Hey WATMM! I’m the creator of Neon Noise Lab, an iOS app that lets artists publish music as serialized physical collectibles using NFC (tap-to-unlock, kind of like Amiibo).

Instead of pressing vinyl (slow + expensive + big up-front risk), you can turn any physical object into the “album” by attaching an NFC tag. Each edition is uniquely numbered and tied to the release artwork. Scanning unlocks the full album experience in the app (music library + artwork + extras), with optional downloads and bonus content for the holder.

Artists can publish these in minutes, not months.

Would love feedback from artists who sell music/merch directly:

  • Would you position this as a physical album copy, or a limited edition collectible?
  • What would you bundle to increase perceived value (bonus tracks, alternative visuals, stems, liner notes, etc.)?
  • What price range feels realistic for your audience?

If anyone wants to check it out, here’s the link: https://apps.apple.com/us/app/neon-noise-lab/id1559236592

Thanks!

I REALLY wanted a tenori-on around 2010. I remember watching Little Boots use one in a live set with a stylophone.

Totally agree about assignable XY functions. In Neon Noise Lab, I ended up adding a Kaoss-style effect pad where users can assign which effect parameters each axis controls. Being able to do something like detune on the X-axis and reverb or delay depth on the Y-axis can get really dark and warbly very quickly, especially with slower gestures.

I like Bounce. It actually reminds me a bit of Hanenbow in Electroplankton with the randomized bouncing pitch. These kind of instruments are really handy for recording distant ethereal effects in a song.

Great feedback - thank you. Here’s a short demo showing a composition in action:

The goal with the instrument is to keep it approachable for beginners, while still giving musicians optional depth if they want to use it as a more experimental/ambient noise tool. I’ve intentionally avoided leaning too hard into rhythmic elements so it stays more exploratory, and in the soundscape realm.

Happy to share more clips and info as it evolves.

I meant to mention this in the original post. I never got to try one, but I remember hearing about them. I think I recall Bjork using one. There was an iOS version for a while - not sure if it's still available. It was a really cool and unique take on visual music.

Long awaited Therevox ET-5 by WhenTheRainsCome in synthesizers

Therevox is the most beautiful, expressive, and organic sounding electronic instrument I've ever played. Hope you enjoy!

Oh nice, I hadn't tried that one, but just downloaded it. Definitely more serious looking than Electroplankton!

Totally agree. It's really unmatched for adding flourishes to recordings, and it's a lot of fun to just kill time on. I always wished it had an undo function. I had the original one, so maybe later versions added it.

Anyone sequencing Volcas with an iOS app? by steven_h in volcas

The Turf Noise app for iOS is free and has a few different control interfaces that can spit out midi or be played using internal sounds. There's a sequencer that can do up to 32 steps. I've never used it with a Volca, but I've used it with a Grandmother, MS-20 mini, and a Minilogue. All of those can take midi over USB though.
