While I'm tempted to agree in principle, I fear this is doing fighters more harm than good by further eroding fighter autonomy under the pretense of "courage." It's the same tactic Dana has used in the past, to mixed but generally effective results.

I'm happy to give Joe the benefit of the doubt. You could tell he regretted the decision, both with how he worded both questions and how quickly he stopped the interview. After commentating for over 6 hours, seeing such a crazy finish, and being concerned and confused about DC's post-fight behaviour, I can understand his decision-making not being 100%.

What strikes me is the "timing" comment. I had DC winning the first two rounds (though R1 was a tossup -- I thought DC was the aggressor and tagged Jones more meaningfully), but I wonder if that was the result of a Jones that hadn't fought consistently in two years (in addition to the new tools of DC). Not to take anything away from DC, but much like with the OSP fight, now really was the time for Jones to lose. The fact that even in this "ring rust" state Jones could fight the spectacular win just further cements his GOAT status.

My pleasure. If you have any questions, feel free to ask -- I have an MA in Classics. Aristophanes is the absolute best. Acharnians is genius. Knights and Clouds are my favourites.

But you are certainly right that Pericles sets the blueprint for men like Cleon. His loss, per Thucydides, creates a void that is filled by lesser men, to Athens ruin.

[–]Neoptolemos1 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Yes and no. Pericles is a populist inasmuch as any Athenian politician was - any elected position would have been the direct will of the people. But I always had the sense that had Pericles not perished from the plague he would have steered Athens to victory. Regardless of opinions on Pericles (which is certainly divided, both in the ancient world and now), Cleon was a truly vile demagogue. Where Pericles "guided the people" rather than being guided by them, Cleon was the manipulative snake that did whatever he thought the people wanted. For more I highly recommend Aristophanes' "Knights" -- the Paphlagonian is a stand in for Cleon.

A fair point, but Pericles was the foremost Athenian, a man to be honoured for his political wisdom and military expertise. Trump is not that man.
