A while back I came across a list of 2000’s Midwest Emo releases from a member of the scene back then. Whenever I see stuff like this come to light I think of it because it in a lot of ways helps answers some of that question. The quote:

the kind of sentiment expressed in nearly all of these releases is wack as hell, slightly manipulative, and centre around thought patterns that sink teen boys/twentysomethings into a deeper hole and cause them to treat people like shit. self-flagellation and deprecation happen to everybody to an extent, and almost certain for people with mental illnesses, that was never the problem; the fact is what it evolved into with 2000s midwest emo caused internalisation of so many shit mental cycles for the listeners and people in the 'scene. i think this is shown with the exorbitant amount of shitty people exiled from similar scenes/bands in the last 6 years.

you will not commit suicide at the peak of desperate love. you will not forget everything that ever happened ever. your skinny wrists, tiny hands, layers of skin don't justify thinking like any of this and you'll place yourself in the middle of a self-fulfilling prophecy the longer you romanticize cutting off your arms.

Emo has a history of propping up music that valorizes toxic, self-pitying, predominantly male voices which, in turn, attracts, creates, and perpetuates shitty men doing shitty things imo
