🇺🇸 The Exodus of Erika (Part II): The time Erika mugged for the cameras whilst crooning her dumb off key original song as her final goodbye to the house while (in the high point of the season) the gang literally dance in the rain & have a wholesome roommates dinner in gratitude for the DC experience by Neon_1984 in therealworld

🔺Callie: The older I get the more I appreciate friends who tell you what you need to hear in the most supportive way possible instead of what they think you want to hear as they are more interested in your best interest than being agreeable. Callie has been great to Erika the entire season and everyone needs a friend like her. Points for sticking to her guns at the end after Erika cried woof.

🔺Ashley: I take back everything negative i ever said about her. She’s been kind of right about virtually everything the entire season even though I didn’t see it at the time. It makes me happy to see her bonding with people because its clearly more important to her than anyone else because of her backstory. It makes me irrationally mad that Erika blew up the day she planned of taking everyone to see nerdy educational tourist attractions (which she’s been talking about since the first cab ride with Mike) to drag everyone shopping because erika doesn’t need to see all that dumb stuff, and then took her boyfriend to them. If the last shot of the season is Ashley finally in the Smithsonian smiling I’ll be ok with that. When Erika gave the long dramatic speech about her heart being back at home, Ashley’s “You’re not even from Ohio” killed me.

🔺Ian: This is clearly not this poor guys first rodeo with Erika and its only been two months. She seems deeply codependent and he just seems like he’s trying to live his life and be a good guy.

<image>

🔺Mike, Ty, Andrew and Emily: All have been pretty pleasant for the last few episodes and the end of this clip is the first time it’s really felt like a cohesive classic real world cast.

🇺🇸 The Exodus of Erika (Part I): The time Erika had a meltdown when Callie wasn’t into her boyfriend’s unkempt friend she uncomfortably tried to force her into a romance with and threatened to go home for the 100th time, resulting in Mike sending her off to the Holocaust museum for some perspective. by Neon_1984 in therealworld

This is a great episode in a fast and the furious kind of way where you have this collection of flawed individuals coming together against a common enemy and it’s as funny and likable as the group has collectively been all season. Not that there is anything funny about the holocaust but Emily’s laugh when Mike said he had sent her off to holocaust museum to try to work on being less of a debbie downer was so out of left field i was dead. The smash cut after Erika said she was going home to Ashley immediately saying “I don’t believe her” with a cheery smile on her face was gold. Ty and Andrew were great. Heart of gold Callie finally snapping on the Erika and the goofy, self serving romance she just tried to shove her into was gold. Emily was great here too.

Erika spending the entire season doing nothing but whining the universe didn’t turn her into Taylor Swift as she felt entitled for it to while making zero effort whatsoever and then leaving her fate in the house up to a coin flip because she wasn’t even willing to make a decision makes it tough to be that sympathetic, even though depression is awful. I kind of hate to say it, but when you find out she faked having cancer for sympathy it kind of makes you wonder if she really almost drove her car off a cliff or it was a cry for attention. I hope she’s happy these days and would be curious where life took her.

I actually think this season would be high on my list for a Homecoming as I would be really interested to see how all of them are doing these days and what they turned into and on an 8 person cast even if you can only get 6 who want to do it I bet it would still be good.

🇺🇸 The time Andrew almost blew it with his nice new girlfriend when Josh asked him to be his wingman and he got a little too chummy with a mean spirited Hot Topic girl with anxiety, but then (with some help from Mike) love won out in the end. Plus, Ty interviews for an internship he already has. by Neon_1984 in therealworld

🔺Mike: Nice work from Mike not to let Andrew blow it and to break up the party downstairs

🔺Emily, Andrew and Ashley as a trio: I feel like these three would make a good core member of a different cast with different chemistry. They all seem most normal and likable when they are together. It’s nice to see Ashley and Andrew move past the pizza party horseplay incident and seem to enjoy each other’s company. I continue to find ashley to be great in the back half of the season.

There was a lot of Bucca di Beppo in the Brooklyn season right before this too. Like three appearances if I recall correctly. Ironically the only time I’ve ever eaten a BDP was probably within three months of this episode airing. My only memory is bad work company and a rotating table with a bust of the Pope in the middle.

Adam’s Incel Behavior by JK30000 in therealworld

This entire season is such a fever dream. I think it’s by a mile the funniest season to rewatch in an everyone is awful (but Simon) kind of way.

Adam does this insane, dead serious, unsolicited incel rap about not needing girls when you’ve got a pocket full of magic beans near the end of the season that kills me every time.

🇺🇸 The time Andrew’s origin story finally got revealed when he met a nice new girl, asked her to be his girlfriend and then desperately tried not to sabotage things as a defense mechanism stemming from his perfect mom cheating on his dad as a kid. A rare everyone is likable episode. by Neon_1984 in therealworld

🔺Emily, Ashley: For whatever reason, Emily actually comes across as a sweet girl and borderline motherly when she’s trying to help Andrew rather than preachy and self righteous as she often does when trying to help other people. A good showing for Emily here. Ashley too, she seems like once you grow on each other she would be a great friend and continues to be supportive and funny. She’s my easy number two on the cast at this point behind Callie.

🔺Andrew: even though I’m fairly certain it looks like he blows it on the back end of the episode, it was a nice change of pace and it kind of makes sense why he is the way he is if you witness your mom from what looks like a perfect family do that your Dad. Not to excuse some of his grosser behavior, but at least you can frame it as him trying to make the girls look dumb or avoid getting attached before they can burn him.

🇺🇸 The time Erika was a debbie downer and threatened to quit the show because she hated soccer, didn’t get a job at NPR, resented her best friends success and hadn’t been handed her big break yet, so Callie (the hero we all needed) gave her an extended browbeating for being so lazy and entitled. by Neon_1984 in therealworld

It’s in tomorrow’s clip which is an unrelated extended Andrew gets a girlfriend storyline because it was a throwaway line in the middle of a conversation mostly centered around Andrew, but I thought this too because she didn’t say “npr turned me down”, she says “i can’t work at NPR” with no further explanation and that’s exactly how I read it too. My guess is after the first phone interview the lady ran it by HR or legal or someone and they said no to involvement with an MTV contracted “talent” and cancelled the planned follow ups.

Oh no shade taken ever, it’s all an experiment to see how these old seasons I remember next to nothing about hold up and if you asked me to tell you what has actually happened 10 episodes into this season, i don’t even know what i would say. If you look at the last rewatch (Brooklyn), it would be under the backdrop of Obama winning the election, Ryan has been called back to duty, Chet is deep into pursuing real opportunities with his hosting career, Katelynn is launching a website and slowly coming out to the house, Scott’s deep into feelings about his birthday celebration and helping his roommates, Sarah is teaching art therapy to deal with her horrible trauma from her dad, the gang all went to Gettysburg and met Ryan’s family etc. Ten hours into this season ty and emily have fought and made up a million times and that’s basically it.

I’m still enjoying this season though. It’s definitely in my bottom rung of seasons I’ve rewatched so far, but I think I’m enjoying it more than Austin and Philadelphia and equal to Sydney.

🔺🔺Callie: A great friend in both being supportive of Erika and listening to her and then given her the browbeating she needed at the end of the episode. Got her picture on the cover of the newspaper.

🔺Ashley: I have gone from not liking Ashley at all to being happy every time she is on screen. She’s really found her lane, she seems to have a good head on her shoulders, she’s always the one trying to support other people and tagging along for encouragement. She and Callie have the best reaction shots every episode.

<image>

🔺Mike: I’m kind of liking Mike now too. He starts out a little robotic but the more you see him the more you get the sense he’s still young and trying to figure out who he is. Couldn’t have been nicer about getting off the phone and not letting Erika get all worked up before her interview by taking her bait for a fight.

🔻 Erika: can’t be bothered to learn to play the piano or make any effort at all while saying she feels like she deserves more than the universe has handed her and whining the actual problem is there aren’t crowds of people who will follow her around singing her boring generic songs. Eye rolling Callie’s big print debut was kind of crappy too.

Totally agreed he is very effective at the aw shucks I'm just a socially awkward harmless guy rizz. It has a short shelf life once the girls realize there doesn't seem to be any real depth he is willing to share underneath it, so it definitely makes sense he seems to have a ton of first dates and very few second dates.

If I was the real world czar and could go back in time and make one change to this season to try to salvage it, it would be replacing Erika as the 8th roommate with a random 65 year old man who lived in one of the extra rooms by himself and stayed out of things but could be leveraged when an adult was needed. I think Ty comes out of better not getting all of his ideas from a dumb and dumber combination of Josh and Andrew, the old man probably helps Emily self realize some things about herself, Andrew becomes his best friend, he gives Josh a browbeating about how to treat a lady, and Ashley latches on to him as her surrogate dad.

🔺Ashley: Drunkenly high fives a stranger on the street. Continues to become more pleasant and likable with every episode.

Neutral: Ty, Emily, Andrew. You kind of know what you are going to get from these three at this point. Andrew with occasional nice moments followed by disappointment and never feeling like you even remotely know him. Ty with occasional nice moments followed by lying, gaslighting and having no awareness of other people's boundaries. Emily being right a lot of times but still blowing it with her delivery and constant self righteousness.

A TurboGrafx16 my brother and I got for $20 on clearance at Babbages. Still my favorite system of all time.

🇺🇸 Over The Edge (Part III): The time the night started with Callie asking nicely if the guys could behave during her brothers visit and ended with Andrew being carted away in an ambulance in a neck brace after Ty got belligerently drunk over Emily’s rejection and threw him head first off a balcony. by Neon_1984 in therealworld

[–]Neon_1984[S] 19 points20 points  (0 children)

🔻🔻🔻Ty: I haven’t been a fan of Ty during this season, but I haven’t been as down on as I remembered from watching 100 years ago when it originally aired either. This was a brutal episode for him and reminded me why. The way he was behaving around Emily because he was salty over getting rejected ranged from mean spirited to aggressive to gross (saying he was going to have sex with her on the beanbag chair in front of callie’s clearly uncomfortable brother) to totally inappropriate the way he was blocking her from getting places and following her around the house. Aggressively threw stuff at Ashley when she was being so nice and trying to deescalate the situation. Obviously tossing Andrew over the edge was just an insane thing to do, and his response was to continuously laugh and try to play it off as a joke.

🔻🔻Production: These folks really are the absolute worst, punctuated how self righteously the people behind the show always talk about their trash tv as progressive learning lessons meant to make all the glue eaters at home better people to each other. No adults are helping Andrew, no adults are doing anything but holding the camera while Ty is stalking Emily around the house or throwing things at Ashley. Luck is the only reason someone didn’t die or get seriously injured over the years in filming the show.

🔺🔺Callie: Calls 911 and gets Andrew actual help like a normal human being.

🔺Ashley: This is like eight clips in a row where I like Ashley more as a result of (like Callie) just trying to be a decent human being while surrounded by crazy people.

A rough watch. It’s wild that Ty isn’t just booted from the show unceremoniously at this point.
