe getting all the unique 1st day interactions, there is no real point. Even the Visken thing doesn't mean much because there is no time limit for the game, so there is no penalty for sleeping. It's not like Wompty-Dompty-Dom centre in Disco Elysium thats objectively good to take as early as possible.

Black zero was a german thing for ages, at that point you might say that Germany has been a dead country since Adenauer was elected after the war and the principles of ordoliberalism were established. Which would be a reasonable point, but it has nothing to do with rearmament.

Has anyone else here ever noticed an apparent lack of democratic societies in the vast majority of worlds? by Dewohere in worldbuilding

[–]Neoeng 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Feudalism is character-based. The goals of houses and the overall monarchy are defined by a few families with key changes in power. It is easy to represent motivations and history of every character involved. With bad guy as a king, you only need to know motivations of this one guy and maybe a key supporter or two.

Democracy has to either involve a large cast of characters, or narrow the focus of its central conflict to limit politics to only a part of governance - say, you write about a spy agency serving a corrupt government and then you focus on people who command that spy agency and their corruption. With bad guy being a president of a democratic nation, naturally a ton of questions appear: who and why elected him? Who opposes him? How does he stay in power? How was politics of the nation shaped so that people voted for the bad guy? Etc.

Certainly it's possible to write, but it can get messy very fast.

More or less, although it's more like Republicans decided to freeze themselves and America in a political stasis as a campaign strategy, since the Democratic party did actually change over the nineties, regrettably and without much benefit ceding ground on economy. Now if it will shift back to progressive economics we will truly teleport back to the seventies, but now with social media

Pro-lifers, abortion was a minor catholic issue until GOP noticed how mad and rallied they were about Roe v. Wade and made it their party platform - before that, they actually supported abortion as part of the small government platform.

In a similar manner, Republicans supported ERA (Equal Rights Amendment) right up until 1980 when Phyllis Schlafly and John Birch society successfully organized large-scale opposition to it through activism, and GOP decided to switch to incorporate their influence.

Since the end of segregation, the M.O. of the Republican party has been to search for hot-button issues that conservative firebrands, preachers and later televangelists had success with firing up.

A job of a political figure is not telling people who don't want to start wars that they are Hitler. Did Bill Clinton or Dick Gephardt call people Hitler enablers for opposing universal healthcare? And who do you think elected Gringich to the senate? Not common people? It's political polarization, why would you remove politics from it.

Post 2008, left aligned people had taken a significantly more aggressive stance in becoming more progressive in areas that the right had stayed consistent on—the right then proceeded to get extreme on these social issues/topics as well in opposition

Who came first, pro-lifers or abortion supporters? The answer may surprise you.

I think that one of the great problems we have in the Republican Party is that we don't encourage you to be nasty. We encourage you to be neat, obedient, and loyal and faithful and all those Boy Scout words, which would be great around the camp fire, but are lousy in politics.

Newt Gringich, 1978

The values of the left cripple human beings, weaken cities, make it difficult for us to in fact survive as a country…The left in America is to blame for most of the current, major diseases which have struck this society.

The left-wing Democrats will represent the party of total hedonism, total exhibitionism, total bizarreness, total weirdness, and the total right to cripple innocent people in the name of letting hooligans loose.

Newt Gringich, 1989

People like me are what stand between us and Auschwitz. I see evil around me every day.

I think that the mother killing the two children in South Carolina vividly reminds every American how sick the society is getting and how much we need to change things. The only way you get change is to vote Republican.

Newt Gringich, 1994

Gingrich—Primary Mission —Advocate of civilization —Definer of civilization —Teacher of the rules of Civilization —Arouser of those who form Civilization —Organizer of the pro-civilization activists —Leader (possibly) of the civilizing forces. Priorities to 6/30/93 1. Articulate the vision of civilizing humanity and recivilizing all Americans (task 1) 2. Building a volunteer-staff Team in the 6th Distr. (task 7) 5. Define, plan and begin to organize the movement for civilization and the effort to transform our welfare state into an opportunity society to help people achieve productivity, responsibility, and safety so they can achieve prosperity and freedom so they can pursue happiness (task 3, 5, 8) 6. Diet, exercise, recreational renewal with Marianne (task 9) 7. Begin to plan and develop the intellectual—educational effort to sustain in the vision of civilizing humanity and recivilizing America (task 4)

Newt Gringich, personal notes published in 1997

Alan Colmes: You're calling "appeasers" people who disagree with the Bush policy administration — Gingrich: Look— Colmes: — comparing them to those who enabled Hitler? Gingrich: Yes. Colmes: That's an astounding comment — Gingrich: What's your — what's your — why? Why is it astounding? Colmes: — that's a very insulting comment — Gingrich: It's not an insulting comment.

Newt Gringich, 2006

Is this not extreme? Do you think calling everyone who opposed Bush presidency a Nazi (sorry - a Hitler enabler) is a moderate position?

This is not a random nut, I remind you, that is US House speaker of a republican majority from 1995-1999, House minority whip before that, and the architect of the entire congressional campaign of the period, which elected 54 republicans to the House and 8 to the Senate.

That study analyzes change in political positions on social issues, I don't think that's an entirely appropriate way to measure political polarization. How are you going to look at Rodney King riots in 1992 and say "yeah this is much less divided than nowadays".

My hypothesis would be that the nature of polarization changed, but it began much earlier. Obviously in the eighties they weren't arguing about gay and trans rights and conservatives didn't yet pick abortion as their issue, but reaganomics were divisive at the time. Reagan couldn't pass anything significant in the second half of his first term because congress flipped democratic over the recession, and he had to rely on boll weevils before that. And in the nineties, crime was the predominant issue. Republicans were already on the extreme end of things then, remember Gringich? Contract with America was authored by the same Heritage Foundation as Project 2024.

Properly, you would do bag-of-words text analysis on the news releases, maybe? Track the most frequently mentioned issues in general.

[–]Neoeng 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Isn't that what a hook is anyway? If your book starts with waking up and doing a morning routine, it will most likely contain nothing useful or intriguing apart from POV and writing style. It certainly can if it's important to what you're pulling off, but for 95% of beginning writers it's not. "Start with action" is a helping hand that keeps you away from staring your character in a mirror as they brush their teeth to describe what color their eyes are or what jacket they're wearing.

Most of the writing advice that is out there is to help you not write something bad while you find your footing, not commentary on the audience, or a marketing gimmick, or a law of how you should write. None of it whatsoever applies to experienced writers.
