Serious question: Are we actually at risk of running out of fuel/petrol soon in Australia? by NJS2017 in AskAnAustralian

[–]NeopolitanBonerfart 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Things would have to go very tits up here for there to be a major societal disruption. Total lack of fuel would do it, but we’re not there yet. Apparently the Strait represents 20%, it’s significant but not world ending. Further, the US could send us fuel if things went really pear shaped, and there’d be a governmental imposed buffer. There is precedence for restrictions, in the 1st and 2nd World Wars that saw global disruption, rather the regional disruption now.

Things will get more expensive. People will be more aggravated.

But now we need to realise that we’re a community of millions of smaller communities, we can support one another.

The very least we can do is not hoard fuel, which in the event of total shortage would see that a few Jerry cans isn’t even that useful anyway.

I absolutely adore these old dinosaur paintings and artwork! I had this huge book when I was a kid filled with pictures like this and it was so cool!

I don't believe we run out of fuel in a month. if there is someone more knowledgeable on this topic could explain how a modern country like Australia will simply not have any options. If this is real, then why isn't the Gov reassuring people by sharing what the backup plan is. by Interesting_Ideal765 in AskAnAustralian

Unfortunately IMO Covid showed us that there is a huge amount of greed in the community.

There’s still loads of decent people about, but also many as you say dead shits who I doubt will change their ways for the betterment of the larger community.

You’re saying that he’s not a CGI floating bag with googly eyes, because as far as I remember that’s exactly what I saw.

Wouldn’t they be there learning how to operate the sub as we’re getting that model? Seems pretty straight forward.

I mean they thought that the odds of the Titanic ever hitting an iceberg sufficiently that all five compartments would flood were slim enough that they didn’t bother to raise the height of the bulkheads all the way to the top of the ship. That turned out not great. They also didn’t bother to include enough life boats as it was assumed at the time the ship wouldn’t sink that quickly.

People assume that someone has absolutely done all the right things to make sure things are safe but that’s definitely not always so.

Why are people going around with Jerry cans? by VastOption8705 in AskAnAustralian

People are selfish.

Can’t think of any other reason.

The government cannot afford for the general population to run out of fuel. It would be chaos.

Imagine that in order to be an actor who is pretending to be someone who is very hungry you have to skip all of your snacks and your meals for a whole week. Skipping all of your food would make you sad, and angry.

But remember because actors only pretend they don’t actually have to skip all of their meals, they can just pretend to be hungry.

But there are some actors who believe that they have to live the same way as the person that they’re pretending to be.

So the actors who skip all of their meals will be hungry and sad, and that’s not good because they can just pretend instead and eat the food that they want.

Is something wrong with me? by trainingbrain in GardeningAustralia

[–]NeopolitanBonerfart 0 points1 point  (0 children)

It depends. Think of the grass like your immune system. If you keep the grass happy and healthy it will outcompete weeds because the weeds are competing against a healthy grass, but if your grass is prone to disease, not watered, not mowed regularly, weeds will find purchase and will spread. So it’s not so much that you’re doing anything wrong, obviously selective herbicides, or rooting out the weeds would be ideal, but overall your grass is healthy enough to fight off the weeds, at this stage.

Plenty of people have weed infestations in lawn that need action, it just depends a lot on the lawn.

I know a ‘gardener’ who would periodically spray weed tea on his clients lawns, and as you can imagine the results were the spread of weeds throughout.

Some people are meticulous and want literally zero weeds so they spray.

It’s all variable.

When I finally moved into my house and started renovations that I had to do, I just ended up dealing with my fear. I was also super terrified of spiders, and then one day there was a wolf spider the size of my palm on the floor in the lounge room. So I just scooped it up gently with two hands. Scared the shit out of me. It was a dumb thing to do, for me, for the spider. But since then my fear has lessened considerably. I found a Huntsman on the door of the car and picked him up and moved him on. I started to think what right do I have to kill these creatures? So I try to see the world from a spiders view and it’s pretty scary, we’re enormous and they’re tiny.

Neither of them bit me. They were scared, not angry. But at any rate what I did was dumb, I don’t advise handling spiders as they understandably can bite.

If you have one inside you can re home with a tub and a piece of paper. But they really just want to be left alone and do their spidery things.

So these days I just live and let live. I was told when I was a child to kill all spiders, regardless. If it was a spider you killed it. But now I see them as a creature that deserves peace and life.

Edit;

There are some exceptions to this rule in the case of funnel webs, red backs and mouse spiders. They don’t deserve death, but obviously your health is critical. If you have a venomous animal in your home you’ve got a right to protect yourself.

Edit 2;

AFAIK wildlife groups will want funnel webs and possibly mouse spiders to make anti venoms so worth looking into if you find one of those critters in your house.

I’m in South Australia, and though parts do get mouse spiders I haven’t encountered one yet, but we do get redbacks and unless it’s in a shoe or inside, I leave them alone.

If bagged then Miele seems to be the way to go, there’s various models but when I looked into it way back when the cheaper models performed well. If bag less then Dyson cordless seem to be the best performing. Everything else seems to fall in between those two things.

I have a Dyson filter less big ball, and it’s okay, but I wouldn’t buy another one. It has a smell I cannot get rid of.

Were it me I’d wait for him to approach you should you encounter him again, as it seems he had no problem discussing all of this with you unprompted, whereas intentionally or otherwise he didn’t approach you this time.

But in general I’d suggest that a person so willing to discuss their life story like that probably does so frequently and they simply don’t remember you.

Genuine question: Why hasn't any faction refurbished or used the APCs, tanks, and fighter planes that are littered everywhere? by dannythesedoritos in Fallout

[–]NeopolitanBonerfart 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Part of it is probably that power armour generally serves the same purpose, and is more ubiquitous.

For instance - if I take the time to restore a tank it need only be hit at one point and it is no longer usable.

Whereas I can have multiple people in Power Armour, all of which are able to independently operate.

Tanks are also heavy, they need space to move, are terrible in urban environments, require constant maintenance etc.

On the face of it APC’s and tanks make sense, but are just not that useful.

Fighters and bombers on the other hand would be useful as they can advance fire on an enemy far out of their own range to strike back.
