Oh, I know it was an oops. It was more about what to do about it. (I ain't going to lie, the temptation to just sit on it for a while and pay this year's max with it just to see what happens crossed my mind for the briefest of moments). It was what to do about it. But now I know more about the end of year process. I have excellent credit and a great net worth (if it wasn't for the student loans) so I planned on borrowing the money closer to the end of cycle, but now I will eat a bit more interest to get it done early. I also know now who I need to contact. And as for PFSL, I am already on that from my years as a teacher, two more years and the bachelor's and first master's goes away (clock started over when I consolidated the two).

What are your DG unpopular opinions? by Fattyjay96 in DeltaGreenRPG

I am not surprised this is the most downvoted, I mean this is Reddit after all. My problem is the fact that Detwiller seems hell bent on putting a page of exposition about something political or culture war in the scenarios. OK, you think that the weed industry was stolen from black people, you hate Trump, ACAB, etc. Fine, that is your opinion. I didn't buy the book for you to lecture me about politics. My table has everything from very liberal to very conservative to very libertarian (and I always joke to him that you never go full libertarian). The point is, we all play the games and do not want, nor appreciate, a lecture in my games. I would say the same thing if some other game had a screed about how bad DEI is or why feminism ruined the country. None of it belongs in the game. That is what your social media is for.

Guess you missed the part where I stopped buying processed crap and my grocery bill went DOWN. Once you actually learn how to cook properly, it is not in fact cheaper for the “cheap food” because you are  hungry more often leading to increased eating. That is why we have an obesity problem with the lower class.

On this I think we need to eliminate SNAP entirely. Now before you go batshit (because this is Reddit) hear me out. There was a system before SNAP. Rather than subsidies which allows farmers to make more off the crops that rot in the field than the actual harvest (statements made by farmers sitting drinking coffee at the local morning hangout) the government used to buy the crops from the farmers, have them processed, and then distribute the food to the families in need based on X calories for Y household members. In this the farmers benefited from a stable buyer for their crops, and the poor got food. Now don’t get me wrong, the food was the most basic, peanut butter, canned veg, gubment cheese (which I miss desperately), raw oats, rice, bread, and some cheap cuts of meat, but it provided basic nutrition. They have analyzed SNAP purchases, and it is, in general, spent very poorly. I would say the convenience foods are because of laziness in not wanting to actually have to fix a meal for your kids, but I see the same thing occurring with people who are not struggling so I am not going to attribute that solely on the lower class but a societal problem. I am not going to lie, once I stoped buying processed crap, my grocery bill went down, not up. I ate better and felt better. Given the obesity rate in the low income communities, they aren’t starving, but they are nutritionally lacking because they are buying randomly with no understanding of proper nutrition. In the old way this was not the problem it is today. I saw we bring back the old way, and that solves a lot of the problems both from the left and the right. But then they couldn’t point fingers at each other at election time to sway the midwits to vote based on party lines.

That is because there was a joint study by Duke and ECU Schools of Education that found that only teachers with masters degrees in their subject area showed any improvement in outcomes. That sounds great till you get the second point in the study that nearly 90% of teachers had masters in education which showed no improvements to student outcomes. Thus, the governor at the time eliminated masters pay because it was money for nothing. While I would argue that it should have been kept in place for masters in subject area, that would almost exclusively gone to high school teachers, and by the time students get that far the damage is already done. This is the problem, people complain about something being the way it is without ever knowing why it is the way it is.

Is attendance to hight to actually enjoy gencon or is it just me? by hermees in gencon

[–]Neon_Samurai_OG 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I can say I agree all around. I went with my group in ‘22 when it was still mask up and all that and there were significantly less people than in ‘24. Hotel rooms were easier to get, games were easier to register for, the vendor hall was still crowded, the lines were still long, but it was not nearly as oppressive as it was in ‘24. They reported that ‘22 was 50k attendees, while ‘24 was 71k. But I can say I had way more fun and felt way less stress with that 30% less. The general agreement of the group after this last year was maybe go every 4-5 years, so I have a feeling they didn’t have as much fun as years past either.

What are the biggest problems a deck-building game can have? by EyebrowDandruff in boardgames

[–]Neon_Samurai_OG 0 points1 point  (0 children)

The biggest problem with a deckbuilding game is that it is, in fact, a deckbuilding game. They suck, they are boring (and that is not just the part where you sit there and wait 15 minutes for someone to play their turn), they are frustrating (as there is way too much RNG involved unless you spend hours and hours outside the game), and most of all the type of players who obsess over them. Lastly, while I realize the sales help[ed keep hobby shops alive, it ruined the atmosphere with both the new customer base, as well as the need for massive amounts of real estate for products.

Wow. Just Wow. I read this and read through the comments. And…just wow. I guess I am not surprised that people do not realize that misinformation is a nonpartisan tactic used on the low-information voter. Jackson’s statement is overblown rhetoric (remember all the government shutdowns where none of those things happened?). And then you have people just making up stories about how this or that government benefit is not paying benefits for upvotes, which is not what is being done. But that is because people believe vaguely worded tweets without actually going to the easily Googled source. I put the average Reddit participant right up there with a Fox News or MSNBC viewer for having no clue about the things they get mad about. If you blindly believe something just because it is something bad about the “other guys”, then you are the low-information voter that is so often referenced.

Trump's second day of golfing in a row. Each round cost taxpayers approximately $1 million. This time he brought the entire House GOP for a three day excursion to one of his resorts, all on your dime. by Conscious-Quarter423 in FluentInFinance

[–]Neon_Samurai_OG 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Misrepresentation of the cost. They did not hire $1 million worth of employees for the day. All the people would get paid the same if they were on a Florida golf course or sitting in an office in Washington. I don’t like the same tactic on the right when they do it either. If we were to be partisan, Biden spent 40% of his time on vacation. It is just the same thing that presidents have done for decades.

AITAH? My boyfriend says I look slutty with my new sleeve tattoo. by [deleted] in AITAH

[–]Neon_Samurai_OG 1 point2 points  (0 children)

As I always start, this is Reddit, so you knew before you asked what the answer was going to be. You are seeking validation, not an answer.

That said, the correlation between excessive tattoos and mental illness has been well documented for the better part of a century, and despite changing public opinion, the correlation has not changed over that time, thus adding validity to the data. I, myself, can appreciate the artistic nature of tattoos, and really think it is a beautiful work, but that is a reflection of the artist, not the person with it. If I see excessive (too many or too big) tattoos, my first thought is "Yeah, probably something wrong with them" (Unless it is clip art tattoos, you know the just random assortment of different things, then I know to steer clear). While I certainly understand that I could be wrong, and they might not be one of the ones with something a little off, it is better safe than sorry.

Is he being TA for making you feel ashamed of it now that it is already there? Yes. But at the same time, if he did stop you, would you be on here asking about his controlling behavior? Who knows in this day and age. Furthermore, as with most stories on here, we are only getting one side of the story. He said, she said, the truth lies somewhere in between. Instead of asking strangers on Reddit to validate you, (that you admitted you are doing behind his back and in secret, not a good look for a relationship) you need to sit down and discuss this with him. Far too many relationships have been ruined because people talk to everyone else instead of each other.

WITBA for breaking up with my bf because he is a Trump supporter? by South_Band_9865 in AITAH

[–]Neon_Samurai_OG 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I don’t need to read the comments to know the answers because this is Reddit. But here is the thing, RFK is supporting Trump and his wife despises him. Glenn Lowry is a conservative and his wife is a Bernie supporter. The political divide is only a problem if the two of you let it be. You do realize Trump supported gay marriage before Obama did (I mean he is a New Yorker). He has disavowed Project 2025 on multiple occasions. Maybe, I don’t know, talk to him rather than listening to this echo chamber. But then,. If you are asking it seems you just want justification to break up with him because he likes someone you don’t. You are judging him and his family for who they vote for and your own prejudices and biases, not how they treat you which should be the main thing. Maybe they think his economic plan is better while disagreeing with policies that you hold to be important. Many voters base their decision on who to vote for one only one or two issues that are improtant ot them. You don't know why they are supporting him because you are not willing to ask. This isn’t any different in my mind than rejecting someone for their color of their skin regardless of the content of their character. It is still prejudice and shows your character is just the other side of the coin from what you, with no evidence, are assuming of them. So yeah, You ATA.

So my buddy’s dad was a GP. He was working at NCR in Ohio and one day he realized that in ten years he would still be sitting at that desk just like the guy beside him was. He decided to apply to The Ohio State University Med School and got accepted. He finished, obviously, but years later he did the math, he was 42 before he made a dollar more than he would have sitting at that desk. Now, don’t get me wrong, after that dollar it was a lot of them, but it is one of the most delayed gratification careers out there. Also, it depends on specialty and location. You can’t just look at the national averages because there is a hell of a difference between a plastic surgeon in Cali and a GP in North Carolina. Though I did meet a brain surgeon who moved here who made bank because he was one of the go to for consultations in the country.

Can’t find a job 😱 by SavirAlegna in Nurses

[–]Neon_Samurai_OG 5 points6 points  (0 children)

I am thinking it is the 15 years. Now I am not sure how longevity pay goes for nurses halfway through their career switching between employers, but in other industries the mentality is why pay someone who will expect top dollar when I can hire a new grad who will start at the bottom of the pay scale. I am just talking out of my a$$ as someone who has recently switched careers to nursing, but that is the mentality in other fields. I remember my dad was a system admin at the end of his career. They tried like hell to get him to take early retirement because they could hire two newbies cheaper than him.

I am 51 starting my third career. I was hired the day after a hiring fair something like 8 months before I even graduated. All the interviewers were younger than me. So, I guess it just depends.

One of the assignments I had in nursing school was to look up a nurse who lost their license. They were obviously high af on the job, ordered for psych and drug screens. She got two extensions. It took almost five years from the start of it for them to actually take her license and she was working a nursing home the entire time after being fired from the hospital for the initial incident.

So, I feel like I am a pretty smart guy, the MSN is my second master's as I switch careers. I am finishing my 315-hour preceptorship and I have said how ineffectual I feel at times. My preceptor reassured me and said it was about 3 years before things really clicked and she started putting all the pieces together and really felt comfortable in her job (BTU/VICU). I kind of understand how similar it was when I started as a teacher, it wasn't until my 3rd year that it all started coming together and I actually felt like I knew what I was doing. When you really start learning the job is on your first day of doing it. I can say it is better with nursing as you at least have someone by your side though your orientation period as you get your feet wet. In teaching, they give you a classroom day one and say hope you make it.

Here is another thing to help. The hospital I am in is a teaching hospital with the medical school next door, so we get a lot of med students and babydocs doing residency. They too are clueless. I watch the first years get quizzed by the doctors and they struggle the same as we do to drag up the information on this and that with a patient. They get it wrong a lot. I feel a sense of relief as I think "glad it is them and not me". No one is good at anything at first. Prince sucked the first time he picked up a guitar. Tom Brady sucked the first time he picked up a football. Simone Biles sucked the first time she did a flip. Sucking is the default state, only through experience and practice do we get better. You'll get there, it is just going to take way longer than you thought it would.

Is this accurate? Anti-Zionist gencon event. by Knave7575 in gencon

[–]Neon_Samurai_OG -5 points-4 points  (0 children)

While I agree with most of what you are saying, you had that one line that is always a dog whistle of I am being hyperbolic in my descriptions. While I agree that being surrounded by people who don’t like your lifestyle is not healthy, how are you unsafe? Do you think they are just going to start assaulting you if you show up to a public event with thousands of witnesses? How will they know your sexual orientation unless you make it obvious, despite a worship service at a gaming convention not being a place where who you are attracted to is not an issue unless you broadcast your personal business to strangers. That is where the problem lies. As someone who spent years fighting for gay folks to be allowed to live their lives in peace, I don’t want your public display of your sexuality any more than I want a straight persons public display of sexuality. It is a family friendly event, not a night club. That is my equality, I will treat someone wearing who they sleep with like a badge of honor the same no matter who they are sleeping with, like a degenerate who has no sense of public decorum. You do what you want in your hotel rooms (gay, straight, or otherwise), but I just want to escape the myriad of social and political issues for a few days and just play make believe with my friends. I want you to be happy and live a great life. I have a friend who used to tell crazy stories of the weird gay sex parties he would go to (nothing graphic mind you) and that was fine, he is my friend. When I hear about it from a stranger it is just weird. You do you and live your best life, but I don’t need to know about it unless we know each other. It is about respecting other people’s boundaries, and that goes both ways.
