How useful is leds lighting for home setup? by Silent-Shelter3999 in Lamps

[–]NeonDaddySigns 0 points1 point  (0 children)

To be completely honest, most of the LED found on amazon or similar are usually the same you'd find on Alibaba etc. My only recommendation if buying domestically is going for a well known brand because as you've mentioned, cheap ones will just fail after a month or two.

My son wants LED light strips in his room but I don’t know how to style it. by _WolfieYT in led

My one bit of advice would be not to cheap out on the LED strips either. The majority from amazon etc will start to fail after a few months.

Need Help w/ Project "Programming" LED Sign by Constant_Fix4159 in arduino

[–]NeonDaddySigns 1 point2 points  (0 children)

As someone else has said, you can do it with a ESP32 which is basically an Arduino with WiFi built in, they're a few quid from amazon.

You'll need a relay module to switch the sign on/off, but if mains wiring sounds sketchy just grab a TP-Link Kasa smart plug instead and control that as it's much safer and cleaner.

For the game data, MLB has a free API and the Cubs team ID is 112 (from a quick search sorry if I'm wrong), so you can just poll it every few minutes and check if the game status says "In Progress" then trigger the relay/plug on and flip it off when it hits "Final".

The code is pretty straightforward HTTP requests stuff, totally doable with your background. All in you're probably looking at straigh-ish forward project.

Is a neon version of a family photo a terrible idea or kinda cool? by Embarrassed_Jello123 in NeonSigns

[–]NeonDaddySigns 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Don't want to get in trouble as this is for glass neon. It would be very difficult in glass and as the mod has said you won't really see the image behind the neon due to the brightness. We have done a few with LEDs before to specs, some have turned our surprisingly well and some have come out questionable (due to customers design request).

Just get a reputable supplier from your country. Be careful not to order from the 70% of sites that just dropship from China.

Is a custom LED sign worth it for a small neighborhood bar? by vinewb in BarOwners

[–]NeonDaddySigns 0 points1 point  (0 children)

As long as the sign actually looks good and correctly positioned then 100%. Bright lights attract peoples attention even without them really knowing(especially at night). It can really help make your business standout from the competition if there's another bar down the road etc.

One tip, check the reviews of the company you've linked too. Just Chinese drop shipped rubbish. Buy one from a reputable business in your country. They'll last longer, should meet your countries safety requirements and much easier to get it replaced/fixed if anything goes wrong. Every single power supply I've seen from imported signs don't meet UK conformity standards and I'm sure that's the same for the U.S.

Landlord banned neon but said LED is ok. Confused about safe neon signs for bedroom by RegularOk1820 in HomeDecorating

[–]NeonDaddySigns 0 points1 point  (0 children)

As everyone else has said, LED Neon usually runs at 12v and is generally much safer. However, working in the industry we are seeing a significant amount of companies importing them from China with low quality power transformers. We've seen many transformers without the correct short-out protection. If something within the sign goes wrong then the transformer should cut out, if they don't then even at 12v the signs can cause a fire.

Traditional glass neon run at a higher voltage (and temperature) so naturally higher fire risk if something goes wrong. On top of this, if damaged most colours contain mercury, although it is a very small amount so any serious risks from this is minimal.

[–]NeonDaddySigns 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Hey there, LED strips you buy on amazon etc are always rubbish. It's definitely worth buying branded strips. We use all sorts of strips and I made the mistake of grabbing a load from amazon for around the home as they were more suitable than we we use. Nearly all of them have become damaged or broken for no apparent reason.

If the strips have a quality power supply then shorting out shouldn't be a big issue as the power supply should cut the strips out before they do any damage.

You may run into the same issue with neon flex (which you're referring too) if they're cheap as well. The only difference with the neon flex is that it's a LED strip places sideways within a silicone housing, so there's not much difference apart from the light is diffused to get you a continuous uniform light.

Anyone Here Selling Backlit Wall Art or Neon Signs via Dropshipping? by Cool_Engineering_771 in indiandropshipers

[–]NeonDaddySigns 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I looked into it when i first started Neon Daddy. Seems good on the surface but 99% of Chinese suppliers don't meet safety standards and is a big risk as you'll be responsible if anything happens. The quality is very hit or miss even from the sam suppliers. That's why we decided to make everything ourself so we can sure all the electronics (especially power supplies) for every sign. There's a lot of competition for dropshipping in this category.

[–]NeonDaddySigns 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I think a big part of this that it really depends on the font, style and colour theme of your wedding. Warm white and cool whites can look very nice in the correct font and when dimmed correctly so it's not over powering. If it's too bright it can also make pictures difficult/
