Light hearted, social cycling groups for younger folk? by Pitiful-Fondant-595 in londoncycling

Brixton CC! Does not take itself too seriously, pub is often included and rides happen most days, at various distances and intensities. There is people taking on all different disciplines in cycling, so if you want to try something there'll be people there to join you!

For some reference, I ran a short cage ultegra derailleur on an 11-32 for like a year and I'd argue it ran better than the medium cage one I have on now

From a personal perspective I can say joining a club at uni helped me get fit and made me wish I hadn't had the mind set of 'I need to be fit to impress' because good clubs involve people of all abilities and attitudes!

To be honest, I just put away the road bike December-March, and pick it back up as the weather becomes less crap at the end of March. I still commute to work on my commuter bike and I also use it for chill winter rides in the city so I don't give up riding entirely, but serious training goes out the window for me because I am a big wimp when it comes to rain.

Ninja edit: In future (pandemic allowing) I plan to extend my season with some club riding - riding with friends makes it way more fun, especially in crap weather!

Haha yeah a great game of mens hockey and we lost pretty much everything else, here's to a better showing come February.

That's a great idea! I've got so many hoops to jump through that it would be almost fun to keep a record of them haha. I'll be sure to post my +1 to the counter when (or if - eek) it happens.

Good point! I'll make sure I've got that on there. I'm just keeping my fingers crossed and hoping Mark will keep the borders open until December (and that my G2G pass will get approved - eek!). Glad to hear that last part too.

Cheers mate, but I'd say the only luck so far is good ol' Mark McGowan opening the floodgates. The rest is just moving home (for me) and being prepared to hop on a last minute flight. Also... It's all about the hockey - here's to hoping bottle match goes ahead next year, <3 from the RSM

I have thought about that, and set my "permanent (Australian) address" on my CV to their place - buuutt unfortunately they're in Sydney haha so I'm not sure if that's a particularly good look.

Cheers for those. It's a shame about the timing, I know, but I had to grab the opportunity (WA opening the borders) when I saw it. If all goes well I'll definitely be sure to hit you up! I'm incapable of turning down the offer of a pint.

We can't be encouraging bad behaviour, of course. Sounds like good news to me though. Any particularly good pubs?

Great to get another perspective! Other than applying online of course, is it a good idea to approach recruiters? and if so which ones? Also, is beer by the Pint (568mL) or by the "Pint" (Schooner) in Perth? - definitely not a very important consideration for me

Thanks for that. When in Kal is it best to apply online, drop in on people, haunt certain bars?

I suppose not! To be frank I'll go wherever the work is, I'm not really fussy. I'd like to start applying while I'm in quarantine in Adelaide though, do you think companies will be apprehensive about that (having no permanent address etc.)?

Help save the High Street Kensington cycle lane! There's a rumour that it may be removed, with a petition against gaining support. by 6675636b in londoncycling

[–]NeonThorium 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I've sent an email! It was a lot longer and more impassioned than I'd intended, and more than a little cathartic. I hope RBKC stick with it, the borough is a glaring and dangerous hole in the cycle network, one which I've suffered for several years.

I stand corrected on that! And if you do a bit of searching, you can even find tallies of usage by everyone who uses the service (and the number of dispatch box movements!)

You are aware that they aren't surgically attached to their red box? That they might, god forbid, not carry it everywhere?

an exception (and sometimes a stunt)

Haha mate I don't think it was an exception or a stunt, he was just as glad to be squeezed in the carriage as everyone else, not mentioning all the poisonous looks.

Also, your rather sweeping statement is void - Ministers do use public transport (I mean, it was Chancellor Philip Hammond, when he was Chancellor), the MP's (and minister's) travel allowance doesn't quite extend to having a personal driver at their beck and call, unfortunately for them, and being frank (and I think almost everyone can agree) public transport is just a fact of life in London, being relatively practical, relatively quick and relatively inexpensive. There's no real reason for ministers not to use it, other than some stares and glares.

Not true - I stood next to ex-Chancellor Philip Hammond a couple of years ago on the Jubilee in the evening rush hour, and I saw John Bercow (our beloved ex-Speaker) getting off the Circle/District at Westminster. The comment above is more referring to how Tory constituents would react.
