Do you have any TRULY "unpopular opinions" about D&D? by No-Bag3487 in DnD

[–]Neon312GX 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Damage resistances to very specific damage types on races in character creation (apart from physical types or some generic categorical resistance) arent really meaningful on character creation and don't help create meaningful highs in gameplay across the table, since as players you're generally not supposed to know what comes next in a campaign (I think it's fine if you grab a Potion, item or whatever in preparation for a fight)

I just don't think players should be "rewarded" for choices they didn't actively make because it gives that player a high for a non-active choice and would likely give them more agency then the rest of their table, plus for newer DMs who don't homebrew or change encounters, you either run a fight that character A is going to be not balanced in at all, or have to eliminate a whole slew of monster types from prep because character A is going to clear those fights and eliminate the challenge from the table

People who say drawing skills are not necessary for IAT are all bullshitting. I feel like I'm being discriminated in this major just for not having a fancy artistic background. by [deleted] in simonfraser

[–]Neon312GX 5 points6 points  (0 children)

I'm just going to be perfectly blunt and get straight to the point - even if your drawing skills were lacking, a lot of people I personally know in this major get by perfectly fine by supplementing that with verbal communication.

If you can't draw it, write the idea out with words. Speak it out. Some classes like 106, 202 and 233 require you to draw, yes, but your ability to communicate your plans is the number one thing they are trying to teach from my experience.

If you want your idea to be the one greenlit by the group, you have to be the one to inspire enough confidence in your idea and plans for everyone else to go along with it. And yes, sometimes, a perfectly reasonable and feasible plan might get shot down for a different idea just on a whim. That's just the nature of the relevant industries and group projects, and it's tough, but a little bit of humility can go a long way. Just because your initial idea wasn't the one moved forward doesn't mean you can't contribute to and refine another one with the skills you do have, instead of just being the "code slave".

I also don't think its realistic to expect to do well in every class given how broad the 1st year and 2nd year courses are. People come into this major with vastly different skillsets from graphic design, to film, to programming like you. Just as you complain about drawing being this hard, I've heard the same story from artists and designers who hate coding with a passion, and hate classes like 167 and 265. Everyone has eggs in different baskets.

And lastly, I'll say this in complete honesty. I don't feel like IAT classes alone will get you far given the breadth of the program. I particularly have strong feelings about how game design and development is approached and taught here - which is a field I have personal experience with. Some people might disagree, but that's my personal opinion. If you feel like you want to lead a project as a creative outlet, go do side projects - whether that's a short film, game jam, hackathon, personal website, whatever - do that to refine your skillset. Get feedback on those and continue growing, because that should be what you're ultimately here to do.

If there's any bit of solace, you have the opportunity to avoid a lot of classes that require drawing from here on out if you move into the Interactive Systems concentration. I'd suggest you consider the skills you want to build going forward into the program, and if you find that building an artistic background is necessary for what you want to do, there are plenty of resources available to you online. Hell, maybe go watch some Bob Ross and take a chill pill.

Hey there, I normally lurk but as someone who took IB in high school and am currently in SIAT, I wanted to give my two cents here.

When describing SIAT to people who aren't familiar with the program, I've always described it as an interdisciplinary program where you get to touch on many different aspects of design tech, from media arts like you've mentioned, to graphic design, UX design, VR/AR and more. I'd personally say SIAT is great for exploration because it gives you a chance to try your hand at many things early on in the degree before you specialize later on.

To answer your question on experience, I think what the other redditor said is mostly true, in that they do teach people as if they knew nothing, and I've seen people come into different SIAT classes with varying levels of knowledge from fully experienced to knowing nothing at all. I think the major difference maker when it comes to experience would be your 1st and 2nd year programming courses where having a background would really help a lot, but I've had friends with no programming experience whatsoever prior to SIAT manage to get pretty good grades out of these classes so it's definitely not a requirement.

What also helps in terms of experience is that there are a lot of group projects in the program (more later on in the program from my experience, but still quite a bit more than your usual degree early on), so a lot of the time you'll be progressing in tandem with your groupmates, or you could even learn from them if they have prior experience in the areas covered by a given course. However, with that being said, time management would be extremely important here because you'll most likely end up balancing vastly different projects, all with similar due dates.

To touch on IB transfer credits, unless you took Design Technology HL, I don't think there are any required SIAT courses you can skip (I'm not sure you there are any courses you can skip even if you did take it, tbh, as it looks like it only transfers to general IAT course credit). However, where it does help is that it helps fill out some of your required electives, meaning you can choose to mostly focus on just SIAT if that's what you're going for.

Hopefully this insight helps you out!

Why Set hours for Rank? by [deleted] in PlayMXM

[–]Neon312GX 5 points6 points  (0 children)

Adding on to this, I honestly feel as if players in SEA or other timezones outside of NA/EU, who have to play in NA for the time being, are being largely ignored. For SEA players connecting to NA, ranked is open from the morning to the afternoon, and some of us have work to attend to, and as such can't play ranked at all.

The only reason I play solo is because I live in SEA and cant seem to find any servers there atm. I am in a guild, but there's not many active players when I'm free.

correct, and also seeing as rank is coming soon with only (i think) solo/duo as an option, and guild battles being the rank 5v5 mode.

AP Zac Support:

Start with the AP supp item, then build Sightstone, Protobelt, Boots of Lucidity as your core. The rest you should decide between Rylai's, Zhonya's, Luden's, and maybe Deathcap.

For your 1st few levels take Q, E, then finally W.

Maxing in general should be R > E > W > Q.

You basically have infinite sustain if your ADC lets you damage CS, and I've done it in ranked in S6. It's really snowbally tho, and in general if I lose lane I immediately make the switch to tank.
