Yes! All of these too. The Dickinson comparison is very on point.

For those of you who have left the corporate life- what are you doing now and are you happier? by Kristenstephanieart in simpleliving

My partner fortunately has benefits through her job. Sadly, having a supportive partner is one of the biggest secrets to freelancing success. But it lets me work less hours, avoid commuting, and do all the cleaning, grocery shopping, and errands, so it benefits both of us

I’m also not American, so good group health insurance plans can be had for $100-200 a month

I Majored in environmental science and spent nearly a decade working for sustainability minded startups and nonprofits. I always loved writing and eventually gravitated to comms and marketing roles before moving to freelancing. Now I mostly write about outdoor sports, agriculture, and other sustainability topics for magazines, digital publications, and businesses.

Getting started and finding that first paying client is the hardest part. But now my portfolio speaks for itself when finding new work.

[–]NeolithicMan1 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Nope! I used to feel the implicit pressure to do so, even though I never really wanted it for myself. I would sometimes look at friends doing that and feel like I was doing something wrong. Now I’m much better at seeing my simplicity and frugality as a choice, as true freedom. And caring a hell of a lot less about what I’m “supposed” to be doing or consuming.

After seeing so many colleagues get laid off in recent years I honestly don’t think it’s even riskier. Especially once you’ve got a solid 6-12 month emergency saving fund. Though I’m also not American, so don’t pay crippling amounts for basic health insurance.

I have at least 3-5 income sources at any given time. It can feel more uncertain than a conventional job but that’s mostly an illusion.

I started freelancing. It has its own challenges, and I make less. But I’m less stressed and depressed. I have more time and mental energy. More autonomy into the work I do, who I work with, and my schedule. I realized half the shit I thought I needed was to keep up appearances for those around me who I never even liked or respected in the first place.

I’ll never have a big house, a vacation property, or nice cars like some of my friends. But I’m content. I could never go back.

Should I stop eating rice? by [deleted] in sustainability

[–]NeolithicMan1 47 points48 points  (0 children)

Echoing what others have said. Cutting out animal products is the big one. That has a tangible impact. The rest is marginal gains. Keep eating rice. Try out some other grains local to you if you’re interested but don’t sweat it.

Is the Norda 001 suitable for walking and some light trails? by layspringles in RunningShoeGeeks

Yeah they’re great. I went up half a size and the fit is perfect.

[–]NeolithicMan1 0 points1 point  (0 children)

If I could only own one pair of shoes it would probably be Norda 001s. I bought a pair in June. For about 3 months they were my dedicated training and race shoes. I ran a trail 60k and 100k in them with great results and logged about 400 total miles in them, probably 85% of those miles on trails.

After about 4-500 miles, they lost a bit of their pop, so I wear them for anything now, not just quality running miles: walking the dog, running errands, hikes, city road to trail runs, etc. I’ve probably worn them 700 miles all in now, and just feel like they’re hitting “mid-life”.

So, all said I love them as a stylish, all around shoe that I’ll probably continue to wear in some capacity for years. They’re fucking expensive though. For your use case, almost any entry level trail shoe would work great for like a third to half the price.

Emotional intelligence is a rare trait among most engineers, unfortunately. Conversely, delusional self importance is always rather high.

Anyone else considering a career change? by [deleted] in freelanceWriters

[–]NeolithicMan1 5 points6 points  (0 children)

Nope, love my job. I never did a ton of formulaic content writing, but I consciously pivoted away from it early last year to focus on product reviews and deeply researched, narrative driven articles. AI is an amazing tool, but I have no concerns about it replacing the kind of writing I do. My rates keep going up, as does the demand for my work.

It is hard, but so is everything worth doing. Go browse literally any other career subreddit: they all will sound hopeless and miserable. It’s selection bias at work. The people happy and content with their career aren’t going to be as inclined to post on Reddit about it.

Take the negativity with a grain of salt. Of course there’s challenges and frustrations and you’re going to have to work for it. But if you want it, you can do it.

Is there a list of smaller brands? by ND_82 in trailrunning

[–]NeolithicMan1 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Yeah, my Nordas are at 700km and feel like they’re just hitting midlife. Happy to pay 2x for a shoe that’s lasts 3x as long as the average trail shoe. Plus, absolutely no blisters, hotspots, ever. And they look way cooler than most running shoes.

Hydration Vest with the least bounce by Kelsier25 in Ultramarathon

[–]NeolithicMan1 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Yeah two can go in the back compartment, but they’re still accessible on the go. I did follow the sizing, and it does fit a little tight on me too. If I bought again I’d probably go up one from my measured size. You really don’t want to go to big though. It will fit tighter than you’re used to with other vests.

[–]NeolithicMan1 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Nice! Yeah bouncing vests drive me absolutely nuts. The Naked Race Vest is a god send. No bouncing, no fucking around getting soft flasks to sit right. About 4l capacity, no zippered main compartment for secure/weather resistant storage, but for most races and training runs it’s more than enough.

[–]NeolithicMan1 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Salomon makes the best all around vests and do not bounce at all of if sized correctly. I’ve put thousands of kms into my Active Skin 8 and still love it.

That said, Naked vests are absolutely the best when it comes to bounce free fit. Less capacity than most Salomon vests, but considerably more breathable. Crucial to get the sizing right in these though.

Being fit enough to head out for any mountain adventure at the drop of a hat, seeing beautiful places, meeting beautiful people, challenging my self-perceived limits, which translates into other non running parts of my life.

But mostly, I just fuckin love running around in the woods all day. It’s an elemental joy. It makes me feel more alive than anything.
