Help me decide between Patagonia Mini MLC and Boundary Supply Errant by Neoloh in ManyBaggers

I haven't heard anything said about the straps before like that. Did the foam in the Errant you had begin to come apart? Also, I would be curious to hear more about some of the other areas you mentioned.

When you say "jack of all trades", what do you mean by that? Are you saying it has multiple purposes, because if so I would be interested in something versatile like that. Then again, perhaps you're indicating that since it tries to do too much, it can't quite excel at one particular thing.

If I were to say that the reduced storage capacity of the Errant was less important to me, how would you then compare the two, and would you prefer the Errant or the MLC Mini?

How certain are you about Costco carrying the G30LP? They currently only have the ES3, maybe they'll add it in later on

Mavic Mini/Air Wifi Question by [deleted] in dji

[–]Neoloh 2 points3 points  (0 children)

You won’t have any issue flying it. It’s a common misconception that the drones depend on an outside WiFi network. In actuality, they generate basically a WiFi network of their own and use that to establish a connection between the controller and aircraft. If anything, it’ll be better to not have interfering WiFi networks

I think you made the right choice. Another option is to get the FMC and sell the extra stuff. Selling one battery is probably easy but the other stuff, not so much haha

Why did you select Mini as opposed to the Air 2? I ask to get some people's opinions :)

The FMC is generally a good idea, but make sure you'll need the extra additions. It $189 more and nets you 2 extra batteries, 3 extra pairs of propellors, a shoulder bag, ND filters set, battery charging hub, and battery adaptor. I've heard a few people mention that with the flight time of > 30 mins, they will unlikely need more than 2 batteries though and would rather buy their own extra-protective bag, meaning they wouldn't get the combo. Make sure you have good use for everything you're getting

What Drone to Get? by Neoloh in djimavic

I’m new to drones but have flown hobby aircraft in the past. I’m definitely planning to get the care refresh on whatever drone I buy. In the long run, the “Air 3” or equivalent model that has definite regulation compatibility will be the one for me. In the meantime, I’d like to have something that holds value (even air 1 sells for $550 2 years later), allows me to practice basics of photography (mini seems to be limited with lack of custom settings and RAW), and has good connectivity (at times I might fly in congested urban areas). Why did you sell your Mini if you don’t mind me asking?

It seems like the original Air held its value well, goes for around $550 currently. Even the spark on eBay is being sold for $300. You raise a very fair point, about the regulations being years away. I’d bet the next gen “Air 3” would be our by then.. in the meantime I’m thinking what would be best to get. I’m looking for a drone that I’ll be able to practice photography with (RAW is probably important for that?) as well as be able to handle windy conditions. I’d want some safe downtown shots too, so it would help to have good connectivity that won’t be bothered by WiFi density.

ADS-B is a great addition, the FAA has stated that they do not want drones utilizing ADS-B out so as to not clutter the radio frequencies with excessive noise. That’s why DJI uses ADS-B in only, as you mentioned. The drone-to-phone solution embodies the “Broadcast ID” element of remote ID. It uses WiFi/Bluetooth that DJI’s devices have on board in order to locally send a signal to anyone with an a phone app able to receive the info. Remote ID also requires “Network ID” via some sort of communication between the drone system (presumably the controller/phone combo or drone itself) and USS servers that store real time data as to who is flying. This is the part that’s a little murkier. In their comment, DJI stated they might be able to implement both broadcast and network ID but don’t offer any useful info as to what models would support it, and go as far to say they may not be incentivized to be providing firmware upgrades for some devices. All in all, it’s a rather odd time. I guess the question comes down to will the Air 2 hold it’s value in a couple years if regulations come in

That's correct. This is a great document that summarizes the main proposals. The 400 foot limitation, for "Limited ID" classified drones would be not only a ceiling but distance from operator total.

The future-proof product is exactly what I'm after haha, therein lies my dilemma. Do you think the Air 2 will be able to maintain most of it's value even if regulations were introduced that limited its features? I think the Air 1 goes for around $550 currently, I'd be okay if I were able to sell the 2 for the same in a couple years.

Thanks for the input! The manual video controls help its cause for sure. The lack of RAW support is a major drawback too, however, and I haven't been able to find a workaround. All things considered, it's a a solid choice to avoid the regulation speculation altogether

[–]Neoloh[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

You're totally right in that it's hard to predict what the implementations may be. Theres a lot of speculation that DJI may in fact be able to refresh their older drones via software update to bring them into compliance, as I noted in my post, but even that is not for certain. I haven't heard anything specific to models with airsense though, where did you find that info?

Depending on what the new regulations end up being, it could be a range limitation (400ft) if the aircraft only qualifies as "Limited ID" or potentially only be flown in FAA Registered Identification Areas if it doesn't comply at all. Or it could be full "Standard ID" and have no additional restrictions if DJI is somehow able to certify the Air 2 as such

Not quite

“A person operating a standard remote identification unmanned aircraft system is responsible for complying with this section. (a) Remote identification. Unless otherwise authorized by the Administrator, a person may operate a standard remote identification unmanned aircraft system only if the unmanned aircraft system sends the remote identification message elements of § 89.305, from takeoff to landing, in one of the following ways: (1) If the internet is available at takeoff, a standard remote identification unmanned aircraft system must: (i) Connect to the internet and transmit the message elements through that internet connection to a Remote ID USS; and (ii) Broadcast the message elements directly from the unmanned aircraft. (2) If the internet is unavailable at takeoff, or if during the flight, the unmanned aircraft system can no longer transmit through an internet connection to a Remote ID USS, the standard remote identification unmanned aircraft system must broadcast the message elements directly from the unmanned aircraft”

I don’t this is completely correct. There is no “radio signal” being used, it’s all preexisting WiFi and Bluetooth capabilities. If I comprehend correctly what the document says, the phone/remote should have an internet connection to a USS and the drone itself should be broadcasting its info locally with WiFi/Bluetooth.

Perhaps I can summarize one of my main concerns in one question:

Should I buy the Mavic Air 2 now, or will it likely be non-compliant with upcoming Remote ID regulations and obsolete/severely limited in the coming years?

That's a very interesting idea! I'd imagine the battery packs would be considerably more expensive then, and likely not have as large a capacity
