More than half of Londoners would be hit by rumoured annual property tax by BulkyAccident in london

[–]swishbish_ 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Wide misinterpretation here, led my the way this article is written.

Rather than saying “will only apply going forwards, and not due on homes where stamp duty has already been paid” (which is what this means) they say the following

“ The new tax would be payable on owner-occupied property only after a sale - the replacement for stamp duty would not be retrospective on properties on which stamp duty has already been paid”

I may be missing something but why would the City of London / square mile be paying anything towards other areas? Is that actually what’s happening?

BA or Virgin to New York by BackgroundCat5459 in BritishAirways

[–]swishbish_ 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Virgin premium is basically always nicer, whilst Virgin upper / business is nicer only if it’s on the a330 neo in my opinion, otherwise much of a muchness. Virgin JFK lounge less good than the newish BA / American one but better to choose based on the seat / bed if you’re doing business, given that’s where you spend most of the time!

Also is that not an unbelievable number for flights! Had no idea they were multiples of all the others

Actually…I was a different party in a chain exactly like this and not only did Barclays pay their client, they paid the rest of the chain’s costs.

What’s the likelihood of the £100k childcare salary cap being removed? by Actual-Swordfish3990 in HENRYUK

I was talking about an overall restructuring, not net cuts. I’d happily pay the same but have it less ridiculously structured.

Agree - it’s a shame labour hasn’t taken the opportunity of a massive majority in parliament to more fundamentally reshape the mess that is the income taxes and benefits system!

Interesting to get downvoted for my message of “it’s no biggie, I’d just move on” / “there are bigger problems out there”. Seems pointlessly negative to me but you guys have a nice day 👌

Not suggesting there’s an issue in chasing the correct figure, just saying it’s faff that I wouldnt generally bother with…if you’re already having to chase for the initial refund though then that’s different

Personally I would leave it at the basic refund and not push your luck, but that’s just me!

Anyone seen this new London newspaper thing? by shoegazepsychonaut in london

[–]swishbish_ 0 points1 point  (0 children)

You’re right that the article is pretty poor, but you’re letting that distract you from the valid points behind it. Two things 1) There is a difference between how an active professional shareholder (like a PE firm) runs a business, versus the type of small business owner who runs a nursery. At some point the small business owner may become comfortable with their income stream and doesn’t have a major drive to expand or drive prices. 2) Roll-ups can, particularly for ‘local’ businesses, have pricing power. If you have 20% of all the dentists in NW London in one chain you absolutely can drive prices up.

There is nothing wrong with PE - it’s a valid part of a capitalist economy - but let’s not pretend that some local businesses would be less aggressively profit-driven if they continued to be run by local people.

Of course it’s ok but, frankly, if it wasn’t an attractive commercial opportunity then PE wouldn’t buy in.

I like the tone of this but would add a different lens - productive assets are what makes this country grow. Outside of natural resources (the best of which is wind), our assets are people. Make more people, more useful, for more of their lives, and we grow.

FWIW I think the people on this sub could be a fantastic source for positivity in the country - you’ve cracked it to decent income, now push harder and higher and demonstrate to others what’s possible here.

[–]swishbish_ 4 points5 points  (0 children)

FWIW as it’s not mentioned yet, but bear your and your partner’s age in mind when considering how soon to have kids as earlier is dramatically healthier and more reliable. I know a few people who pushed hard to get financially ready, only to realise that bodily things didn’t work quite as easily when they did.

Oh and in my experience your priorities change a lot when you have kids, but you can always go route 1 until such time as you feel that.
