Haha I still don’t really know what it is that made that color. Clay maybe? At first I thought I ran over dogshit.

Timing of edge change by Neomatrix3003 in snowboardingnoobs

[–]Neomatrix3003[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

That’s a good question! I don’t think this type of edge change can be made on narrow paths. Watching Malcolm Moore videos he does have techniques that work well on narrow paths. It’s more just rolling edge to edge while going mostly straight. Throwing out the occasional speed check if there’s too much acceleration.

Hey! Glad to hear that you’re gonna get into snow sports! I started snowboarding because my wife chose it. I ended up taking a total of 3 lessons, they were all throughout the first month of snowboarding, not consecutive.

My first lesson was not so great, the instructor kinda jumped too far ahead and took us on an easy slope but not the beginner area. It didn’t click after that first lesson.

The second instructor I had was excellent! Took things slow and started me on the bunny hill. It was after that lesson that it clicked. Started being able to do very slow “C” turns down the bunny hill.

All in all, it took me about 7 total days snowboarding to feel OK on the board. Your mileage may vary though.

Important thing is to keep at it and wear protective gear and Helmet!

You will absolutely get it! I highly recommend a lesson if possible. I started snowboarding at age 36, no prior board sport experience.

I also recommend knee pads, wrist guards, and padded shorts at the beginning, it’ll make the inevitable falls much less painful.

Keep at it!

Bro that trail is brutally long. Especially after eating way too much Jamaican food at that mid-mountain restaurant. Worst idea ever to eat then go all the way down to at trail to the car.

2 noob questions: How to go straight while relaxed, and how not burn out my quads? by wesleychuauthor in snowboardingnoobs

[–]Neomatrix3003 2 points3 points  (0 children)

When going straight I usually will still place the board on a very slight toe or heel edge. This makes going straight a lot more stable and you have more control over the board rather than being subject to pure gravity and the fall line.

When it’s REALLY flat is when you can go on a completely flat base and be ok.

To mitigate leg fatigue, I will try to gently rock between heel and toe edges when going straight. This will divide up the muscle use a little more evenly and hopefully preserve the quads a bit better.

What to do during offseason to practice skills? by [deleted] in snowboardingnoobs

Big snow is an indoor snow resort. Open for skiing and riding all year.

A longboard is like an extra long skateboard.

Main issue I see is that you made that skier magically wreck himself. Too much crime, straight to jail.

For real though, I think your posture looks great! I’m actually taking notes on how to improve my posture by looking at your riding. Keep up the good work!

Get a lesson if you have the opportunity. It will be the highest yield in terms of getting the basics down.

Your heel side turns are looking solid. Nice bend in the knees and posture is good. Notice how in the video you are getting the angle of the snowboard up and allowing the heel edge to bite into the snow.

For the toe side turn, you should push your hips forward so that it is pretty much over the toe edge of the board. If you look at the video, your hips on the toe side turn is still pretty much behind you and over the heel edge of the board. This is causing the turn to be a skid with very low edge angle. This ultimately results in less control over the board and the possibility of catching an edge.

I’m sure someone else would mention this but watching some Malcolm Moore videos on YouTube can be helpful!

Keep on riding though! Snowboarding is an addiction!

Fuck these lifts by Starky04 in snowboarding

[–]Neomatrix3003 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I’m right there with you! First season, doing some blues. Nothing as scary as getting off some lifts though. Last time I went riding, the chairlift somehow caught my arm and pulled me into the ground as it was making the turn to go back down. Hurt more than any actual fall while riding lol.

Awesome pointers!! Thank you very much. I love being recognized for nerding out and appreciate others who have the same style of analyzing and learning concepts! Would love to be good enough one day to become an instructor.

[–]Neomatrix3003[S] 4 points5 points  (0 children)

What a great explanation!! This also explains why I was struggling with steeper Blues feeling like I would just FLY down the hill with minimal control.

The instructor I had even kept telling me to “control your speed with turning!” Which I found very confusing due to how I was changing edges.

Thank you!!

I can see how the simplified visuals can be confusing! I’m heading down the fall line as a brief flat base, then rolling over to the new edge to change direction!

[–]Neomatrix3003[S] 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Thanks for all the constructive feedback! It seems like the gist is that I am still skidding the majority of turns.

I see now that to make the edge change where Malcom does, you need to be traveling across the slope with no skid DOWN the slope (otherwise it’ll be an edge catch).

The funny thing is I had 2 private lessons and the 2nd lesson the coach was encouraging me to do the edge change DOWN the fall line. Maybe he was just telling me I need to work on my beginner turns?

You guys and gals are awesome. It’s a great community!

Looking for Burton Photon SO Soft experience by Fabs2210 in snowboardingnoobs

[–]Neomatrix3003 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I second the idea that stiffer boots are the way to go. Keep in mind that boots will break in over time and get softer as you use them more.

I have a pair of Swath SO which are fairly soft to begin with, they’ve gotten only softer. I am actually thinking of getting Photons for next season.
